Anarchist Group Introduces Themselves to Humboldt in Letter to the Editor

Humboldt Mutual Aid

If you went to a march recently, you may have seen Humboldt Mutual Aid’s big white tent. We’ve been at recent Black Lives Matter rallies and solidarity events offering our support to different groups and actions. We are the friendly folks handing out free food, hand sanitizer, masks, water, tea, art supplies, and information.

While we at Humboldt Mutual Aid are glad to be present at these rallies, we’ve been working locally for a few years now, and we get the feeling it is time to formally introduce ourselves to the public.

Humboldt Mutual Aid is an autonomous collective composed of scholars, artists, activists, and farmers working to build dual power in the community and prepare for natural and social disasters. We identify and gather resources to directly distribute to those in our community materially harmed by the structures of our society.

We also use humor and art to inspire others and mock oppressive authority.

I’m sorry, y’all are what now? We are a group of folks who cook and garden together. We hand out free food and provide educational materials to the public. We show up to protests and city council meetings. We have weekly decision meetings with agendas and voting. It’s all very thoughtful and organized. We are basically clowns armed with personal protective equipment, a commercial kitchen, and radical literature.

During the COVID-19 crisis, Humboldt Mutual Aid has provided 150+ free hot meals almost every week for the last few months. We have delivered groceries to folks keeping quarantine. We have picked up and delivered critical medication for some of our most vulnerable and isolated community members. When police evict folks (yes, during COVID!), we try to step in, reach into our pockets, and fund temporary shelter. Most of our ability to do this comes from community donations in the form of food and funds (wanna help? need aid?).

Before COVID, Humboldt Mutual Aid organized letter writing for incarcerated people, taught folks to make disaster-preparedness kits, organized educational reading groups, and last year we hosted our very first skillshare— a free 3-day event teaching folks everything from seed saving, to wound and fracture care, and the critical necessity of Indigenous cultural fire management practices.

How come I’ve never heard of you? In the past, we have tried to not make a very big deal about our work. We aren’t a 501(c)3: we are simply a group of folks with shared values trying to make a difference. We’re about solidarity, not charity. We care about feeding and sheltering folks– not marketing.

So, why come forward now? Well, there has been much talk of anarchists as of late. Donald Trump’s recent Executive Order lambasts “Marxists” and “anarchists” as “violent extremists” who “traveled across State lines to promote their violent agenda.”

Locally, our police also demonstrate a questionable amount of paranoia of their very own. In 2017, Sheriff William Honsal bemoaned the rise of “punk squads” composed of “youngsters 12 and 13 years old” who “all have cell phones.” This June, Honsal began (in)famously promoting a conspiracy theory, claiming “busloads of ANTIFA” were coming to Humboldt County. Honsal remains certain of this supposedly nefarious presence, certain he can sniff out ANTIFA, but didn’t quite say how he knows who is and is not a “member” of this non-organization. Steve Watson, Chief of EPD, stated similar beliefs of “anarchists” who he “suspect[ed] bused here,” while seeming to downplay police and other vehicles attempting to drive through crowds of protestors.

While funny as heck, these statements are also deeply concerning. By villainizing political thought, those in authority can begin to justify violent actions against perceived dissenters. These comments are a threat to the basic freedom of association. This language does the ideological groundwork of beginning to snip away our already meager rights, in a time when, across the nation, journalists and a ctivists are being brutalized by police.

“[W]e are peace Blessed are the peacekeepers,” Honsal would declare, less than 24 hours after his officers,

head to toe in riot gear, fired pepper bullets into a crowd of protestors marching against police brutality,* “for they shall be called the children of God.”

In the context of increasing militarized violence, misinformation, and authoritarianism, we feel now is the right time to make ourselves clear to our community: Humboldt Mutual Aid is an anarchist organization.

We are anti-capitalist. We are anti-racist. We are (gasp!) anti-fascist.

We are anarchists, and we move and work in solidarity with all those fighting and thriving in myriad ways against the violence of this white supremacist, settler-colonial, patriarchal, neoliberal empire– the so-called United States.

So, here we are, for the world to see. Your very own friendly neighborhood anarchists (no buses required!). We are scholars and clowns. We are artists and orators. We are students and farmers. We are medics, herbalists, and environmentalists. We are multi-racial. We are Queer. We are Indigenous, and we are settlers. We are witches and policy wonks. We are professionals, and we are punks. We are deeply embedded in this community, and we will cook, laugh, and speak into existence a world without capitalism, carcerality, and colonialism. One free meal at a time.

So, come and get us. We aren’t hard to find. We’re at your local protest handing out granola bars and legal info, and we are here for the long haul.

Socialism is evil, communism is evil, Antifa is evil, better get a history book. We teach these things to our freedom school kids, they know the truth. Stuber- since when is being Anti Fascist evil? If you think the folks above have ANYTHING to do with what is going on in Hong Kong, you are definitely mistaken. They published an open letter, they are easy to find, and have been more than helpful.

So, if you are watching, what is the threat that is supposed to imply?

Who is the “we” you are identifying with? At least the HMA folks are willing to let you know where to find them. Where can we find the “we” you are identifying with? And by what means are you intending to try to prevent these helpful folks “out”? (PS, they are already here, and they are adding positivity to our community)

Seattle, Portland, LA, All the destruction, hurting cops and innocent people. One kid they beat the shit out of for wearing a red hat. Said nothing on it, just a red hat. They have arrested hundreds now, for hurtling bricks, which can deadly. Pull your head out. They came to Eureka, smashed our cop cars, and hurt people. No fucking thanks. They took the place in Seattle, named it something stupid. They hurt the shop owners, stole from them, hurt them. Destroyed businesses that took a lifetime to build. Just like Nazi’s did, “The nights of broken glass”, these Antifa punks can’t spell fascism, they behave just like animals. We feel sorry for you, no education, no smarts. The people we should be promoting good Christian groups who are out on the front lines on the street, helping people, giving them another chance, feeding them, comforting them. We wonder who comforts all the people Antifa has hurt, whos’ businesses they destroyed? Are the violent Antifa’s going back in and help restore what they smashed? Nobody “came” to Eureka. That was local shit, at best.

I am a 100% proud anti fascist. If you think there is any sort of conspiracy (left, right, or center), you are being played.

To be clear- I am 100% opposed to violence, which to me is defined by doing physical harm to another human being. The fact that the right got suddenly up in arms once WHITE owned property (the business may have been owned by a POC, but I’ll wager who owns the real estate…), was even slightly threatened is telling. As far as anything that occurs between cops and protesters, the cops largely reap what they sow. Except that they have the power of the state behind them to justify any response they give.

Also- I’m pretty sure HMA is clearly stating that they are here already, and here to HELP the community. I’m willing to bet they may have even been on hand to clean up after the relatively minor damage seen in Eureka.

Try harder.

We just saw the news and the anarchist symbol is all over Portland, along with the destroyed businesses and damaged buildings, along with the violent deaths. You and your organization are violent and destructive, we see it on the news every day. We are watching. You lie about your lollypop and mask giveaways, but in reality, you are the enemy of freedom. You hurt people, and cause suffering. We teach our students in our freedom schools, all across America, the truth about you. Here is what we would do if we were in charge. We would drop a net over you, and gather you all up. Then, we take your credit cards, drivers licences, and cars, as well as your prints and photos of you, and doxx the shit out of you. Take all the money from your accounts, and if the bank cards are your parents, take them too, drain them of their money, sell your cars, and give the money back to the people you have so violently hurt in reparation for the damage and suffering you cause. The mayors of these cities should be arrested, drain their accounts, and use the money for reparations. We are watching your tactics and moves. We teach the students how to do this. Our students know that Antifa, Anarchists, KKK, and the Nazis are all the same. You want to impose your crap ideas on us, and we will not allow it, we have the resources to stop you.

Just an observation, we notice that the violence is from Antifa and Anarchist, the destructive behavior, the terror they propagate, the cost to those whose businesses they have destroyed. We notice there are no KKK or other such groups doing this. Those groups who say they are anti fascists, are behaving as such. The so called fascists KKK etc., are silent, and are not destroying businesses and homes and rioting and throwing bricks at law enforcement and hurting and killing innocent people during these times. Perhaps they are gathering intelligence and are planning things. Huffman, our congressman, said he does not want to allow federal law enforcement into our area. Well, does that mean he will not protect Garberville if these animals come here? He won’t protect the Blue room, he won’t protect Sentry market, he won’t protect Treats? Fuck him. You forgot to include the ultra rich Republicans. They are doing more to destroy this country. Only to be led by Trump who passes tax laws that only benefit the 1% rich. They own this country and they own you. The American Dream is DEAD! Already they set the conditions on health care. Pay all of our elected officials. And we stupidly vote for the likes of Trump who is fleecing our tax dollars flitting around the world playing golf, staying at luxurious places with his entire family and friends all on our tax dollars. And we get crumbling roads and bridges, underfunded useless education system, third world medical benefits and infrastructures. Our tax dollars are spent on useless wars padding the pockets of the huge military complex spending half of the annual budget on weapons. They own all of the companies that set prices for everything we buy. They own the banks, the stock market and 99.9% of all of the wealth. And the stupid rest of us get thrown some crumbs.

Anarchist just want no government, libertarians want as little government as possible. Some governing will always be necessary at some level for humans in a “society” or else the strong can simply take what you have. But what we have today is a system that is bloated and only interested in protecting special interests, and that is accomplished in part by pitting everyone on the lower rungs of society against each other by race, gender, demographic, anything they can really. And the mainstream media is, and has always been one of the main tools used. The whole country was outraged over the death of George Floyd, and look what the media turned it into, division instead of unity

Anti Capitalism? What do the members do for a living? Where do they get their donations? Capitalism may not be perfect, but it’s what gives all of them everything they have, including the right to believe the crap spewed in this letter.

Support for protest groups and activists? Does that mean they are pro blocking roads, pro riots, pro vandalism, pro destruction of property, pro injuring and killing, pro burning down towns, pro refusing to let police and medical personnel assist gunshot victims? All of this and more happened due to the unfortunate murder of a lifelong thug.

Please remember that the freedom guaranteed by our Constitution allows you to believe and act as you choose. It, however, is also supposed to guarantee those who believe and choose to act differently than you the same freedoms. Your group, along with most radical groups like BLM demand your rights are upheld, but have a “SCREW YOU” attitude to those who disagree. There it almost always an accusation of racism, which is seldom true, but has become the go to buzzword solely for the purpose of gaining attention to your cause.

You may be doing “good” things, but good for the wrong reason or good for the wrong cause is not necessarily good.

Anything that devalues the capital of your labor is a road to making you literally worthless. Whether it damages the usefulness of it like addiction, ignorance, personality disorder or is imposed from outside like competition with cheap labor, tax burdens, racism, regulations or foolish political theories. In fact the extreme example of such devaluation is slavery where you don’t own any part of your own labor. You’re right rover. There is something to young idealism that I respect though. I see it in my daughter and although these guys might not be thinking out there positions very far down the track (as you suggest) they have some good ideas and many of them are our future. They are more thoughtful and intelligent than the little right wing trump train kids I see around these days.

Trust and/or support these people if you wish. I would advise looking closely at any group before supporting it. Sometimes people aren’t who they claim to be. You probably would describe yourself as tolerant, but are you?

I think all extremists should be viewed with caution. Hate is hate, no matter what you call it.

The Democrat connection to the KKK is simply that it is a party of convenience- a convenient reservoir for matters of personal opposition. If the Party in power to conduct the anti-slavery policies of the Civil War was Republican, then becoming Democrat was required for all good anti slavery haters. The things people hate change according to the times but no matter what is most resented, large or small, the Democrat Party is there to make the most of it.

What is really disheartening is that the public is so bad at figuring out when they have it good and holding on to it against the pressure of political parties to create drama and fear to advance their agendas. Right now the disaffected think socialism is the cure for their unhappiness. This amalgamation of failures for various reasons seems determined to scuttle the boat for everyone else as the last thing they want to do is examine their own behavior for problems. Even if such failures are relatively small in numbers, they still make enough noise to spread disaffection widely. It’s just easier to condemn than fix. “We have met the enemy and he is us.”

California’s water laws are antiquated and ineffective. By california law all water in the state is the property of the state. Water rights just allow you access to the states water. What worked in 1885 is no longer viable and some change needs to be implemented.

I agree with your first and last sentences but to suggest the State controls the entirety of our water system does not tell the whole story. California has ceded much of the State’s water system to the private stewardship of Stewart and Lynda Resnick (of Pom Wonderful / Fiji water fame). Also, California has given—with negligible if any benefit to the citizenry—unfettered access to major sources of spring water to foreign corporations. E.g., Nestle’ has a monopoly on the springs which feed Southern California’s Lake Arrowhead.
