No Additional Positive Tests on April 21

Public Health Lab reportPress release from Humboldt County COVID19 – Joint Information Center:

There were no additional positive cases of COVID-19 confirmed Tuesday. The total case count remains at 52 with 50 of those cases recovered.

Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Teresa Frankovich said this slow period affords community residents time to continue to get ready for the next phase. “With continued social distancing and mandatory facial covering, we can keep our community safe and prepare for what may lie ahead.”

The following information is based on the most recent data available for all confirmed cases:

  • Contact to a Known Case: 23
  • Travel-Acquired: 20
  • Community Transmission: 9
  • Under Investigation: 0

As of Friday, April 17, a total of 1,614 county residents have been tested since the outbreak began. Humboldt County’s testing rate of 1,137 per 100,000 residents exceeds the estimated state rate of 666 per 100,000 and the national rate of 1,075 per 100,000 people. The rate of confirmed cases in the county stands at 38 per 100,000 residents, with the state rate nearly double that at an estimated 72 cases per 100,000. The estimated U.S. rate is 209 confirmed cases per 100,000 people.

  • Approximately 83% of cases are located in or around Eureka, Arcata, McKinleyville and Fortuna
  • Males: 48%
  • Females: 52%
  • Mean age: 45

For the most recent COVID-19 information, visit cdc.gov or cdph.ca.gov. Local information is available at humboldtgov.org or during business hours by contacting [email protected] or calling 707-441-5000.

What do the numbers mean?

  • Total new confirmed cases—the number of test-confirmed positive cases since the previous report.
  • Total number of confirmed cases—the number of test-confirmed positive cases since the pandemic began, including people who have recovered from the illness.
  • Total number of hospitalizations—total number of people with confirmed cases of COVID who have been hospitalized since the pandemic began, including people who have been released.
  • Total number recovered—the number of confirmed cases who are no longer in isolation, meaning they have met Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) criteria for release, including absence of fever for at least three days without use of fever-reducing medicine, improvement in symptoms and have had seven days or more since onset of symptoms.
  • Total number of people tested by Public Health Laboratory—number of people whose sample was tested by the Humboldt County Public Health Laboratory.
  • Total number of people tested by all other sources—total number of tests performed by the CDC, the CDPH, LabCorp and Quest Diagnostics. Non-local labs have a slower turnaround time than our local lab.
  • Public Health Laboratory test capacity—the approximate number of testing kits that are complete and ready to be administered. This number is decreased by testing and increased as additional supplies are acquired.
  • Public Health Laboratory turnaround time—the estimated amount of time it takes per testing run. Each run can include up to 20 samples; multiple batches can be run each day.
  • Transmission data
    • travel-acquired—nationally, internationally or regionally
    • contact to known case—an individual found to have been in direct contact with someone who tested positive for the virus
    • community transmission—spread without travel or known contact to any other confirmed case
    • under investigation—confirmed case whose means of transmission has not yet been determined.
  • Regional data
    • Currently measured by percentage of confirmed cases living in a densely populated area.
    • Soon to be represented instead by region after minimum thresholds of positive cases per region have been reached.
  • Gender—the gender of individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19. Total cases, shown by percentage.
  • Mean age—the average age of all the individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19. Average age is calculated by adding all the ages of individuals together and dividing by the number of cases.
  • Test rates and confirmed case rates relative to the State of California—the number of tests performed per 100,000 people. Numbers of tests performed are provided by the Humboldt County Public Health Laboratory, LabCorp, Quest Diagnostics, CDPH and the CDC. Population estimates are based on data from the United States Census Bureau. Rates are calculated by dividing the total number of tests performed by the population of the jurisdiction.
  • Confirmed case rates relative to the State of California—the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people. Test results are provided by the Humboldt County Public Health Laboratory, LabCorp, Quest Diagnostics, CDPH and the CDC. Population estimates are based on data from the United States Census Bureau. Rates are calculated by dividing the total number of confirmed cases by the population of the jurisdiction.

Notes on patient and demographic data

To protect the identity of people with COVID-19, their specific location of residence will not be disclosed. The Humboldt County Public Health Branch is legally responsible for protecting personal health information, including residence address, specific age, recent travel, the identities and locations of any contacts, the provider of medical treatment, the course of illness and any other information that might identify an individual with or exposed to the virus unless it serves the interests of public health to do so.

Although we understand it is of interest to residents, providing location and demographic information to the general public does nothing to slow the spread of illness. Humboldt County is experiencing untraceable person-to-person transmission, also known as “community spread,” and there is no place that can be considered safe. To reduce your chances of acquiring or spreading COVID-19, avoid travel, wash your hands, keep yourself and your environment clean, follow the shelter-in-place order, and do not leave home for any reason unless it is absolutely necessary to do so.

The following case information is provided daily Monday through Saturday:

  • New positive cases
  • Total positive cases to date
  • Total hospitalizations to date
  • Total Public Health Lab tests to date
  • Total commercial lab tests to date
  • Public Health Lab test capacity, total and daily, and estimated turnaround time
  • Transmission data
    • travel-acquired
    • contact to known case
    • community transmission
    • under investigation

Additional information is updated each Friday:

  • Regional data
    • currently measured by percentage in densely populated area
    • soon to be represented instead by region after minimum thresholds of positive cases per region have been reached
  • Gender
  • Mean age
  • Test rates and positive test rates relative to the State of California.

Deaths, not cases. The highest number of new cases was on April 4. We appear to have a slight downward trend in numbers of new cases since the 10th.

According to the Johns Hopkins site we had 39,500 new cases today. If they’re wrong take it up with them OK. I don’t really give a shit.

Good goin Trump. The drug he said was a game changer and thousands have started to use has shown to have no benefits and has increased the death rate exponentially.

https://www.sfgate.com/business/article/Anti-malarial-drug-Trump-touted-is-linked-to-15216522.php

“More than 27% of patients treated with hydroxychloroquine died, and 22% of those treated with the combination therapy died, compared with an 11.4% death rate in those not treated with the drugs, the study said”.

I can still see him shutting down Fauci from answering whether or not hydroxychloroquine was safe at that press conference.

He hasn’t made America great again. He’s made it the laughingstock of the world again.

There have been studies that hydroxychloroquine is effective and studies that show it is not. China and South Korea labelled it as an effective treatment for covid-19. And France’s top researcher in the field – Professor Didier Raoult – recently released a study of 1061 covid-19 patients and concluded “The HCQ-AZ combination, when started immediately after diagnosis, is a safe and efficient treatment for COVID-19, with a mortality rate of 0.5%, in elderly patients. It avoids worsening and clears virus persistence and contagiosity in most cases.””

While Trumpls enthusiastic support for it was not advisable IMO nor was that unusual of his worst hyperbole tendencies, the idea that it is ineffective is not proven by one informal study by the VA and is equally unsubstantiated hyperbole. Nor is blaming Trump for every failure and lauding Fauci- that bureaucrat of an agency actually responsible for the testing failure- the least bit reasonable. The CDC has acted as fiefdom and been wrong for decades before Trump ever came along. This whole attitude of choosing to believe or not believe everything based on whether it is seen as bad or good for Trump makes fools of all.

It’s origin is from the asshole himself, he sold you TDS but lied about it’s meaning.

Dr. Frankenstein is so drunk with power all she can do is spew doom and gloom. This monster has no place dictating rules and regulation without fact or science. In this press release she admits she has no science to back her up as she states “for what MAY lie ahead”. If you’ve had enough of this dictatorship bombard your county supervisors with phone calls. This communist must be stopped! Your freedom has been hijacked, and only you “we the people” can take it back.

So, how many people are being tested, and how many test results are still being waited on?

How long will it be until we all get tested for the virus and whether we have antibodies, indicating that we *may have* developed even a small level of immunity?

Because until then, it’s not safe.

There’s a Japanese Destroyer out off the coast of Somalia hasn’t seen land in 6 months, no crew members have come or left the ship the only thing that has happened is its been resupplied by another ship that was American and now they have 6 cases of Covid-19 and found traces of the virus on a bleach bottle. ???

The only thing I could find about a Japanese ship was “In another MSDF mission, the destroyer Takanami with a crew of 200 has been in waters in the Middle East since late February, gathering intelligence to ensure safe passage of Japanese vessels.” http://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/13296702 But it had been making port calls in Djibouti which had a covid-19 outbreak.

OK Einstein, explain your plan if this is isn’t something you can wait out, like it is with the cold or flu? Just so the millions, maybe billions, that are going to die from the economic shutdown know what they are suffering for. That is if we don’t get WW3 which is almost guaranteed under such societal pain. Can you smart people do me sum math what the infection rate is in the nation? The death rate? How bouts both of those for the county because I am just too stupid to wrap my head around it, deerp.

What I can wrap my head around is a 5-10% death rate from the coming hyperinflation, a loss of 95% of total net worth and a 90% death rate from global thermonuclear war if it goes that way which looks likely. Actually, I am not that dumb, the current death rate for the US is 0.014% and will doubtfully get to even 0.05% and HumCo is at a staggering 0% death rate with multiple businesses permanently destroyed. On that math the economic shutdown will be 100x more deadly than the virus in my rosiest scenario. Morons.

Wear a mask, open the economy and give me Frankovich’s salary from saving you from this idiot that is just now mandating masks. That is the only order she should have been allowed to give and the stupid BOS needs to answer to all those people they have destroyed!

I’m still not sure what “testing everybody” will accomplish. The only thing it may prove is the the virus is less lethal than currently hyped (we know that already though).

If you test positive for antibodies it means that you were exposed and it wasn’t a big deal.

instead of herd immunity, we have herd mentality.

Sounds like Raynaud’s syndrome, which has been associated with auto-immune issues because it is triggered by stress, as well as by cold–immediate cause is lack of oxygen in the blood to the affected extremities. Funny that’s not mentioned in any of the four articles i just found by googling. Oh you wanted a link… here’s one: https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/coronavirus/covid-toes-mysterious-skin-condition-could-be-linked-to-coronavirus-derms-say/2259631/

Doesn’t seem that odd in a disease known to cause loss of oxygen in the blood, and people turning blue. Difference is these blue toes in kids are a first symptom, or the only one–not a later phenomenon.

You either have antibodies, or you don’t! There is a test for the PRESENCE of antibodies, but not one for the TITER, or amount of antibodies.

When you get exposed, the virus becomes active, and in 7-14 days, you may develop symptoms, or not. Similarly, once exposed, as the virus replicates, you will start to make antibodies! It takes several days to have detectable amounts, thresh-hold amounts, adequate to show a positive test.

The antibody test is said to be around 87% accurate, but we have to take into account the number of days since the original exposure!

The PCR test measures actual virus present in a sample. The sample quality itself can vary considerably, and affect the results! Usually, in a PCR, if the virus is present, the test will show it.

All tests are useful, but right now, we need antibody testing of many people, so that we can gauge how widespread the virus has actually gotten, and figure out how may people have been exposed, and have become immune.

Once we have better data, we can all learn what the appropriate next step will be.

All this science may not be your métier, but, we are all just learning here!

Try to put away your irrational fears, and, it’s OK to isolate, if you want to! Wear your masks, it won’t hurt you any, but, as we learn about the virus’s behavior in our population, it may be better to just go back to normal.

Contact the Governor’s office, insist that antibody testing be more available, canvas Dr Frankovich and ask that extra staff be hired to obtain samples, and run the antibody test. We all need the peace of mind, and the government needs to provide the actual services that are desired by the general population.

Remember, there is no vaccine, and there won’t be one soon! Even if a working vaccine becomes available, it will be some time before it is produced in large enough quantities for all patients, and it may first only be given to high-risk patients, the obese, the aged, those with diabetes, hypertension,
COPD, etc.

The vaccine is a long shot, and the idea of “herd immunity” means that immunity will come to most, through exposure.

Don’t let the government scare you with the products of irrational fear! Most people will not die, and many will not even develop symptoms.

Find a happy medium between information and governmental blather. Stress is as harmful as many viral illnesses. Remember that viruses are everywhere, and that all animals will reliably develop immunity to foreign antigens, like viruses.
