Artists Dismantling Capitalism Conference ‘Explores Creative Ways to Build a Better Future’

This is a press release from Cooperation Humboldt:

Local nonprofit Cooperation Humboldt will host the fourth annual Artists Dismantling Capitalism conference online February 26-28.

This free/donation based Symposium offers 17 sessions facilitated by artists, community members and scholars. Sessions will focus on a wide range of topics including theater, music cooperatives, decolonizing the body, Hip Hop, Solidarity Economics, spirituality and more. Each session offers a glimpse into the use of artistic and creative practice in re-imaging and creating a new society based on a Solidarity Economy. In addition to local community members and artists, the conference will feature visiting facilitators including Kwame Braxton and Shambe Jones of Cooperation Jackson, MS., Nati Linares of New Economy Network, David Ferris of the Highlander Center and more. This year’s symposium will also mark the virtual launch of “Just Imagine,” a public art show featuring pieces imagining a just transition to tomorrow’s world. Since our symposium will be online this year, we will continue the tradition of feeding folks by gathering non-perishable food through a food drive that will be distributed through our Little Free Pantry network. Food collection barrels can be found at the Northcoast Coop in Eureka or Arcata.

“The aim of Artists Dismantling Capitalism is to bring together artists, culture workers, social change agents and anyone and everyone who knows that we can collectively create a society that is loving, compassionate, inclusive and beautiful,” said Cooperation Humboldt organizer Ruthi Engelke. “We are very excited that for the fourth year, we are able to offer a wide variety of workshops to the community that explore how we may create that society through the power of creativity and art.”

Donations are encouraged to help cover the costs of the conference but are not required.

Why would you want to dismantle an economic system that not only has lifted more people out of poverty than any other system implemented but also is built around voluntary exchange and self ownership of your labor?

Do you really want more government to control your lives?

Apparently obsessed Trump haters are finding it difficult to account for the same sort of misery that existed before Trump took office and exists after he left it . So they drag Trump into everything no matter how unrelated. It was sooooo much easier to spew hate for everything while he was in office. And spewing hare is the only goal they have.

I’m sure it will be Trump’s fault for all the world’s ills through, at least, 2024.

Only in America can someone wearing 150 $ shoes, holding a 1,000$ cell phone in their hand, with a roof over their head and food in the fridge that needs to be thrown away because it’s expired, complain about capitalism. I get complaining about corporatism. I heard a funny joke once, if all the people in America that threatened to leave if they didn’t get their way actually left, America would be a better place.

Good point Mike. How to walk the peaceful anti capitalist walk while living in a capitalist society. We all gotta eat. All the land has lords. Free O’Rush lived in old well kept RV named Big L and free camped on BLM land or other nooks she could find on public land or with caring land holders like my wife and I. She made art for sale and traded and gleaned her way through the world spreading wisdom and love, touching many hearts. She lived rugged and died young. I’m an anti capitalist because I want to live in a world where someone like Free could live long and prosper.

I wonder how many people actually make a living wage in the arts, as opposed to electricians, plumbers, truckers, teachers, doctors, etc.

As a hobby it seems fine as a living, well you wouldn’t need donations for food.

I’ve worked in graphics and printing for over 20 years. You can make a buck. But you have to be good and diversify your skills, such as you can’t just be a page designer. You gotta know all the software, the prepress, the actual printing, and wear many hats in the business. One or two skills just means you’ll be forever unemployed. Then you have to run your own agency, or like I did for a while work for a US Top 50 printing company (Consolidated graphics). Knowing how to paint and draw, no matter how good you are isn’t going to pay the bills, at least not until you get a big following and that takes a while. But it is definitely a hustle, and the art world is very transient and unstable.

Remember, Capitalism isn’t about capital, it’s all about power… Capital is everywhere!

Are these people Hippies, or are they Socialists…

Let’s give them Equity! Feed the homeless with Love and Light!

A vapid post! Totally full of Moonbeams and Pixie Dust… Get Susan Seaman to wave her Pollyanna Magic Wand… That will fix everything!

I am looking forward to participating and learning beyond merely viewing. Appreciate the focus on intersection of capitalism and ecological destruction in an artistic presentation
Mystified by all the negative posts here though ?
