Fundraisers Started for Businesses Damaged in Last Week’s Fortuna Fire

Last week, photography studio Unveiled Studios caught fire on Main Street in Fortuna. According to the Unveiled Studio Fire” GoFundMe page, the contents of the studio were destroyed.

From the Unveiled Studio Fire” GoFundMe page:

[Cady Gambrell] is so incredibly talented and has poured her heart and soul into her studio and all of her work. She is also pregnant with her first child and due in a few months. Unfortunately her shop caught fire and she lost everything.
She has spent years making our community of women feel empowered and beautiful! Let’s all do what we can to help empower, support, and uplift her through this awful time.

Although most of the damage was contained to the photography studio, firefighters said that other businesses were also damaged. Blades Barber Studio, which was one of the other businesses damaged in the fire, needs to move to a new location.

The studio wrote on their “pay expenses for new shop!” GoFundMe page:

The building next to us caught on fire which spread to blades barber studio, the roof burnt, making it unsafe to be inside. We will no longer be working there. Anything helps for the workers of blades barber studio to get a new shop & everything we need to replace. Thank you!!

Don’t these businesses have insurance? That seems like a fundamental part of owning a business.

There has been an evolution in my attitude on GoFundMe. At first I was very happy that the RHBB posted such requests because it acted as some check that the events were real. And I like giving to individual neighbors and having the ability to help in emergencies like the earthquakes in Rio Dell. And there is the freedom to chose. After all no one forces such gifts.

But with so many requests and such little information, it has become necessary to apply judgement. Which I don’t like to do. I wondered what standards others apply to these requests?
