[UPDATE 4:50 p.m.] Long, Strong Earthquake Smacks North Coast

Screenshot from Earthquake Track.
A shiver, then a shake and a long strong roll sent everyone at Redheaded Blackbelt fleeing for the door. USGS says that a 6.2 earthquake struck under the ocean west of Petrolia bout 12:10 p.m.
We have a broken mirror and some wild puppy dogs. What about you?
UPDATE 12:28 p.m.: Three smaller quakes have followed. The first at 12:23 p.m. which was a 2.5. The second at 12:24 p.m. which was a 2.7. And the third at 12:25 p.m. which was 2.7.
UPDATE 12:36 p.m.: The Sheriff’s Department is helping evacuate Bear River Casino though it is not clear that this is related. Two further earthquakes occurred. One 3.0 at 12:29 p.m. and one at 2.8.
UPDATE 12:46 p.m.: The Bluffs between Garberville and Redway are completely closed. According to the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page, CHP is turning traffic around at the Bear Canyon Road and north of Evergreen as the hillside is considered to be “still unstable.”
Update 12:53 p.m.: USGS is now reporting two new quakes–a 2.6 at 12:36 p.m. and a 3.6 at 12:47 p.m.
UPDATE 12:46 p.m.: The Bluffs between Garberville and Redway are completely closed after a slide onto Redwood Drive. According to the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page, CHP is turning traffic around at the Bear Canyon Road and north of Evergreen as the hillside is considered to be “still unstable.”
Update 12:53 p.m.: USGS is now reporting two new quakes–a 2.6 at 12:36 p.m. and a 3.6 at 12:47 p.m.: UPDATE 1:04 p.m.: Locals are clearing the roadway.
UPDATE 1:10 p.m.: More quakes continue to pepper Humboldt County. Four of them so far over 3.0. The most recent one was at 1:09 p.m

- Redway’s Shop Smart grocery store experienced significant spillage. [Photos by Valerie Lillie]
(Aside for those to whom this is critical info…Val says that the liquor aisle at Shop Smart only lost a bottle of Baileys and two bottles of wine. RHBB notes that those aisles face east/west, the rest of the aisles with all the damage face north/south. Note: Our mirror at RHBB was on a north/south wall.)
UPDATE 2:04 p.m.: Smaller quakes continue to rattle the already rattled North Coast. At 1:52 p.m., a 4.3 smacked west of Ferndale, says the USGS. The most recent quake was at 1:53 p.m. and it was 3.8.
Damage reports though relatively small continue to roll in here. Below is a video by Dylan Music showing the scattered mess left after the quake in Hydesville home.
Cafe Feast, south of Redway, caught some spillage in this photo by owner Laura Lasseter. She says, “Cafe Feast sustained messy damage with syrup bottles, broken glass and shelves emptied contents onto floor.”
UPDATE 3:44 p.m.: Redwood Drive has now reopened.
UPDATE 4:50 p.m.: Multiple earthquakes continue to roll through. The latest one was at 4:48 p.m.

It was a Tooth rattler up here in Bridgeville!!! Aftershock after aftershock to “Spice things up”!!!
Just rattled the windows for a few seconds near McKinleyville airport.
Good one I checked kym kemp right away. Thanks for the quick update. Your my go to source for all news. We love you
Actually felt it strongly in Burnt Ranch and know it was also felt in Orleans!
It was the longest & strongest I’ve felt here in Willow Creek in a bunch of years
Biggest one I know of since the one that took out the Scotia shopping center!!!
The Jerry Lee Lewis tune, “Shake, Rattle & Roll” perfectly describes the occurrence!!!
Damned straight in fortuna::teeth rattler!!
Just as my tiny human fell asleep. He slept like a baby as I went into wtf mode! 4 miles deep 45 miles nw of Eureka 6.2 Damn near on top of us.
Broken drinking glasses, wood stove in workshop fell over, emptied some shelves, almost ran out the door.
You’re lucky it wasn’t lit. You may want to bolt it down
Mr. Bear is right, you might consider bolting your stove down. We have a trailer-style, bolt-down wood stove that draws air through the pedestal. We love it. Does not draw cold air through window and does not dump hot coals onto our floor during frequent tremors. Loma Prieta, the big SF ‘quake of ‘89, dumped burning stoves over in Big Sur. New construction? Bolt it down. It’s worth it
Same goes for water heaters. Secure them
Good advice grey fox.
A good time to inspect them, especially the natural gas and propane ones.
ovens have a anti tip bracket that should be installed. Ex Appliance installer
6.2 Quake
Pretty strong shake in benbow
Dateline, Benbow.
Yep. It felt like some giant grabbed the house and shook the living crap out of it. Very rapid and sharp shaking for @30 seconds. It shook a spice jar off the kitchen counter.
The good news is my emergency alert system on my cell phone sounded a few seconds before the Earthquake. I was busy trying ignore and reset it because I thought that it was another TEST. Then it hit.
The dog was cool, he jumped off his blanket on the couch ran around all over the house. When it was over he came to like to say “What the hell was that”. He jumped back on his blanket, but kept his guard up.
Our shake alert went off during the tremble, but before it really shook out here in Dinsmore area. Kudos to the system working so well! Not many years ago that would have been impossible ?
Those of us whose phones “went off” have previously enrolled in the “Humboldt Alert” mass notification system for free by going to https://humboldtgov.org/2014/Emergency-Notifications . Not just earthquakes, which tend to do their own ‘notifications’, but various types of warnings (tsunamis, wildfires, shelter-in-place, etc.) can be made. Enroll today !
We got the alert towards the end of it.
cat wanted out, then didn’t want back in for awhile!
It’s 1:36 PM and our 2 pups are still on alert. Both barked themselves silly. Hope there aren’t any during the night. They sleep on the beds with us.
Ernie, when I was in kindergarten in WA state, I had my first earthquake experience. I yelled to my brother, “run quick to the field across the street! A giant just grabbed our chimney!”
I’ve never lived that one down!
I’ve been trying to reply but my computer won’t allow me to. I can understand why you thought that. LOL.
Strongest I’ve ever felt here in ap area and that includes the three in 1992….
I was here in Eureka in 1992. That first one was a real roller coaster of a wave.
The first one in 92 was INSANE! Saw people jumping out of second story windows in Eureka!
In ‘92 we had things flying across the room at shoulder height! Not so much this time. Much shorter duration for one thing…
92 was over 30 times stronger.
Literally
I know but this one was felt completely different than those. Must have been directed this way more than those were…
It felt different because it was 30 times stronger. Thirty times! Was in a 12′ boat in the King Salmon canal when it hit. The water tries to stay in the same spot, while everything else is moving around like spit in a frying pan. Quite the sight.
Plus, there were three strong shakers that day. Much worse than now.
I remember that one…was working in the gift shop at Confusion Hill…Crazy
The three quakes in ‘92 were way more destructive. I ran out of our bedroom barefoot and just missed a bunch of broken glass. Lots of clean-up in the office where I worked. So far, this event pales by comparison.
It was so much worse in 92’. In less than 24hrs we had 6.4, 6.7, 6.2. A lot of damage! This one was mellow ?
The first one was 7.2 not 6.4
Yep I remember as my brother and myself travelled to eureka that day and saw all the destruction in Scotia and Rio Dell.. Just felt this one where I live more than those.
Yep that last one in 92 I actually saw the green light::and it threw me across the bedroom.I live in Fortuna::down from the hospital::This one totally not as strong and came different direction even sounded differen.i hear them before they hit.yepLOTS OF SMALL AFTERSHOCKS.daughter lives in Ferndale::lots of breakage on her house..
I was in Eureka in ‘92 for the three big ones and today wasn’t even close, but definitely an attention getter.
Yeah, that was a good one! Had a little aftershock a few minutes later too. I always run outside at the first sign of one. I looked back at the house and could see my sliding glass doors were flexing and bending alot, I’m really surprised they didn’t break. Nothing fell off the shelves or wall which was quite surprising too.
I do not run outside, due to overhead power lines.
Nor do I for the same reason, as well as a few Redwood Trees around the property!!!
My power lines are underground. The best plan is to preplan your escape route. However, I remember the 1964 earthquake where a crack under the bay opened and the bay ran into it sucking a boat with it.
Where did this happen?
Anyone but you Ernie and I would have called BS
I’ve been trying to reply, but my computer won’t let me. I’m on my cell phone now. 1964 Alaska Earthquake. It caused the Crescent City Tidal wave. Google it. It is fascinating.
P.S,
I’m not above BS. I’m very selective though…
Yeah, Ernie is cool but he may be thinking of Alaska but I was not here then, so I don’t know. Learn with Ern’ I always say. Well, now I do.
The shake broke our main water pipe between the shutoff valve and the tank, 10k gallons down the hill. No power lines here, just lots of big windows that I wanted to be far away from.
I was working at Avalon in old town for the quake in 2010, I didn’t trust the old building qe were in and was out the door in 2 seconds. I was almost buried by all the ceramic plates when the shelf holing them collapsed as I was running by. Once outside I could see all those brick buildings swaying back and forth, I was amazed that none of them fell.
That connection is supposed to be flexible…
I think it depends on your Location. I can stay well away from any power lines outside, which is where I usually run to also!
Eureka… started out with a little bit of shaking… moderate (-), then a bit of up and down (moderate), and then a bit more shaking… moderate (+).
‘Earthquake alarm’ went off on the cell phone about 10 seconds into the quake. It said… ‘Duck and Cover’… I stayed in the chair.
Shallow quake… right off the Cape Mendocino.
Yep that’s what I felt. But i also felt the 4.4 one that was bit north an hour or so earlier. The first one was a subtle up and down rolling. This big un wasn’t subtle. It had me hugging the beamed opening between the living and kitchen.
I haven’t felt the little aftershocks whatsoever.
Out here in Ettersburg it was rocking and rollin. Few things fell off book shelves but so far have not found anything broken. One of the strongest quakes I have ever felt.
The geo people may have to recalculate King Peak again. Maybe finally break 4,089 ft. In elevation. The crest just keeps upthrusting. It’s wild.
This was a slip fault. Two plates going sideways opposite each other
My cell phone emergency alarm went off and couldn’t figure out what the hell is that noise. Then the Quake hit just up second later. No damage at Ridgewood and Walnut.
Yeah baby. Merry Christmas!
I was sitting in a large, heavy pickup truck in the Willits Rite Aid parking lot and my truck just started rocking and rolling, at first I thought someone was bouncing up and done on my back bumper. It lasted for a decent amount of time. I think it’s the longest one I’ve felt since living in CA. )since 1995)
Must’ve felt crazy for you folks in Hum county.
Lasted long enough here to get me ready to take myself out side. Must have hit Ferndale good. They also reported a 4.0 at 6:25 AM same area. After shocks reported off of Rio Dell also by State Earthquake center. There was lots of smaller quakes before big one. Hope it didn’t last long enough to do a lot of major damage
https://scedc.caltech.edu/recent/Maps/125-40.html
Was on the Mendocino Fracture Zone. . Why it was felt so strong in Southern Humboldt
Aftershocks still going on as of 2:10
3:30 still getting aftershocks but all in the 2 range
I’ve felt bigger. We’re in Rio and it knocked things out of the cabinets off shelves and my countertop split where there is a seam. Broken glass and stuff thrown everywhere. My 6yr old was on skates in the house I heard it got up grabbed her and then it was rolling by the time I got to the doorway. We’ve had at least 30 lil aftershocks since then. My poor dogs have ptsd rn ?
4 aftershocks so far.
Pretty impressive even down here in Northern Mendo.
We’re at Eel Rock which is ten miles east of Myers Flat. Holy cow! Strongest earthquake we’ve ever been through. It sounded like an explosion an the first shake. Lights, WiFi, internet went out for a couple minutes. The emergency broadcast came o er my cell phone telling us to take cover!
Everything is back to normal except the beat of my heart
We’re between Briceland and Ettersburg. It was choppy shaking at first, probably about 3 waves per second, which is pretty fast, followed by rolling waves farther apart, then a mild aftershock a couple of minutes later. My wife and I stood in doorways, the dogs were confused, the hanging lamps were swinging. My pulse went way up. I was glad when it stopped. I told her it had to be at least a 6. It reminded me of the one in 1992, which I experienced while in McKinleyville.
Felt in central Trinity mountains at 4,000′
The USGS shake map shows people feeling it all the way from Eugene, Reno and Santa Barbara
??5.2 here in Fortuna. Everything off the walls pipes spewing water and yes the strongest I’ve felt here in a long time. ??
https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?extent=31.16581,-139.04292&extent=46.58907,-99.40425&showUSFaults=true&baseLayer=terrain
8 aftershocks so far…might not be over!
Now 11…
Felt the one immediately after…but none of the rest.
Are Ferndale & Rio Dell/Scotia still standing?
I just called Tullys restaurant in Ferndale and they are open and serving food
Thank you for posting. I was a bit worried about them.
Petrolia would be the real question.
No doubt Petrolia got a good shaking! (We can argue about what “good” means in that context). I am guessing though that folks in Petrolia are very cautious, more than I am/ most of us are, when considering whether to place porcelain, glass and other breakables in shaking-vulnerable places.
Anyone from Petrolia/ that coastal area want to inform me/us about how you adjust your decision making with regard to buildings and items in them?
Bungee cords… edges on shelves… mainly just being aware. Not setting something either valuable or dangerous on a place where it could fall.
Still trying to figure out a good way to secure wood stoves, though. One of them “walked” about 2″ toward the wall, sliding across the top of the metal pad it sits on. No obvious place to secure tie-downs on it.
If it’s thinner metal you could try plumbers tape with some self tapping screws, put some slack in it so it can move around a little without breaking,
Around the feet that, not the whole stove
Take a look at stoves designed for manufactured homes. They bolt down to the floor as a storm-resistant measure, but work very well for conventional construction in Seismic City. We have had a Lopi Answer for years and love it. The stove sits on a pedestal and the bolts are hidden. Air is drawn through the floor into the pedestal and to the fire. No cold air is drawn through doors and windows. Sits in a nook in the wall like an insert or stove, surrounded by air. Pipe goes straight up. We have had a snappy ‘quake or two with little movement, easily corrected.
Loma Prieta has already been mentioned. The epicenter was in the Santa Lucia mountains (Big Sur) and allegedly houses burned due to tipped stoves. Anybody considering wood heat in e-quake country should think about a bolt-down.
Talk to folks who were in Petrolia in ‘92 and you’ll get some idea of a real land jammer can do.
Lots of stuff fell throughout house in scotia. Thank goodness for old growth redwood houses
My 1890 house has balloon framing. It’s not only an elegant engineering solution, it’s also quite a ride.
Yes but a lot of damage to a lot of peoples homes, gas leaks, main breaks, I saw one persons water heater got messed up and was flooding their home. The DG here is closed. The power glitch messed up computers and such. The alarms have been going off for a while.
My biggest houseplant swayed like a palm tree in a hurricane, so I grabbed hold even though it put me directly in front of my bay windows. Not too smart!
Nothing in the western part of Kneeland but was outside which tends to make small shakers unnoticed. The alert went off on my phone so it’s nice to know it works. Glad everyone so far reporting is safe if shaken.
Yup, shaken, but not stirred.
Felt it in willow creek
Wait for Juan de Fuca to let loose….9.0 +. Something to write home about.
Sharp shaking, than some sustained rolling with 2 felt aftershocks here outside of Weaverville.
One thing that always bothers me is the big warning “Do not run outside”. My advice is to make a preplan. You may be way better off to get outside. It all depends your circumstance. Your life may depend on the decisions that you make. My fave escape point is my truck cab. However, it depends on how far away it is.
That’s true in SF where the windows and facades of tall buildings come crashing down into the street. I was there in 89.
But what if a huge redwood tree creams your truck cab or a giant sinkhole swallows your truck whole. Just some thoughts on pre planning where to park as well, stable ground away from trees. Most important: #1 Always park your vehicle pointing toward the driveway entrance/ exit rather than having to back out. Allows for rapid escape from quakes, house burglars, and incoming nuclear warheads.
always drive towards the nuclear ☢️ warheads
Felt it strongly in Hyampom, but did not experience any damage. Received the alert just beforehand. Dog was surprisingly calm about it.
My dog barked, I got a text alert & then the shaking started. Blanche is a better alert than USGS ?
But not as specific I’d guess. It was always hard to be sure what my dogs were barking at, the mail person being just as important as an earthquake.
We got the alert when the quake was 2/3 done
Blanche is such a good girl!
You always have the best info – thanks
?
I was in the dairy isle at Safeway in Fortuna. I hear this…thud, thud, thud…and while I’m thinking WTF, I watch cream cheese catons hitting the floor.
Then it started rocking and rolling as ceiling tiles are crashing down.
Was allowed to purchase what was in my cart, but I had barely started shopping.
“Drop. Cover. Hold on.”https://www.cdc.gov/disasters/earthquakes/during.html
Just had a small aftershock @ 1:32P here in So Hum.
Very strong and long roller coaster ride up here on Tompkins Hill…Sadly, my favorite bust of The Duke bit the dust…
I was outside, feet on the ground when this one hit. A different experience than being in a building where I almost aways have been in previous ones (CA native, so I’ve been through a few).
Yep! My phone alarm worked. Maybe the first time it has. It went off maybe a second or 2 before the shaking started. But it all seemed to happen simultaneously so I am not exactly sure. (I will certainly take heed next time when I hear that ‘siren’ sound again!).
It came in 3 waves in Salmon Creek, building in strength. It was so interesting actually feeling the ground moving underfoot and seeing the trees swaying!
I have the most evidence of a quake in a LONG time in my house. Many items fell down; some broke. Drawers were WIDE open and my 8 foot (heavy!) sliding glass door was opened 4″!
Just goes to show what can happen any time and make a BIG shift (pun intended) in our lives!
I have always had a suspicion that earthquakes can have some behaviors that acts like waves. It can be directional like waves depending on the way it hits the terrain, be reflected by more resistant ground then bounce back and forth like water in a bath tub. Totally unscientific observation but around where I live it does seem to come in three or so waves too.
Was timber marking near Chehalis, Washington in the Capitol Forest. Was at the base of a hill in the forest on a flat. We heard what we thought was a fighter jet approaching from the nearby airbase as was common in the area. Instead, we watched a ground wave come from the top of the hill until it hit us and we could barely stand up. The ground cover was 100% sword fern cover with an older second growth forest canopy of Douglas fir. We could literally see the ground wave roll through the ferns as if it was water. Grabbed onto a 4 foot dbh fir and held on. Several snags and widow makers fell throughout the forest. I always thought you would be safer in a forest versus a suburb. After that experience, don’t be in a forest in a 6+ earthquake although it was a truly cool, frightening experience.
I seen one too It was on flat ground with short grass and a wave about 5-7 inches high came and passed us. It’s still vivid in my memory
Like Kym, I have seen structural damage appear to be worse in one direction vs. another. Years ago when I was living in the woods in SoHum, I actually saw the energy wave coming as a line of trees would suddenly shake, then stop as the wave rolled toward me, under me, and shook the cabin. True, my perception of the event may have been enhanced but it was so much like an ocean wave going through stone and clay.
Lots of stuff off the walls fire alarm going right now grundmans window broke just had another aftershock
a tradition here at work, we start a poll. Whom ever get closet to the magnitude. Five dollar buy in, the pot was up to 65 bucks. Bill won with the 6.2 guess. now he’s buying lunch.
Felt it up here north of Cresent City.
It was a little shake followed by a bigger one.
No damage.
If you, like most of us, immediately looked at Kyms site for info and turned on KMUD, please use this moment to imagine what you would do if they were not here.
Makes me shudder.
If you feel the same please go donate right now.
How much is it worth to you?
To have local trustworthy news from those who live in our community and care about it? To have up to date reports?
To me its invaluable. I put it up there with lifeflight.
Right! I was driving 101 north of Willits and heard about it on KMUD. When I got to Willits, they said they felt it down there.
Just give me that old time rock and roll, that kinda music that shakes my soul ! Was quite nice to have things latched shut ,minimal damage here in Petrolia.
Didn’t seem to post 20 ft Christmas tree, 3000 + led lights ,did rattle some decorations off
I’m just wondering what good a text alert is if it happens only seconds before a quake. When I lived in SF, I was sitting on the sofa reading one night when suddenly my cat, who was curled up beside me, leaped straight up into the air. A second later I felt an earthquake. I said to the cat, “Well, thanks a lot for the warning.” I was out on the street in the financial district when the Loma Prieta quake hit. Truly terrifying, though no one around me was hurt. Lamp posts were swaying like trees in the wind. Only 15 seconds, I recall. After that I really wanted to move out of of The City. Ironically, I was in the Bay Area visiting family when the earthquakes hit Humboldt in 1992. I hope this episode is over and everyone stays safe.
I recall this night in fall in SF (San Francisco) they said “Yo lil homey grab onto the fire hydrant” I did and just the vibrating effect of all the connected inner workings of the pipes all throughout the west coast and the east coast then to me took about, well, I’d say bout 3.7 seconds. AMAZING. It chipped my tooth. I was sitting cross legged listing to Asia then, next thing I know, I am standing outside with my dog attacking me while the entire cul de sac erupted in completely self centered chaos tho by the direction of my girlfriends parents who I think liked Asia I was directed to the hydrant. There it stood (though is something less than four feet tall actually stooding?) I ran directly at it and smacked my face on it and now I have kind of a better looking brother of that guy in Fargo who get thrown into the wood chipper look. I immediately thought “damn may as well grab this shard of tooth, hold in mouth then fire it off into fire hydrant for satisfying “ting!” sound. And then, after that, as I stood above the albeitly flagging and shaking (regarding vibration) infrastructural metalwork running from west to east (represent! One love!) to there, my small space, I regarded a floppy tiny Ironman that prompted me to come to the moment where I was like “ FUCK THIS! I’m going home!” At the time I lived in a yurt…well really just a tarp strung up in some madrone but I think that where the term yurt comes from that an shit. A mongolian or maldorian whatever nice guy told me it’s the same even bereft of equestrian nomadic herdsmen or lasers. A pine cone hit me right on the head but I’ve since cut that tree down.
Couldn’t have been too strong cause I slept right thru it!! Now 92 that day was knocked off my feet and that night everyone (5 of us) woke up!! 2nd floor was shaking so much almost impossible to get out of bed to flee!!
Thought I was gonna ride that bed down into the rubble then it was over!
The one that took down the bridge on 101 at CR in 81 was a real ride too!!
I think we are up to 54 today…
Is 101 South clear at this time? 4:10pm
If more people were vaccinated this earth quake never would have happened.
A few broken dishes and my humpty dumpy who i set on the edge as my temblor monitor (he had been put back together again many times)
In Arcata phone alarm came on well into earthquake, rattled table and chairs, but no damage, nothing fell off the open shelves. In ‘92 we slept outside, the quake rocked us awake and we saw green fireballs in the sky!
WAIT! Are you saying the nursery rhyme is telling a lie? You mean they COULD have put Humpty back together again??!?
Why does this say anywhere what road those boulders are on?
The photos are part of the 12:46 update that states the bluffs between Garberville and Redway are closed. The road is called Redwood Drive, but locals just call this area the Bluffs but I’ve updated.
They need fix their scales this earthquake wasn’t even close to a 6.2 when we had one that size it was in 2010 and it destroyed more and was stronger by far this one was probably a high 3
Strike-slip earthquake , but I repeat myself
The 2010 earthquake was closer to Eureka. This 2021 quake was about 50 miles further away. Energy spreads out (roughly) as the distance to the quake squared. Less distance = Bigger quake.
(All other things being equal.)
The mag scales have been updated and far more sensors are deployed over a much broader area now than ever before…meaning the 6.2 is far more accurate than woulda been 10yrs+ ago.
Moment magnitude scale is used now vs the outdated & less accurate Ricter or magnitude scale.
Your locality (and various features of it) likely insulated you from mich of the motion.
Either way, your singular personal experience & sense of magnitude doesn’t carry near enough weight to upend a dependable measurment method.
Had u been on the coast you’d be singing a diff tune
I guess it was strong enough to momentarily help us forget the circus pandemic show for a brief moment in time!
