CHP Receives Grant Funding to Combat Speeding

Speed and aggressive driving continue to be a major concern on California roadways, and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is receiving additional resources to combat these dangerous driving behaviors statewide.

The Speed Prevention, Education and Enforcement Deterrence (SPEED) grant, through the California Office of Traffic Safety, aims to reduce the number of fatal and injury crashes related to speed by funding additional CHP enforcement patrols and public awareness campaigns throughout California through September 30, 2023.

Speed is a factor in approximately 40 percent of all fatal and injury crashes in California.  Between October 1, 2019 and September 30, 2020, there were 26,256 speed-related crashes that killed 290 people and injured 38,157 others.

“Reducing dangerous driving behaviors continues to be a high priority for the CHP,” said CHP Commissioner Amanda Ray.  “The SPEED grant provides the necessary funding to bolster resources and combat this growing trend of reckless and inexcusable driving behavior.”

From January 1, 2020, through September 20, 2021, the CHP used federal funding in a similar grant program to implement educational and enforcement efforts to combat dangerous driving behaviors by conducting enhanced speed enforcement operations on state routes.  During this time, the CHP issued nearly 50,000 citations to motorists exceeding 100 miles per hour, collaborated with allied law enforcement agencies and posted anti-speeding and aggressive driving behavior messages on social media.

The mission of the CHP is to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security.

That anyone would think that not sufficiently funding day to day duties can be remedied by sprinkling with the occasional grant… Lmao.

Time to put up more plate scanners with a speed indicator capability. That way they can just dispense the speeding tickets remotely!

Bring back the Double Nickel!

Everyone was going 70 even then, but at least they were not going 95…

Cars used to have 400 CI engines and 4BBL Carbs. Now a Honda Accord can out accelerate an average pickup, which still has a 400 CI engine…

Filled my Acura with $85 worth of gas, and I get 30 mpg because I drive reasonable…

You can’t afford a $500 speeding ticket and your insurance to go way up!

So don’t drive stupid, and try to go where you are going BEFORE you do your drugs…

Yes what we need is a police state to improve our freedom. Brilliant.

However, i would definitely like to see the CHP pulling over these 18 wheelers doing 70 though. They pass passenger cars on curves. Which just scares the daylights out of me.

Totally agree, leave us 112 mph Fiestas alone, tired of doing 65mph when my tires are rated to do 112 mph all day long.

The CHP needs a grant to fund speeding? Isnt that CHP #1 job?
So, when the funding runs out we can all throttle up?

The funding is needed. This will allow the CHP to put more patrols on the streets and highways increasing their ability to notice and catch speeders.

Hard to catch speeders if the chipper is only doing 75 mph and that criminal low life speeder is doing 90 mph with a radar detector. As usual the everyday day hard worker gets tagged doing 76 mph because he was not paying attention after a hard day’s work . But hey , he can afford it, cause he works to pay the wages of everyone else. Thank you! State of California, crack me up.

I would ask that they concentrate on big rigs and recreational vehicles towing cars that seem to be unaware of the 55mph limit for those vehicles.

How about when a truck driver decides to take the left lane in order to pass another truck, that is already going 55. Then they take 5 minutes to slowly pass the other truck.

That’s a real problem, maybe us the emergency lane to pass, that shoulder doesn’t get much use, crack me up.

I would ask that they concentrate on the Broadway drag strip in Eureka north of Bayshore mall after dark. Or, wait, anywhere along the Eureka-Arcata (un)safety corridor which is clearly marked with digital signs to show everyone that they’re doing 20mph over the posted limit. Do I have to choose only one?

Does the grant include aggressive, texting, tailgating, hit and runs and high speed chases?

Driving in Northern Humboldt has become Very dangerous. Everyday people are driving way over the speed limit weaving in and out of cars in heavy traffic even when it’s pouring down rain. I’ve had several close calls lately where I’m driving the speed limit in traffic and a car is tailgating me by inches. Just riding on my ass. Even when I’m trying to pass 2 semi’s in pouring down rain they’re literally right on my bumper. As soon as I get past the semi the car goes flying by like 80 mph in pouring down rain. When you’re behind a semi or even full size pickup truck the water coming off the vehicle makes hurricane like conditions. The other day I was taking my son to school and this lady was driving like a maniac. She was driving super dangerous in the rain. I get to the school and she’s actually dropping her kids off. Tell me….is it more important to be on time or to be alive???? A person got killed at the Trinidad exit a couple of weeks ago at school pickup time. Super sad and super preventable. If you’re worried about being late try preparing to leave sooner. Making up literally seconds on the highway isn’t worth killing someone else. You may not care if you die, but believe me people driving other vehicles don’t want to die that die, because of your wreck less driving.

I wonder how much of the current spate of very high speed driving is due to social media glorifying reckless driving?

We’ve seen similar impacts on other kinds of thoughtless or irresponsible behaviors because of social media posting so it seems reasonable that driving is also subject to it.

What about giving tickets to those drivers who poke along at 40 mph on the 55 mph two lane highway, then, when a passing lane is reached, speed up to play “follow the leader”, (where they have to be the leader). They slow right down again after the passing lane has ended.

Driving highway 299 is always a lesson and reminder of how clueless many (not all) drivers have become. Pulling over to allow others to pass is mostly a lost curtesy. Also, when reaching a straight spot, and no one is coming, and there is a divided line, slow down to allow someone to pass. Give them a wave if they need it.

Driving used to be fun. Now it’s just a challenge.

Does this mean that the CHP, sherif and other cops will stop speeding too? Or use turn signals? Or not use phones while driving? Almost 80% of the time I see a cop, they are breaking one of these “laws”.

Or lights on through the Eur-Arc corridor. Or lights on when windshield wipers are on. Or pulling in right in front of you from an intersection side street. Or sitting at a stop sign letting all cross traffic go ahead while you’re sitting behind the chp.
