Broken mirror frame at our house but the glass is still intact.
OMG KYM. Glad to.hear you are okay . Always reliable.
Thanks for your work!
We live in the Rohnerville area of Fortuna and our house is trashed. Broken water pipes seems the be the worst. It’s a mess
I’m so sorry!
I use to live on Main Street in Rohnervrille. Down from a little store..wish I could see it again..we had light yellow aluminum siding put on it..we left in 1968..is it lots different now? I pray you all are safe! Sandi
Any word on the structure in rio dell with possible entrapment??
There is so much on the scanner that it’s hard to pin down BUT I think no one was injured. Unsure on the extent of damage.
Are there any gas stations open? Eureka and North.
Saw a picture of the Renner station at Fernbridge. Their lights were on.
I would try the ones that were operational during the psps like the casinos.
I think most are open. But I don’t know that for sure.
Blue lake Rancheria play station777
Thank you everyone!
Kym, there must be a mistake with the latest update at 8:50, it says the roads appear to be in good shape in the Garberville area???? That can’t be right, can it? ?
Well, as good as they were prior to the quake…
Haha
Probably are fine with the possible exception of one or 2 places in the hills no one’s heard of yet. I live in downtown Redway and it just felt like a 5 – 5.3 quake here. Only knew it wasn’t because it just kept going.
Fortuna and Ferndale probably got a lot more damage because of their soils. Probably felt like Jelly up there.
Having been through the Loma Prieta @ 2 miles from the epicenter, and all it’s hundreds of aftershocks I have a fair idea of intensities.
We have a large broken mirror but the near antique frame is still intact. Wanna trade? Or combine the two? Fortunately it wasn’t our “fault”, so, phew, next seven years still lookin’ lucky.
Snort! Size might be a bit different…
It’s been upgraded to a 6.4
6.4 15 miles off Fortuna. Redway power is down and 1 snowman died in our home. RIP
No power in garberville currently
Just my nerves rattled up in Hawkins Bar..no power too.
Felt like a 10.0
Earthquake tracker is now saying 6.4 . One of the strongest quakes ive felt and it went on for a long time. It shook and rolled
My earthquake phone detector went off then I felt soom shaking here on round valley not to strong but it was felt felt like a 2.2 here
Mine went off right in the middle of it as stuff fell off the counter and was voicing “there is an earthquake” in a monotone voice. It was so annoying.
I was awake when the first shake happened. It shook pretty good in Benbow, no damage. Did not feel the second quake. Our power went off shortly after.
The dog hit the doggy door like all get-out. I told him that he was supossed to drop and cover. I guess dog rules are different.
I hope that everyone is okay
Same with my dog in Fortuna…and she refuses to come back in..
My dog blamed it all on the jumping christmas tree, and barked at it for about 5 solid minutes then came and cried on my bed like a baby. We lost a few ornaments but no damage. We felt it really good here in Miranda. Biggest one ive ever felt.
First place I looked right after USGS. You guys rock! Here near Weaverville it started out as a sharp shake and transitioned to a more gentle roll. I got a warning on my phone about 10 seconds before it started, that was actually helpful. I didn’t actually take cover or anything, grew up in so cal, seemed like this was a weekly thing when I was a kid. First real earthquake I’ve felt in decades. Hope everything is ok over there and no major damage has occurred.
Also, none of our dogs even lifted their heads, I guess it’s just too warm and cozy to worry about a little shaking.
A series of four small (approx M2) aftershocks moving in sequence toward hwy 36
Jeez, now a cluster of M3’s in Ferndale
Holy Moly that was a big one!! Definitely heard some things fall on my crystal shelf, but we are safe! I will have to check for actual damage in the daylight as we unfortunately just lost power. Everyone please be safe, check on your loved ones in the mountains and otherwise please! Wow USGS is saying 6.4 and it absolutely felt like that, my farm dog sensed it right before it hit, she started crying all crazy which is abnormal and I was worried so I went to check on her in her bed and then BOOM. Was literally holding on to the doorway to stand up during it. Definitely felt like I was riding the earth beneath my feet. So powerful.
Broke half a dozen things at my house in Eureka. Lots of stuff on the floor. Grocery stores are going to be a mess. I’ll be surprised if It stays a 6.4, I predicted 6.8 when it happened. 3rd strongest earthquake I’ve ever felt! Remember to sniff around for the smell of gas folks!
Wow.
Eastern Humboldt/Western Trinity, rollin’ pretty good.
I’m impressed with the earthquake warning system.
My phone went off with the alert.
As soon as I read it, I started to feel it.
A unique feeling.
Is it going to get stronger?
Then it gets stronger.
Praying everyone is alright.
Must’ve been pretty scary on the coast.
Tsumani?
Same here in Willow Creek
Knocked the power out in Hawkins Bar. Made the chimes ring and knocked things off the shelves. No damage to the that we can see. Have to wait for daylight.
Seemed bigger than the 1992 quakes, by my memory. I was guessing it was bigger than 6.4, in the hills just east of arcata.
Me too.
6.4. 6.6. That’s about as big as they get in Humboldt
One of the 92 quakes was 7.2. Frankly as widespread as this was I can’t think it won’t be upgraded.
Not even close. Google “cascadia subduction event”.
I been through a 7.0 and a 7.2 here in Fortuna.
It looks like the epicenter of this quake was much closer to the coast and population centers than the 1992 quakes so that may account for the fact that this one hit worse than the 1992 quakes. Apparently there are a lot of factors that play into the impact of an earthquake, including its location — how close, how deep underground, how long, the geology and hydrology of specific areas, and of course, what’s above ground to be damaged. So the Richter ratings don’t tell us everything about what the impact will be.
It was just closer to shore.
Big here in Trinidad! The whole house seemed to move 5 feet in all directions. Paintings fell off the wall. Cats ran for cove! Powers out! Wow!
Other earthquakes have happened on 12/20 January in the past
My phone screamed and then It felt like I was in a rocking chair here in Anderson, CA, my whole house shook and crackled..
I live in Myrtle Town and our house shook pretty violently for at least 15 seconds or so. Looks like the power is out across the whole neighborhood. 2nd largest earthquake I felt in Humboldt in 25 years.
That was a loooong shaker here in So Hum. Very interesting to see how USGS shows the aftershocks moving around the area – Ferndale, Rio Dell, Hydesville, Willow Creek…..
In Willits we had a stirring motion for at least 15sec with a 10 sec warning from Google to prepare for shaking. My have we come a long way from Loma Prietta and the Ferndale earthquake days with technology to warn and prepare us.
Kneeland here. One big jolt that went on for about15(?) to 20 seconds but have felt no after shocks. Lots of stuff down. All the kitchen drawers facing north came open. Checked for propane smell but nothing. Hate to shut it off because such a PITA to relight. Of course, like everyone else, no power. Hope everyone else is ok too.
Been here all my 40 some years and that was a rocker!! Kinda reminded me of the night “aftershocks” after the ‘92 quake. Stuff all over the floor and some broken here in west eureka
My first thought was…didn’t this happen last year?
https://kymkemp.com/2021/12/20/long-strong-earthquake-smacks-north-coast/
Yes, yes it did.
Thankful I was bah humbugging it this year…had to glue many nutcrackers back together last year….Didn’t put them out this year
Phone alert (In Lakeport Ca ) went off but I felt absolutely nothing. I’m awake now nevertheless! Saying a prayer for all y’all. I definitely got the alert but couldn’t figure out why until I checked RHBB
Yeah, lost our wedding champagne glasses…after 22 years of earthquakes ?
Schools closed in Klamath/Trinity.
“NO TSUMNAMI IS EXPECTED At approximately 2:37 am.” Good to hear.
Thank you Blue Lake for having Search and Rescue coming around.
The interior of my house is trashed on Tompkins Hill Rd…
Sending you a hug! Hang in there. Let us know if there is a way we can help.
Thank you Kym. Nothing compared to 1992…
I live in a geodesic dome between Arcata and Blue Lake. The house usually has little movement except hopping up and down but this time it rolled kinda side to side and creaked like my joints. The dog embedded herself in my armpit and wouldn’t get out of bed. Power is out but my generator is up so I can have extra- early morning coffee.
Everybody stay safe and pray no one was injured.
Felt in central Trinity at 4k elevation.
Straight woke me up in bed with enough time to shake around and realize what it was.
I live on 299 just over Lord Ellis summit and my little house shook like crazy. I was just getting ready to go to bed when my house started rocking back and forth. Right about then my phone started going off. A shelf with alot of glass pretties shook like crazy. So glad it didn’t tip over or I would have been hurt bad. Lots of stuff on my floors and crack in the ceiling and walls. But thank goodness we are all ok.
36 is open between Alton and Alderpoint Road. AP Road clear between Blocksburg and Bridgeville
Thank you! We really appreciate folks chiming in with what they know. It can be very helpful to local residents.
thanks kim you were on the info so quick! one of the reasons we love ya!
My bed shaking woke me up in Redding, likely from the 3.9 in Willow Creek… thanks of the coverage, very much appreciated!
Dishes and most of our glassware broken
Supposed to have a houseful of guests on Friday. Better start fixing my now-broken water heater. Walnut x Ridgewood. Just had a little shaker. Damn.
Mild shaking woke me way up here in Williams Oregon. Blessings to all of you near the epicenter..
Oh man! is that the one on Pacific Avenue?
Got photos now. It’s Wildwood and Dixie.
Never felt a shake like tonight before. In Fortuna Felt bigger than 6.4. Incredibly noisy. Broken glass everywhere. Two of three beehives knocked over. Not fun suiting up in the dark trying to restack them, they were mad. Wondering what all I’m going to find come daylight. My cat is still under the bed! Hoping everyone is ok
Hugs! I hope the bees are snug back in their hives and you are relatively unstung.
Mexico City had their largest (7+) earthquakes all on the same day in 1985, 2017 and this year. 1985 was over 8 in magnitude. The odds are astounding. I think I’ll jot todays date down just in case:)
Love when we think we know it all and get a literal shake up.
We made national news
https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/20/us/humboldt-county-california-earthquake/index.html
Top floor apt in Fields Landing. Apt is seriously F’d up. A lot of broken stuff.
Still cleaning. No power Fields Landing until 10pm
I am so sorry!
Ron felt Aftershock In Fortuna at 7:09 am
I’m on Fickle Hill with a view from 900 feet of the the Arcata ponds to the towers on Kneeland. I haven’t been able to check my water yet but I think I only lost a couple of ornaments. I only felt the big one; none of the after shocks. I did get a light show of earthquake lights though and transformers bursting on the Samoa Penninsula. I probably also saw where the epicenter was and light being generated there. I have a golden retriever who got up but is not excitable. Probably just wanted a snack.
Arcata schools are closed (& Im guessing surrounding districts are too but the website isn’t loading so I can’t verify)
Peninsula Union school in Samoa is also closed today
We felt a pretty good shake in hayfork, definitely the biggest I have felt here.
