Experience the Heart of Ukraine with International Folk Sensation Yagódy This Thursday

This is a press release from the Arcata Playhouse:

In a time when Ukraine’s people continue to defend their land, language, traditions, and cultural identity, every opportunity to celebrate Ukrainian art becomes an act of solidarity.

Internationally acclaimed folk band Yagódy brings that spirit to the Arcata Playhouse stage on Thursday, July 16, with a live performance rooted in centuries-old Ukrainian folk traditions and infused with powerful contemporary energy. The music is built on pure emotion, and linguistic barriers simply melt away, whether the band is reinterpreting a generations-old folk tune or emotionally honoring those defending Ukraine.

Their original song “Tsunamia” earned them fifth place out of 37 entries as they represented Ukraine in the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest, a breakthrough moment that brought their singular sound to a global audience of millions. Their music celebrates the resilience, joy, humor, heartbreak, and enduring spirit of a people whose traditions have survived across generations.

“Their latest single, out this spring, translates to “Do Not Break the Viburnum.” It is a reference to the shrub with red berries and a symbol of Ukrainian heritage. The lyrics focus on those waiting at home during the war with Russia, while those they love are on the battlefield. As the war in Ukraine continues, preserving and reshaping these songs has taken on new urgency.” – The World

Supporting Ukrainian artists helps ensure these stories, songs, and traditions continue to thrive. It is a celebration of a culture that refuses to be silenced. The show begins at 8:00 p.m. with doors open at 7:30. The Arcata Playhouse has a full bar with specialty drinks, popcorn, and fresh baked chocolate cookies. Tickets are $25 general admission, available at PlayhouseArts.org.
