‘A Fairly Horrific Scene’: Three Pit Bulls Attack Two Fort Bragg Women Causing Severe Injury

Two Fort Bragg women suffered major injuries after three pit bulls attacked them while caring for the K9s at their owner’s home. One of the women had to be flown to an out-of-area hospital for treatment.

One of the dogs has been euthanized, another is in quarantine, and another was evaluated for medical treatment after two of the attacking dogs ganged up on one of their own.

Fort Bragg Police Chief Neil Cervenka provided us with an overview of the incident. He described the attack as a “fairly horrific scene” adding that “those dogs would’ve killed them if they hadn’t escaped.”

Officers arrived on the 400 block of South Harrison Street around 11:33 a.m. and found an adult woman standing in the home’s driveway with “deep lacerations to her left forearm and a dog bite wound to the face.” After immediately applying a pressure dressing to the woman’s forearm, the officer learned there was another woman at the rear of the home with the attacking dogs.

As medics took over care of the first victim, Chief Cervenka said the first officer on scene made his way to the backyard locating a “second adult female victim sitting on top of a hot tub with a large amount of blood covering her clothing.”

The officer noted a door to the residence was open and saw that inside two pit bulls had begun attacking a third. The officer learned that there were no occupants in the home and closed the door to the residence trapping the dogs inside.

The second victim lost “a large amount of blood from major injuries to both hands and arms” and advised the officer she also suffered leg injuries. A second ambulance was requested to the scene. Two Fort Bragg Police officers and a Community Service Officer provided care to slow the bleeding.

Ultimately, both victims were transported to Adventist Health Mendocino Coast Hospital and the second victim’s injuries proved so severe she was flown out of the area for treatment.

An off-duty FBPD officer assisted in detaining the dogs. A large white/black male pit bull described as the “most aggressive” was transported to Ukiah to be euthanized. A tan/white female pit bull that had joined the male in attacking the third was taken to the Ukiah Animal Shelter for quarantine. The second female pit bull that was attacked by the other two was taken to the Mendocino Coast Humane Society for evaluation by a veterinarian.

Chief Cervenka told us that the two victims were visiting the house at the time and were reportedly familiar with the three animals. The owner had left the two women with the dogs on other occasions without incident and could not provide a reason why the dogs attacked this time. Ultimately, the owner signed surrender papers for all of the dogs.

We have reached out to Mendocino County Animal Control to get an update regarding the three dogs and will provide more information when available.

Three or more dogs make a pack when this happens they become dominant fighting to be the lead dog if humans are there the dogs also take that as a threat and will try to over come any one in the pack

This might be true but this dynamic only seems to be an issue when the dogs are Pit Bulls.

Wait what?
One Pitbull is getting medical care, the other is in quarantine and only one will be euthanized?
The article’s title says three pittbulls attacked the women.

So many want to be mad at the dogs, and yes they have proven themselves dangerous to the community and need to be dealt with accordingly. BUT, I want to see the owners held accountable. I’ve seen small dogs be more vicious than large dogs they just aren’t capable of the same damage…. The owners of the “pets” are who I’d like to see drug through some stuff!

What was the outcome of the woman who was attacked in Myers Flat last year? Did she lose her legs below the knee? Did the dogs get put to death?

I think about that woman from time to time. She had three kids and did lose a leg. I wonder if she stayed in the area and if the rehab has helped. Also I wonder if her neighbor got more dogs…

Pit bulls are the most wonderful, loving pets,. Until of course they suddenly arent so wonderful. The elephant in the room is that these dogs have been carefully bred and selected for many years to have the physique and psychology to be as aggressive and do as much damage as possible to another animal. Usually the victim is another pet ,or farm animal. Occasionally — as in this case — its a human.

These dogs are psychopaths and the apologies and excuses of their enthusiasts are not going to change this. There is no reason for these dogs to even exist and the breed should be extirpated.

The humans that bred this breed to fight were sickos too, and the residue of their vile mindset continues to damage innocent lives.

I think humans should be wiped out cuz they kill every day humans kill anything they come across!!! I guarantee you’ve killed before so don’t blame a species because another species trains them to kill very few pitbulls attack and kill chihuahuas by 10 times as many people so do German Shepherds why do you think the police use them because they are a vicious animal insurance won’t cover him just like they won’t cover pitbulls so hey let’s kill all German Shepherds too while we’re at it and Chows and boxers and Golden shepherds they all have attacked and killed learn your facts don’t be willing to kill a breed because of human error

It mostly depends on how the dogs are brought up and raised. Unfortunately many are trained to be dangerous. Don’t blame the whole breed. Like saying whites should be exterminated because of what they’ve done to other breeds.

Its a lot more than 'how they were brought up and raised'. These dogs have been carefully selected through breeding to be the canine equivalent of psychopaths. I.e. they dont have normal pack and social responses to other animals.
Genetics is a huge part of behavior. Some races of humans have evolved –.i.e. natural selection — for physical stamina and disease resistance. Others for intelligence, social cooperation and technological ability. The practical example of this is some are superb boxers and long distance runners. Others are physicists, engineers and mathematicians.

No… they’re not. Pits were bred as fighting dogs, genetically that’s what they do. Gameness was highly prized in them. They no longer fight them, at least not legally, so what do you think they’re going to do when their “job” has been taken from them? Look at all the wonderfully raised ones that have gone in to kill their owners. Some pets!

People who think like you are the reason these dogs have a bad name. I have had pitbulls all my life and none of them have ever hurt anyone. Yes I will admit there are bad dogs out there but they’re a bad dogs of every breed. There does tend to be more bad pitbulls out there than other breeds but there are more pitbulls out there in general than other breeds.

My three pitbulls that I have right now are three of the best dogs I’ve ever even seen in my entire life. People who think the way you do are the problem not the pit bulls. Fun fact pitbulls used to be used to watch children while their parents were working and also known as the “nanny dog”.

I can already tell that you’re probably not going to read this message by the way you talked above and I’m wasting my time but I had to say something because that kind of idiotic thinking is what gives these wonderful dogs such a bad name.

I wish these two ladies a speedy recovery and I hope the dogs get rehomed and get the training they need if they’re not sentenced to death for what happened.

The Nanny Dog is a myth but so are many other negative stereotypes about the dog. Here’s a good piece worth reading for folks who love or hate the breed: https://www.thecut.com/2017/03/how-both-sides-of-the-pit-bull-debate-get-it-wrong.html

Here is the issue human or dog. These days nobody knows when the script is going to be flipped. Look at the horrible crimes that humans have been doing to each other lately. Then add the dogs that were raised by these horrible humans how can you expect anything less. People that defend their “sensitive” dogs because they’re “misunderstood” or somebody didn’t know them so I took them because everything scares them. Quick to bite and or attack/kill frequently. Cat killing dogs. Chicken killing. Goat killing. Rehomed to a place with no animals but KIDS are there. There’s a lot of people that hide these kinds of dogs for years until something like this happens. And “emotional” support dog should not need to be “emotionally” supported by a human.

Golden Retrievers are far better at being emotional support dogs. And they typically don’t eat your friends and neighbors. Even Weimaraners, if you want a short-hair breed.

People get pit bulls, dobermans, rottweilers, mastiffs, and similar breeds because they want a dog that can cause damage. Even if that desire is subliminal.

We’re all sinners who need a Savior, so don’t think I’m saying I’m better than anyone else. I gave up my firearms to avoid being in a position where I could hurt others. Chemo makes a fellow a bit cranky… 😉

We all need to know our limits. And those of our family and pets.

The owners of these animals are at huge liability. No homeowner insurance company will write policies if you own pit bulls and several other types of dogs. If you don’t tell your insurance company about your ownership you will find your policy canceled when they do find out

I have stated before that pit bulls have no business being allowed for any pet ownership. The evidence, past history, and the data show that these dogs should not be in our society. There are too many examples of when the “switch” gets literally flipped in their brains and they go bat shit crazy.

This story is a perfect example of that.

FYI, there are two “Bill” posting names on this site, I have always been in favor of getting rid of all pit bulls.

For the most satisfying experience in an urban setting I recommend shotshells in your large caliber hand gun. In Reno you can buy an interesting device…a pistol that shoots .410 shotgun shells. Perfect for unruly doggies.

In my experience most, not all but most Pit owners are trying to compensate for something, People with a tough exterior that are scared little babies on the inside. Thay have to have a tough dog because anything cute and friendly would make them weak…LOL
STOP making excuses for this breed!

I wanted to get a big ol’ mean dog and a huge monster truck once. The vet had me take a psych eval and the auto dealer had me drop trou and both promptly stated, in order for you to compensate, you can only have a Bichon Frise and a Yugo.

On the other hand, i know of several kind-hearted women who have them… not because they want a big, scary, threatening dog, but because they don’t believe pit bulls are that (or can be that when you’re not looking or they’re packing up with another few dogs), and they want to save and protect this “unfairly maligned” breed.
And then of course, because the dogs are raised like pampered human babies, given all sorts of attention and kindness and not allowed to go feral, they usually are indeed gentle types. Still, their potential for deadly viciousness does make me nervous.

What the hell is wrong with the police in this situation? All of those dogs should have been shot by the police on site. You don’t need to send one to be euthanized and send the other two don’t need to “quarantined” , they need to put down at the scene of the crime.

I have seen many a great loving pit. The problem is they are being bread to be more and more aggressive. Usually people thatown a pit have them for a reason ie protection, intimidation dog fighting etc. To bad the breed has been damaged. The same thing happend to Doberman in the 70s but over time responsible breeding has changed that. Pits have become the choice of tweekers and gang bangers these days. To bad I like dogs

I bought my pit bull in 1980. I had no idea of the history of the breed. I grew up with Little Rascals and liked the dog. My dog was raised to be a family dog. At two years old my dog ran between my legs when I opened the front door and tore apart the 17 yr old white cat in front of their family and my family. The beautiful cat was in her own yard,! I opted to euthanize my dog. My husband cried. I am here to tell you, you just never know with a pit bull what can happen. I still love the breed but will never own one again. I have seen the exact opposite in this breed. But it is not how they are raised as I know from my experience.

No not afraid of anybody just have love for a animal and of course if your going to have a aggressive animal you should be held responsible for it but to have hatred in your heart for a particular breed is just ignorance on your part and your inability to love and respect another living creation of nature it’s angry ignorant individuals like you that people should be afraid of
