Three Dead; APD and DTF Investigating
With the permission of the Mad River Union, we’re reprinting Kevin Hoover’s reporting on two tragedies that occurred this week.

Ahearn said police are concerned that all three deaths could have been caused by drug overdoses or fentanyl exposure. He urged those who are planning to take drugs to exercise caution.
The three deceased individuals are in the custody of the Coroner’s Office. Toxicology results aren’t expected for weeks. Meanwhile, police are already attempting to trace the source of any drugs the three might have taken, Ahearn said.
The first two victims – a man and a woman – were reported by someone who entered a tent in Carlson Park at 4:01 p.m. and found two possible bodies.
Eight minutes later, a 54-year-old man was reported overdosing outside the Soilscape Solutions building on Samoa Boulevard, being used for the City of Arcata and Arcata House Partnership’s new “Safe Parking” program. The area outside the front gate has become what the reporting party called a “staging area,” which is occupied by vehicles not admitted to the facility. CPR was apparently administered to the man, but he died at some point thereafter.
Identities are being withheld pending notification of relatives by the Coroner’s Office.

Article said that may, 2020 to april, 2021 there were about 100,000 deaths in usa, about 64,000 due to synthetic opiods like fentanyl. Most of the fentanyl is made in China.

One reticence I have with the CIS numbers you provided — by their own admission they have a low-immigration/pro-immigrant philosophy and their research is geared towards supporting their point of view. I’m not disagreeing with the idea but it should make one cautious of their numbers.
I think most thinking folks struggle with the problem of immigration. It’s largely driven by economic forces and our own ancestors got here because of the same desires. But unchecked immigration has the potential to disrupt the economy to the point where everyone suffers to a degree.
But there are those fleeing brutal conditions elsewhere who see the US as a salvation. Where’s the compassion for those folks?

If there are any studies that peg the number of immigrants seek asylum and jobs to rug smuggling, I’d like to see them. My understanding is that the vast majority is smuggled by ship or hidden in cars and trucks legally entering the US. Since the US needs a migrant work force at the same time that living conditions have become impossibly dangerous in Central America, the least we can do is get our facts strait.

Almost always respiratory arrest – they stop breathing. I had a friend OD once, blue in the lips, not breathing. His pulse was fine. The blood was pumping but no oxygen was getting into it. I administered a shot of narcan to him as well as mouth to mouth. He recovered.

Opioids absolutely do have both sedative and hypnotic effects at high doses, though, which is why people who overdose become unconscious. If someone leaves a loaded gun out available to a child and a death occurs, they are in trouble. If someone’s dog bites a person, they are held responsible. If a bar serves too much alcohol to a person, and the drunk driver kills someone, the bar is in trouble. It’s not just happening at the homeless camps. There’s also group down in Mendocino County called MCAHVN that has been housing a lot of the addicts. The SUNSET local hotel across the street from Safeway downtown Ukiah is where they love to house them all. Had a lady dead in a MCAHVN paid for hotel room for over 2 days that the maid found her. Where’s the MCAVN workers why AREN’T they stopping by the hotel a couple times a day to check and see how the clients were doing rather than paying for the party drug den?
One of the local Treatment Services has just been ousted for misappropriation of funds and embezzlement, all of their services are shut down immediately. They will all be reverting back to RCS. Manzanita is no more. I was talking with one of their clients the other day and I asked her about being homeless and how did you dry your stuff out when it rained or things got dirty how did you clean them? She flat out said to me…” that didn’t matter, I can always get free shit from somewhere I would just throw it all out, leave it who cares . I’d either go steal some more or go to one of the agencies and they’d give me more stuff no problem .” Right now along the railroad tracks in Ukiah stretching from Brush Street to Ford Road is a large homeless encampment larger than the one by the airport ever was. But they can do nothing to rectify it the people are packed under the railroad cars with piles of garbage nearly a mile long probably a hundred people living underneath those cars as I write this. They can glamorize and talk about cleaning up all the garbage piles down there that’s seen by the General Public. One of them said what are they going to do with us they drive us out of here? Where are we going to go next ? It’s a really easy place to hide all of it, just out of sight . How is there no limit on the amount of free sleeping bags, tents, hotel rooms, clothing, food services within certain time frames/limits draining the grants. Considering what that young lady said to me you’re looking at thousands upon thousands of dollars worth of items that she just walks away from when they get dirty or don’t serve her well anymore . X that by all these clients…follow the money right down the drain. No one is looking or tracking the outcomes. With all that being said the issue is accountability we can throw all the money in the world at these addiction problems but if it is not monitored with goals set and actual real outcomes, nothing is going to change for anyone. If this broken platform is advocated for as THE BEST OPTIONS, OUR BEST WORK by the courts, the systems…just throw the money at it but nothing else what do we expect?
People take drugs. Drugs kill some people. This has been going on for my entire adult life (I am 75). Blaming the president is ludicrous.
There are strategies that actually work to avoid death from overdose. Freely available clean drugs and safe spaces in which to use them, along with available counseling and help with detoxing. Safe shelter and relief from the despair that dominates many impoverished people in our society. Help not punishment.

I cannot believe how many people in my and my siblings graduating classes who have died from alcohol and drug addiction. I don’t know what the Humboldt county schools are doing with this generation to education on the dangers of alcohol and drug addiction and death but I don’t even recall a single discussion by the adults in my entire K-12 years. Not saying it starts in “K”. Also, every drug imaginable could be found availed for purchase every single day on campus of my high school.
