New Humboldt County Court Order Allows Judges and Those Addressing the Court Not to Wear a Mask
Yesterday, the Humboldt County Superior Court issued a new mask policy that allows judges and “individual addressing the Court” to not wear a mask.
While the Court acknowledged that the Humboldt County Public Health Officer has ordered that masks should be worn inside all public buildings, the Court’s new order stated, “However, the Administration of Justice requires clarity in court proceedings. A clear record cannot be obtained when a speaker is wearing a mask.”
The new order states that when not addressing the court, those in attendance should wear masks.
The order reiterated that the “courtrooms remain closed to the public and when courtrooms are open, the number of individuals inside the courtrooms will remain limited. Remote appearances are encouraged, and court proceedings will continue to be broadcast publicly.”

Do as I say, not as I do. Lawyers and clarity rarely appear in the same sentence anyway. I can see the defense now “But Officer, the plaintiff could not understand you when you shouted “Stop!” through you face mask.”

Personally, I can attest – legally, if necessary – that I have not uttered a single word behind my mask which was not understood by those spoken to, for the last two months.
In fact, I can say that if I had to address someone 100 yards from me, in public, without an enormous amount of environmental noise to drown me out – they would easily hear me.
That’s with all ambient noise present, including highway traffic and tweakers screaming to who-knows-what.
