Structure Fire in McKinleyville

Firefighters are at the scene of a residential structure fire in the 800 block of Bird Avenue in McKinleyville. The call went out over the scanner just before 11:30 a.m.
The first firefighters to arrive at the scene said they could see “heavy black smoke” from Highway 101 and estimated that the structure was 50% involved. At this point, it is unclear if there are occupants inside the house.
We will update this post when we find out more information.
Update 12:15 p.m.: Additional fire engines have been requested to the scene, and firefighters have switched to a defensive attack for the fire. According to apxdata.com, “In the firefighting industry, defensive attack refers to a strategy used when a fire is too large or dangerous to be fought with an offensive attack. It involves firefighters working from the exterior of a building, using hose lines and other equipment to protect exposures and prevent the fire from spreading.”
Update 1 p.m.: Video provided by Alan McCann-Sayles.

I was just there hosing down a shed on the neighbor’s property. Unfortunately the house is a total loss.Hopefully no people or pets were lost.It seems very tragic.
Eric, thank you so much for being involved and hosing down the shed on the neighbor’s property. I am so very sorry for the owners losing their home to the fire. I pray that if anyone or their pets were inside, they got out safely. It is folks like you that are willing to lend a hand in an emergency that truly makes our lives so much better.
