Helicopter Overflights the Last Two Days Worry Southern Humboldt Community

Low flying helicopter

The helicopter captured on film over Salmon Creek. [Photo provided]

Yesterday and today, the Southern Humboldt community has had multiple overflights by a single military style helicopter. One reader believes the helicopter from yesterday and the one he saw today are not the same.

The helicopter, both yesterday and today, flew low and either under radar or was in some way blocked from showing on FlightRadar.

Two readers have told us that there was no tail number either.

Cannabis growers, legal and illegal, in Southern Humboldt, who cultivated during the days of heavy CAMP raids which began in 1983 and even heavier raids which used the National Guard during Operation Greensweep in 1990 have an antagonistic relationship with helicopters and low flying planes as flyovers were used to scout for marijuana cultivation areas since 1975. The flyovers have been the subject of legal challenges in various forms since 1977 which have led to some curbing of earlier practices.

low helicopter

Presumably the same helicopter as the one shown above as it was taken roughly a half hour earlier than the one a relatively short distance away in the Salmon Creek watershed. [Photo taken over the Briceland area today.]

While you might be right about the raids, it ain’t the army if it’s surveillance.

CA Air National Guard has eight of these UH-72a helicopters and would be the likely culprit. Any identification number would likely be in black lettering located low on the side of the fuselage at the rear. These are also sold as the civilian Eurocopter model EC135, but not in the military color scheme (among other not so obvious differences).

Is HCMET.
MET is an interagency task force.

As part of Interagency task forces the CA Air Natl Guard has assisted with surveillance and raids for several decades now.

Includes Officers & Agents of HCSO, APD, EPD, FPD, CA AG, CA Natl Guard, DEA, & likely more

Some people will bitch about a good night’s sleep.
The folks casting aspersions are the same group who refers to the generations who allowed our country’s manufacturing might to be sold off in bulk as “Boomers”, and “The Greatest Generation”.
The same who’ve become xenophobic to the point of self ostracization.
The same folks that have allowed our government to become a non-functioning shit show.
The same folks who’ve tolerated women and minorities making less money for the same job as they.
Thanks for decades of poor economic policy and zero forethought!
Enjoy what you have, and try at the very least to be a source of positivity in your later years, because you’ve guaranteed that everyone else’s will be fucked.

They could let it burn like Mt. Shasta Subdivision and shoot the fleeing growers. Trinity Pines East and the Lava fire collide.

Law enforcement shot and killed fleeing grower that supposedly brandished a firearm. Sounds pretty tense on the lava fire

Anybody interested should check out the satellite images of that Juniper Flat area near the Lava Fire. I’ve never seen so many greenhouses and gardens blown up all next to each other. It makes The Pines look mellow! How does that happen? How do they just let that happen while people in Humboldt are being beat up over much less? Do the Hmong have some deal that makes them untouchable?! It’s crazy…https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/7581/

I do miss the stories every year. “My friend works out at the same gym as a bunch of cops. One of them works on drug task force. He said this year, they are hitting everybody hard”…… The year goes by and only 1% of the grows get busted, LOL.

They already did the math. Even if they busted 100 grows a day in the triangle, they couldn’t make a dent even after a full year of everyday busts. These guys would be lucky to hit 15 farms in a day as a whole team. Of course the cops in Humboldt think they are going to go hard this year. They have been saying that for decades. They are going to do busts from Aug-Dec and once again only 10 people will be arrested.

If you have an illegal grow, you better pull your plants and go! I am sick and tired of legal and illegal pot growers. They are a blight on our society leading may folks both young and old onto hard drugs. Enjoy the flights going over your gardens and placing you on camera (be sure to smile), and GPS. What are you going to do when they come for you. Blue green algee of the mountains!

What do you know about illegal growers? Probably just what you hear on the news. Best to comment on issues you are informed on. Many ‘illegal growers’ are the real roots of this community, who don’t desire to pay the government for protection, nor do they want water board officials or DFG on their property. They are not government bootlickers and they prefer to do their work in the shadows and know how to keep one step ahead of the latest tricks to catch them. They are the smarter and the more interesting of the growers that I know. Just my 2 cents

You forgot to mention it’s also a way for someone lower educated with no real world skills to make some actual money. Let’s be honest, no one does it for any other reason that you or anyone else has mentioned other than to make it rain while sitting back and watching plants grow. Don’t believe me? Grow something else in agriculture..why not? Because there is no underground willing to pay . Whatever, dirt bags will always be just that.

My favorite “dirt bags” are Fox Farm. Always thought that would be a great ad, this is one dirt bag you’re gonna love. As I always say, it’s the one industry actively moving topsoil back upslope.

It’s pretty clear that these guys are working with sheriffs and other government agencies to find illegal growers and maybe squatters growing on public lands.

It’s a seven year siege on illegal weed. Even tho’ it’s been decades of siege, now they can utilize high tech to spy & fine ppl into losing their land. They did it to the Native Americans & they will do it to the homesteaders, especially with the upcoming Safe Homes Act. ( where you need a permit, even retroactively) for every structure over 120 sq ft., and everything must pass code!

Nearly 100% no chance under direct Army chain of command but nearly 100% chance is California Air National Guard.
They have worked with CAMP from the start.
And are likely working directly w/ HCMET & COMMET, CA AG, & DEA, as usual.

Flightradar only tracks aircraft w/ ADS-B transponders and, in SOME areas, MLAT.

Definitely not Army. That’s in violation of Posse Comitatus. National guard under direction of the Sheriff most likely.

I do believe that all aircraft are required to have the ADS-B transponder this year. Flightradar24 and other companies are willing to block information upon request from VIP, LEO and military aircraft. And, of course, military aircraft can just turn it off.

I wonder what’s the point of paying for a helicopter to fly when satellite imagery is so good? Is it intimidation? Or just using up that budget?
I’ve seen the satellite images that the county uses, and it’s very detailed and current.

Cannot get a warrant on satellite imagery. Need actual visual for search warrant. Satellite imagery can generate an abatement letter but not a warrant…. I would advise anybody who can’t stand the heat to get the hell out of the kitchen

This helicopter was also circling homes with no cannabis. It was so incredibly loud, and flew twice over my home SO low, that it terrified my cat. Super disrespectful of residential spaces and pets. Not acceptable. It is illegal to fly below 500 feet. I hope people call and complain.
