[UPDATE 7:22 p.m.: Forward Progress Stopped] Fire Discovered Near Pecwan This Afternoon

A new wildfire, the Pecwan as it is being called, was discovered this afternoon at approximately 2:08. It is burning in the mountains near Mettah west of the Klamath River in northern Humboldt County.

A full wildland response was requested.

Tanker 96, Chopper 909, and Air Attack 120 are all on the fire as of 2:50 p.m.

Please remember that witnesses and official sources sometimes give incorrect information about unfolding incidents such as this fire. We’ll do our best to provide accurate information and, in the event we discover that there is better information, we’ll update here. 

UPDATE 6:49 p.m.: According to Cal Fire Division Chief Paul Savona, “At 2:13 p.m. the Cal Fire HUU received a report of a vegetation fire near the community of Pecwan. Cal Fire immediately dispatched a response including aircraft, fire engines, bulldozers, and handcrews.”

He told us, “Crews arrived at scene and found approximately one acre of vegetation burning near the community. Crews were able to hold the fire at 14 acres.”

Savona explained that he doesn’t anticipate additional fire growth. “Fire crews will remain in the area and the next couple days for mop up,” he said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

I just hope the firefighters will get this new wildfire out before it has a chance to explode into a full-blown wildfire. I pray that no firefighters or other first responders will be hurt or killed. It is damn hot and very dangerous work!
