Humboldt County Office of Education (HCOE) Superintendent Michael Davies-Hughes visited Taiwan from June 1 – 9, 2023, as part of a six-person US education delegation invited by the Taiwanese Ministry of Education (MOE). The MOE and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in San Francisco have hosted a series of visits by senior education officials in different states. Other delegates on this trip were from Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and Oklahoma.

Davies-Hughes engaged in a number of meetings with education leaders from Taiwan and participated in an international forum where he presented on the current status and characteristics of TK-12 education in California, with an emphasis on Humboldt County. The purpose of the visit to Taiwan was to deepen mutual understanding and explore further possibilities for international educational exchange and cooperation. In addition to meeting with education officials, the cultural visit also included visits to the renowned National Palace Museum, which houses a vast collection of artifacts; the Ping-Lin Tea Museum, which showcases Taiwan’s unique tea culture; the iconic landmarks of Taipei 101 and Liberty Square; and the vibrant streets of Dadaocheng and Ning-Xia Night Market, which represent Taiwan’s local spirit. These diverse experiences allowed guests to immerse themselves in Taiwan’s beauty in a short time.

Upon his return to the USA, Davies-Hughes stated, “This was an unforgettable experience. The country of Taiwan is fascinating; it’s a beautifully diverse country. The Taiwanese people I met were very gracious and welcoming. I am looking forward to helping advance the opportunities of educational exchanges and experiences for students and school staff from Taiwan and Humboldt County!” Davies-Hughes added, “My favorite part of the trip was visiting Du-Xing Elementary School in Taichung City. We were treated to student dance performances, art exhibitions, and we even had the chance to try calligraphy lessons in Mandarin!”

HCOE wasting more taxpayer dollars sending the County Superintendent to Taiwan. Sounds like one big BS session after another. The wasted money could have been used to buy books, paper, pencils, etc., for the students, especially the ones from low-income families that are struggling to make ends meet in our county.

They have money for sending administrators on junkets and money to hire multiple Superintendents and support staff at $100,000+ and 50 million dollar bonds we have to pay for to build a gymnasium yet teachers languish on the pay scale. And back pockets full of wimpy Board of Education members who patronize the heavyweight top of the education systems, but don’t seem to care much about the students. And they all have the gall to criticize Charter Schools for taking “their” students. The real reason: they need student attendance money to pay for salaried administrators and staff. It’s time to elect Board of Education members with a focus on students and teachers and not junkets with no bottom-line.!!

Sadly, those that educate our children have been under paid for decades.

I’m sure the difference in education between Taiwan and Humboldt is like night and day. Not in a good way. Intense pressure to do well in school and very high standards. Test comparisons between the two? If that is even possible.

I don’t see the benefits of California’s county offices of education, especially when weighed against their huge budgets.

This is more CIA propaganda to make taiwan appear like a country.
It’s a fucking breakaway island full of fascist fucking Losers who lost the Chinese Revolution.
Never would be there Except for billions of USA taxdollars supporting it for ever!
Plus USA has been threatening China with nuclear war to protect these fascist losers who took over taiwan with CIA help after they were thrown out of government at all levels.
China would Not have “needed” a fycking nuke without all the direct specific nuclear threats by USA
Way to go USA proliferating nuke threats worldwide
Tiawan. IS A PART OF CHINA
Stop beleiving these propaganda trips are good for anything except Starting another War.

I hope he gets to eat a school lunch while he’s there.
What passes for food at schools here is disgusting.

Why do we allow this and how did the monster Humboldt County Education money wasting corporation grow into this mess? How many fat cat employees are feasting on our taxpayer’s teats? This isn’t education for our children it is a group of silent mafia like assembly of beaucreats who are feeding off every worker’s paying taxes. The big question is how can we break up this financial monetary pig sty. Smacks of typical Humboldt County “Good Old Boy” Public Government. No one has come up with any plan or action group to change the system. We, parents, HAVE to educate our young people that it will be them who will need to demand change. They can start with attacking the avenue of funding which is student attendance based funding. Second, support honest Charter Schools. Better 25 Charter schools than one huge bureaucratic educational organization. Last, a group of like minded parents we can elect to the Board of Education to demand accountability. It’s up to US!!
