Mr. Bear is right, you might consider bolting your stove down. We have a trailer-style, bolt-down wood stove that draws air through the pedestal. We love it. Does not draw cold air through window and does not dump hot coals onto our floor during frequent tremors. Loma Prieta, the big SF ‘quake of ‘89, dumped burning stoves over in Big Sur. New construction? Bolt it down. It’s worth it

Pretty strong shake in benbow

Dateline, Benbow.

Yep. It felt like some giant grabbed the house and shook the living crap out of it. Very rapid and sharp shaking for @30 seconds. It shook a spice jar off the kitchen counter.

The good news is my emergency alert system on my cell phone sounded a few seconds before the Earthquake. I was busy trying ignore and reset it because I thought that it was another TEST. Then it hit.

The dog was cool, he jumped off his blanket on the couch ran around all over the house. When it was over he came to like to say “What the hell was that”. He jumped back on his blanket, but kept his guard up.

Those of us whose phones “went off” have previously enrolled in the “Humboldt Alert” mass notification system for free by going to https://humboldtgov.org/2014/Emergency-Notifications . Not just earthquakes, which tend to do their own ‘notifications’, but various types of warnings (tsunamis, wildfires, shelter-in-place, etc.) can be made. Enroll today !

It felt different because it was 30 times stronger. Thirty times! Was in a 12′ boat in the King Salmon canal when it hit. The water tries to stay in the same spot, while everything else is moving around like spit in a frying pan. Quite the sight.

Yeah, that was a good one! Had a little aftershock a few minutes later too. I always run outside at the first sign of one. Nothing fell off the shelves or wall which was quite surprising too.

The shake broke our main water pipe between the shutoff valve and the tank, 10k gallons down the hill. No power lines here, just lots of big windows that I wanted to be far away from.
I was working at Avalon in old town for the quake in 2010, I didn’t trust the old building qe were in and was out the door in 2 seconds. I was almost buried by all the ceramic plates when the shelf holing them collapsed as I was running by. Once outside I could see all those brick buildings swaying back and forth, I was amazed that none of them fell.

Eureka… started out with a little bit of shaking… moderate (-), then a bit of up and down (moderate), and then a bit more shaking… moderate (+).

‘Earthquake alarm’ went off on the cell phone about 10 seconds into the quake. It said… ‘Duck and Cover’… I stayed in the chair.

Shallow quake… right off the Cape Mendocino.

We’re between Briceland and Ettersburg. It was choppy shaking at first, probably about 3 waves per second, which is pretty fast, followed by rolling waves farther apart, then a mild aftershock a couple of minutes later. My wife and I stood in doorways, the dogs were confused, the hanging lamps were swinging. My pulse went way up. I was glad when it stopped. I told her it had to be at least a 6. It reminded me of the one in 1992, which I experienced while in McKinleyville.

No doubt Petrolia got a good shaking! (We can argue about what “good” means in that context). I am guessing though that folks in Petrolia are very cautious, more than I am/ most of us are, when considering whether to place porcelain, glass and other breakables in shaking-vulnerable places.
Anyone from Petrolia/ that coastal area want to inform me/us about how you adjust your decision making with regard to buildings and items in them?

Bungee cords… edges on shelves… mainly just being aware. Not setting something either valuable or dangerous on a place where it could fall.
Still trying to figure out a good way to secure wood stoves, though. One of them “walked” about 2″ toward the wall, sliding across the top of the metal pad it sits on. No obvious place to secure tie-downs on it.

If it’s thinner metal you could try plumbers tape with some self tapping screws, put some slack in it so it can move around a little without breaking,

Take a look at stoves designed for manufactured homes. They bolt down to the floor as a storm-resistant measure, but work very well for conventional construction in Seismic City. We have had a Lopi Answer for years and love it. The stove sits on a pedestal and the bolts are hidden. Air is drawn through the floor into the pedestal and to the fire. No cold air is drawn through doors and windows. Sits in a nook in the wall like an insert or stove, surrounded by air. Pipe goes straight up. We have had a snappy ‘quake or two with little movement, easily corrected.
Loma Prieta has already been mentioned. The epicenter was in the Santa Lucia mountains (Big Sur) and allegedly houses burned due to tipped stoves. Anybody considering wood heat in e-quake country should think about a bolt-down.

One thing that always bothers me is the big warning “Do not run outside”. My advice is to make a preplan. You may be way better off to get outside. It all depends your circumstance. Your life may depend on the decisions that you make. My fave escape point is my truck cab. However, it depends on how far away it is.

But what if a huge redwood tree creams your truck cab or a giant sinkhole swallows your truck whole. Just some thoughts on pre planning where to park as well, stable ground away from trees. Most important: #1 Always park your vehicle pointing toward the driveway entrance/ exit rather than having to back out. Allows for rapid escape from quakes, house burglars, and incoming nuclear warheads.

I was outside, feet on the ground when this one hit. A different experience than being in a building where I almost aways have been in previous ones (CA native, so I’ve been through a few).
Yep! My phone alarm worked. Maybe the first time it has. It went off maybe a second or 2 before the shaking started. But it all seemed to happen simultaneously so I am not exactly sure. (I will certainly take heed next time when I hear that ‘siren’ sound again!).
It came in 3 waves in Salmon Creek, building in strength. It was so interesting actually feeling the ground moving underfoot and seeing the trees swaying!
I have the most evidence of a quake in a LONG time in my house. Many items fell down; some broke. Drawers were WIDE open and my 8 foot (heavy!) sliding glass door was opened 4″!
Just goes to show what can happen any time and make a BIG shift (pun intended) in our lives!

I have always had a suspicion that earthquakes can have some behaviors that acts like waves. It can be directional like waves depending on the way it hits the terrain, be reflected by more resistant ground then bounce back and forth like water in a bath tub. Totally unscientific observation but around where I live it does seem to come in three or so waves too.

We heard what we thought was a fighter jet approaching from the nearby airbase as was common in the area. Instead, we watched a ground wave come from the top of the hill until it hit us and we could barely stand up. The ground cover was 100% sword fern cover with an older second growth forest canopy of Douglas fir. We could literally see the ground wave roll through the ferns as if it was water. Grabbed onto a 4 foot dbh fir and held on. Several snags and widow makers fell throughout the forest. I always thought you would be safer in a forest versus a suburb. After that experience, don’t be in a forest in a 6+ earthquake although it was a truly cool, frightening experience.

I seen one too It was on flat ground with short grass and a wave about 5-7 inches high came and passed us. It’s still vivid in my memory

Like Kym, I have seen structural damage appear to be worse in one direction vs. another. Years ago when I was living in the woods in SoHum, I actually saw the energy wave coming as a line of trees would suddenly shake, then stop as the wave rolled toward me, under me, and shook the cabin. True, my perception of the event may have been enhanced but it was so much like an ocean wave going through stone and clay.

a tradition here at work, we start a poll. Whom ever get closet to the magnitude. Five dollar buy in, the pot was up to 65 bucks. Bill won with the 6.2 guess. now he’s buying lunch.

Felt it up here north of Cresent City.
It was a little shake followed by a bigger one.
No damage.

If you, like most of us, immediately looked at Kyms site for info and turned on KMUD, please use this moment to imagine what you would do if they were not here.
Makes me shudder.

If you feel the same please go donate right now.
How much is it worth to you?
To have local trustworthy news from those who live in our community and care about it? To have up to date reports?
To me its invaluable. I put it up there with lifeflight.

Right! I was driving 101 north of Willits and heard about it on KMUD. When I got to Willits, they said they felt it down there.

I’m just wondering what good a text alert is if it happens only seconds before a quake. When I lived in SF, I was sitting on the sofa reading one night when suddenly my cat, who was curled up beside me, leaped straight up into the air. A second later I felt an earthquake. I said to the cat, “Well, thanks a lot for the warning.” I was out on the street in the financial district when the Loma Prieta quake hit. Truly terrifying, though no one around me was hurt. Lamp posts were swaying like trees in the wind. Only 15 seconds, I recall. After that I really wanted to move out of of The City. Ironically, I was in the Bay Area visiting family when the earthquakes hit Humboldt in 1992. I hope this episode is over and everyone stays safe.

I recall this night in fall in SF (San Francisco) they said “Yo lil homey grab onto the fire hydrant” I did and just the vibrating effect of all the connected inner workings of the pipes all throughout the west coast and the east coast then to me took about, well, I’d say bout 3.7 seconds. AMAZING. It chipped my tooth. I was sitting cross legged listing to Asia then, next thing I know, I am standing outside with my dog attacking me while the entire cul de sac erupted in completely self centered chaos tho by the direction of my girlfriends parents who I think liked Asia I was directed to the hydrant. There it stood (though is something less than four feet tall actually stooding?) I ran directly at it and smacked my face on it and now I have kind of a better looking brother of that guy in Fargo who get thrown into the wood chipper look. I immediately thought “damn may as well grab this shard of tooth, hold in mouth then fire it off into fire hydrant for satisfying “ting!” sound. And then, after that, as I stood above the albeitly flagging and shaking (regarding vibration) infrastructural metalwork running from west to east (represent! One love!) to there, my small space, I regarded a floppy tiny Ironman that prompted me to come to the moment where I was like “ FUCK THIS! I’m going home!” At the time I lived in a yurt…well really just a tarp strung up in some madrone but I think that where the term yurt comes from that an shit. A mongolian or maldorian whatever nice guy told me it’s the same even bereft of equestrian nomadic herdsmen or lasers. A pine cone hit me right on the head but I’ve since cut that tree down.

Couldn’t have been too strong cause I slept right thru it!! Now 92 that day was knocked off my feet and that night everyone (5 of us) woke up!! 2nd floor was shaking so much almost impossible to get out of bed to flee!!
Thought I was gonna ride that bed down into the rubble then it was over!
The one that took down the bridge on 101 at CR in 81 was a real ride too!!

In Arcata phone alarm came on well into earthquake, rattled table and chairs, but no damage, nothing fell off the open shelves. In ‘92 we slept outside, the quake rocked us awake and we saw green fireballs in the sky!

They need fix their scales this earthquake wasn’t even close to a 6.2 when we had one that size it was in 2010 and it destroyed more and was stronger by far this one was probably a high 3

The 2010 earthquake was closer to Eureka. This 2021 quake was about 50 miles further away. Energy spreads out (roughly) as the distance to the quake squared. Less distance = Bigger quake.
(All other things being equal.)

The mag scales have been updated and far more sensors are deployed over a much broader area now than ever before…meaning the 6.2 is far more accurate than woulda been 10yrs+ ago.
Moment magnitude scale is used now vs the outdated & less accurate Ricter or magnitude scale.

Your locality (and various features of it) likely insulated you from mich of the motion.
Either way, your singular personal experience & sense of magnitude doesn’t carry near enough weight to upend a dependable measurment method.

Had u been on the coast you’d be singing a diff tune

I guess it was strong enough to momentarily help us forget the circus pandemic show for a brief moment in time!
