Press release from the Humboldt County Prescribed Burn Association:

Today (Friday 6/30) there is the first of four prescribed fires scheduled in SoHum, beginning this morning on the Chapman Ranch in the Miranda/Salmon Creek area. Some smoke may be visible from Hwy 101 and around Southern Humboldt in the morning about 8am or so. This is a 11 acre grassland burn that is expected to be completed fairly quickly and will be implemented with both HCPBA volunteers and certified fire service members with firefighting equipment.

Additionally, there are prescribed burns planned for Sat, Sun and Mon.

Friday (6/30) 11 acres in Chapman Ranch, Salmon Creek
Saturday (7/1) 20 acres for Perry Meadow on the east side of Elk Ridge in the Briceland area.
Sunday (7/2) 5 acres on the Phelps Ranch, on the west side of Elk Ridge.
Monday (7/3) another 11 acres on the Chapman Ranch, Salmon Creek.

Invasive Medusahead grass has cured rapidly in the last week and now is the time to burn the seeds to prevent further spread.

When planning prescribed burns, do they use software to simulate the likely spread of the fire in that specific terrain in those specific weather conditions?

There are several software packages available that do this.

Yes, it’s well planned out and if conditions change on the ground they stop early

Good, medusa head grass is a major invasive bummer, and creates a super fire hazard tinder. Local ca native grass and forbes stay green late in the season.

Probably would be a better idea to do this later in the fall closer to rainy season in case it did get out of control it is not as long until rains could come and help. There is just to much money to be made from Fire season to not have Wild Fires. There are alot of people that depend on the fires.

A lot of subject matter experts commenting in here. You should all pursue careers in fire behavior modeling and predictions since you are such naturals at it.
