3.9 Earthquake This Morning After 4.0 Yesterday

USGS map of yesterday and today's map

USGS map of yesterday’s (left) and today’s quake (right).

Less than 24 hours apart two earthquakes rumbled west of Ferndale. Today, a 3.98 quake shook a few residents in the Ferndale to Wilder Ridge area. While yesterday a 4.0 centered offshore on the Mendocino fault west of Cape Mendocino.

If one were a superstitious type, one might note the holiday connection to our recent larger quakes.

The 6.4 quake just before Christmas this last year.

The 5.4 quake on New Year’s Day

And now today’s 4th of July quake.

Of course, we skipped any number of other holidays including Valentine’s Day and Easter with no large rumblings so we’ll have to jettison that theory.

Still, may the Fourth bring you more family and fun and less rumblings and shakings.

The 8 a.m. Fourth of July looks to be centered right at Cape Mendocino, heart of the Triple Junction. It was a brief but quite sharp jolt in the Lower Mattole area.

Barley felt it. My dog felt it and hid behind mama’s chair. She remembers the big one a couple months ago and has taken to sleeping under the bed.

The USGS site is only showing the 3.8 quake this morning no 4.0 from yesterday, weird.

Just saw a news story on KTVU SF about a couple whose house was ruined in the 6.4 quake. No home, but the mortgage bank has its hand out for the monthly payments. Insurance? I don’t know.
