[UPDATE 3:15 p.m.: Lt. Calls the Situation Attempted Murder] Reported Shootout Early on Halloween Between Thieves and a Security Guard at a Permitted Grow

marijuana 1 featureFirst, we need to state that we are putting together bits and pieces of this story with very little official confirmation.

Please read carefully and know that this is a situation that has not been clarified. And as information comes in, our understanding of what happened may change.

But, here’s what we have learned and where we got the information so you can make your best judgement on what to believe.

Early Halloween morning, about 12:45 a.m., emergency dispatch received a call reporting that shots had been fired about 21 miles up Bald Hills Road which is west of Willow Creek and north of Hwy 299. The dispatcher said the caller reported that someone was dead. (We have since learned that is unlikely.)

A scratchy transmission of the beginning of the dispatch can be heard below. (Note: 1144 means deceased.)

The dispatcher later relayed to officers that the reporting person said the incident occurred about 12:15 a.m. She also stated that the reporting person said that there was a fire and a security guard’s trailer is “fully engulfed.” She tells the officer that this is reportedly a 211 (a robbery.)

By late yesterday morning, we received several reports about the incident which locals say occurred in the Three Creeks area.

We have reached out repeatedly to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office for answers but whether because they are extremely shorthanded (they are) or for other reasons, we have not been able to gather much information.

Lt. Sam Williams of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, on his day off, informed us by email, “I don’t know a lot yet…I’m off.  But I know there was no fatalities.”

Other than that we’ve had nothing official. We have attempted to reach out to the cannabis security company we believe was there, the permitted grower who was the victim, law enforcement, and fire resources who were called to the scene without getting any responses other than the one above.

So the rest in blue type is second hand information and should be treated VERY cautiously.

According to several readers, drones were seen over the permitted grow in eastern Humboldt the night before Halloween. One person said he heard there were three drones.

The grower hired security.

A large number of thieves (as many as 12 by one account) arrived at the property early Halloween morning. They threw a incendiary device into the camper/trailer of the security guard. The structure burned as did the security guard’s vehicle. There was an exchange of gunfire. One person, allegedly a thief, was injured seriously before the thieves fled.

There is a great deal more to the story, involving multiple other less documented reports of robberies over the last months that seems similar to the one here. But we want to stick as closely as we can to what was documented in the scanner call.

Growers tell us there are meetings today in Hoopa and another in Willow Creek on Monday with Sheriff Billy Honsal. However, we were told that the first involved Hoopa Tribal Police and a Lieutenant at Hoopa Tribal Police denied that his department was attending any such meeting.

As we said, none of this has been confirmed officially.

However, one permitted grower in the area told us he spent last night awake, alert for any activity especially after his security guard told him a drone flew low over the grower’s home late last night while he was out patrolling. He said this is the most stressed he has been in his life of growing cannabis. “I’d rather go back to the days of helicopters,” he told us. “At least there was basic rules…It is worse now than it ever was before.”

UPDATE 3:22 p.m.: The thieves could be charged with attempted murder, Lt. Greg Musson of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office told us. About 12:15 a.m., “three to four subjects came on the property demanded to know where the money and marijuana was.” The men appeared to be in their 30’s or 40’s and were wearing “hoods”, he said.

The security guard for the property was in a 5th wheel on the property. According to Musson, “The crooks told the [person] in the trailer, either come out or we’ll burn you out.”

There was an exchange of gunfire, he told us.

Because the officers in charge hadn’t written up the report, he didn’t know how but the group of thieves set the 5th-wheeler on fire.

The security guard came out of the trailer. (The trailer and a rental car near the trailer burned up, Musson said.) The crooks zip-tied the security guard up and left him bound in a Conex box.

After this, for unknown reasons, the suspects left the property without taking any vehicles, money, or marijuana. “They didn’t know why the suspects fled, but they got away with nothing,” he told us.

“Nobody was shot that we know,” he said. “All the good guys and gals were accounted for. We don’t know if any bad guys were hurt.”

Musson said as far as he knew, no drones were involved in the situation.

But, he noted, “This is the second time this has occurred to the same place within a matter of weeks. This is getting out of hand…Somebody’s going to get dead whether the crooks or the good guys.”

The Sheriff’s Department is short-handed, he said. “We have the money to hire people, but no one wants the job,” he told us. “Its an industry wide problem in the US and in Canada.”

farmer ,you define what we call a key board keyboard gangsta A.k.a . … a “spit boxer” , how’s that permit working out for the community ? Not well. Tell the permitted farmers to quit dry snitching out their neighbors . Yeah permits are turncoats . Just like a dry snitch . They paid money(permit $) to help the law enforce shut down non permitted locals who have been here for generations . So you tell me who the turn coats are . And yet permitted farmers are the ones setting up fake home invasions . And selling their product on black markets. Remember how you even got a chance to get “permitted “ was by the black market sales
Bet your permitted sales haven’t brought you any $ and all your inventory is sold black market .

Stop bitching here keyboard warrior and crying a river about nonexistent snitching. You made your choice to be outlaw without a permit, that’s your grown ass choice, so you better go get a job flipping burgers, because being a drain on society not contributing your fair share isn’t available anymore. Pure ignorance… I’m a permitted farm by choice, with lots of friends and family on the traditional market still. That was a very broad blanket statement you made I’m sure out of frustration. Adaptation is a necessity in this new era, snitching is not. It’s a bumpy ride for everyone on all sides. The corporate game plan is to divide and conquer. Views such as yours show that it’s working . Only way through this is unity

The constitution is not the only thing people weigh in their decision making. It’s not an end all document that instructs you on how to navigate life. If you use federal reserve bank notes you obviously aren’t the purist that you envision yourself as. It’s massively hypocritical to sit at your keyboard and act as if your shit don’t stink while you incite violence against permitted farmers. Oh high and mighty cenhum.

I doubt anyone would used FRNs if something else of value was made available to the commoners. BTW, i do have on public record my stance on this.

Fkkin unreal.. Seriously, these permit patties troll around like their statements don’t stink. Well.. they do..

Unity doesn’t mean NOT calling the permits what they are.. corporate, unconstitutional, fear.inc garbage. Not one of the permitees can fess up to the reality that their funds irradiate many of their well meaning neighbors. All I have ever heard from any of them, is excuses why that is acceptable, and deferment of the issue.

I can admit there are issues with the Original Market. I can name them and own them, and think of ways which may make things better for everyone.
You all may have made “The choice” to blow up the “woods” with your all’s extra loud usually to large of scenes, and been able to pay the county to turn their Heads enough to ignore your environmental degradation..
But for many smaller farmers.. who really have minimal impacts..It was never a choice on the table. Not really, and that is what stinks about all this bullmanure.. you all say it’s a choice, not really, there really isn’t a plausible path forward for many small farmers. And that’s the reality. That’s what stinks. Abating people for less that 1000 ft. That’s bull. Handcuffing elders in their yards over the smallest of scenes is bull. $10,000 for 1 plant too many is an atrocity.. It’s overkill at its finest.

But yeah, let’s just pretend that it’s “All good bro” when it’s not. That helps.. Sure it does..

Such a “community “ oriented response Not suprised.. All your statements reflect is a bunch of useless Ad Hominem Spew because that’s all you got. But, I didn’t make this bed, A LAW I didn’t make has chosen to seal our fate. Regardless of what the true facts may be.. I ain’t cryin.. I am ANGRY! Who cares.. WE DO, and we are Watching! This isn’t just about “My job” it’s about upholding the constitution, misapplied and overstep of the law.. or maybe your just sooo gready, and eager to throw all your rights away for a quick profit.. Obviously… YOURS decided it was totally fine to through away hard ass wins by the old timers for your greed and quick cash, and that is LOUSY.. just like your fragile attitude..

And no, it wasn’t because I bought a “new grow dozer” or vacationed lavishly.. those are ridiculous assumptions.. but of course I would expect such blanket assumptions from such a Lousy attitude.. Unreal! But yeah, you and yours are SOO smart to hand over your entire life savings to the County Cartel for an industry on the brink of tanking.. REAL SMART.. or how about not! But I hope you enjoy being extorted some more.. Have fun with that!

Sounds like the ones who say @“cry a river “ are the same ones who went on tv back in 2009-16 on all the emerald triangle documentaries on CNBC, 60 minutes , nat geo shows, Netflix , etc …. giving up our tri counties for all the world to see , and then cry about getting jacked , and then cry about prices and etc , because all the out of staters moved out here after seeing tv and dumb locals wanting to be on tv , and prices went down cause everyone grows now or is in the industry now days . And there goes the GDP days 5- 5,500 a unit . But yet your the dumb ones who permit , and go on tv and want to be seen . Out of site out of mind . You all want this pipe dream of legal permit crap . When I fact your gonna lose too . Black market is still keeping this county alive not permitted farms that fund local eradication of local and 2nd generation families . I have never had anything cut down in my years . But it’s more worth it as a broker instead from my eyes now days .

Another thought ….maybe our local tears could save the river …. yeah good job prop 64 voters or whatever permit passing prop it was . I rather be a broker anyway now days . No strings attached to any project , leave anytime . No stress of outside elements or depending on others to do their “jobs “

How ignorant can you be calling growers scumbags? These are people following the rules to make a living growing a legal plant. Good people at that. And some of the hardest working, least rewarded people out there. These are people who volunteer their time to help the community, people who are working together to make sure ignorant, bigoted people like you see that they aren’t the bad guys in this. They grow a plant. A plant that is medicine for many people. Why don’t you educate yourself and go meet some of these so called “scumbag” growers, they have meetings all throughout the county all the time and they are open to the public. You’d surely change your tune if you cared to spend half of the time you spend on this comment section, instead getting to know some of the people (the same ones you call scumbags) who are fighting for this community and helping it get better and stronger. The people involved in this are some of the best people out there who will go to bat for their friends and neighbors- their community. Get to know them and then make a decision instead of blanketing them all under your delusional, completely misguided and super low name calling. Damn Dude you just don’t have a clue. It’s not that hard. You don’t need to be rich. In fact, I know quite a few poor people who, partly BECAUSE they want to save money, grow herbs such as parsley and chives, greens such as kale and chard, and fun stuff such as weed in portable pots. If everyone were growing their own, the incentive for theft would go way down. You can grow them in a living room window. Optional: You can spend less than $100 for some fluorescent tubes and give them a little boost. You don’t necessarily need 3-pound plants; grow what you will use and a little extra for friends. You could also get creative and do this legally several times a year, since it’s 6 plants at a time, not in any given time frame, that’s allowed. “Allowed”: though with such small amounts, it would hardly matter anyway. Nobody’s going to rip you off or turn you in for 6 little potted plants at a time.
I totally agree with LevelheadedGenXer. Why get involved in this BS at all; the law and the money mess everything up. Just put the plant in the soil, tend it a few months, cut off the buds, trim and dry, and voila–pride of your own sweet plant about to make you as high as you dreamed!

Evidently the HCSO isn’t short handed enough to have staffed convoy after convoy. I’m guessing there’s no money in providing basic law enforcement.

Same place as before?!! Same place that got ripped off 2 years ago too? I wouldn’t take that security job!! This sounds like a cursed grow that is demanding lots of limited resources from the sheriff. Maybe just rescind their permit…they do it to bars and liquor stores that cannot maintain control. Maybe at least suspend their license and hold a hearing? What is the procedure for problem grows like this? Sounds like Cannabis Control Board needs to step up!

Seriously? You are really blaming the victim here. Wow. Why not ask the County to stop publishing the addresses of legal farms after denying farmers the right to carry firearms for protection? Why do legal farms have to give up 2nd amendment rights? Why is a liquor store owner allowed to protect themselves with a firearm, but not a legal pot farmer who pays WAY more in taxes than the store owner AND is required to pay even more to hire security guards?

Because permitted growers are idiots. They know their address will be publicly available. They know they can’t have any guns. They know they are paying fees that are used to eradicate their unpermitted neighbors. Many- like these- know that they are growing lots of high-value weed far away from any possible help from the sheriff. Yet they insist on having very easily neutralized security systems- if any at all and then they insist on being seen as “victims”! Then they demand protection from their cop friends!! Ha Ha Ha. Pathetic and yes – their licenses should definitely be rescinded because we don’t need people who are insistently stupid causing these dramas. Thieves exist and they always will. Yes they suck… but so do growers who are so stupid that they attract them and create drama and then want more than their fair share of the sheriff’s resources. There- I said it out loud…We had a strong code at one time before the greenrushing fools came in- “Take care of your own shit. Don’t expect others to take care of your shit for you.” These people are not “victims”- they set up the situation.

This happened on French camp to me. This was the same farm that you wrote about the shots fired article on 10/11 they put the workers in the container and demanded the owners come out of the trailer and then set it on fire. The Omni security guard engaged them in a fire fight and saved the lives of everyone who worked at the farm and defended off the cannabis. You really need to get you facts straight. First off , good work fighting them off!
I have had many many things stolen up there, nothing as dramatic as what you’ve been through. And yes the HCSO know the names, from the robbery two years ago. One was arrested a few months ago on weapons charges and Kym even published the names after she was shown proof from the police. I believe it’s the same crew. I even know the property of one of them, it’s on pine creek road. That is their getaway.
I propose next year you me and the third neighbor up there hire joint security. One or two at each property with radios and some late night patrolling on the road. Each with ARs, I also believe there is a way they could each have 30 round mags, legally. Especially if our sheriff is truly “constitutional.”
I hope the thieves read this.

No way should the Sheriffs department be your citizen paid employees for your private profit making business! That’s ludicrous.
Hire your own soldier of fortune security and pay for it out of your pocket. Police are not to prevent, they only respond AFTER a crime event has occurred.

I Think the basic question and job of the Sheriff is to actually put all the pieces together and arrest the criminals/gang with evidence to forward to the DA for attempted murder. They had time to run convoys and shakedowns on AP road today. But not time to solve an attempted murder. This seems to be the norm for the Sheriffs and the thieves are getting more and more emboldened. these are not limited to pot grows. Home invasions and robberies are occurring with an increasing exponential rate to ALL residents of Humboldt County. EVERYONE KNOWS THIS. In town or out, the sheriffs do not solve these crimes. Sheriff Allman in Mendocino has done a good job of solving these crimes and letting the public know. Honsal and Humboldt seem to be responding, like the green rush, by pretending its not happening.

Tsk Tsk. You can’t run effective operational security with one person. Extra people are a force multiplier if they know how to work together.

The Raiders know how to work together (in a limited scope)… and will take out any one security guard.

Hello did you not take civics class? You show up on a permitted farm (private property) with guns with intent to rob you may get shot by security. Trying robbing the bank or someone’s home and bullets will fly too. It’s called a natural right to self defense enshrined within the Constitution.

To me this sounds like the same crew who has been robbing other farms attempted to rob this new farm. When they got there, they were able to overwhelm the first security guard. However, this is Humboldt and hill folk don’t play. The crew then came head to head with another armed guard who, exchanged gunfire. Most likely killing one of the attackers. The Thieves retreated in shock taking with them there now bleeding to death and soon to die friend. Off they went. When the sheriff showed up they said, oh gee. Damn. This was the same crew we couldn’t catch yet. Meanwhile, its gonna take another Alderpoint 8 to put a stop to this shit. Humboldt County sheriff will not be there for you, and they cannot protect you or your harvest. As far as i can see Its totally OK to waste home invasion robbers at legal pot farms. Let it be known, pot farmers don’t care about invaders life. We have a constitutional sheriff and he has informed legal farmers to protect there farms.

The county and the license holder are equal to blame. The grower was too involved/invested to pull up the stakes and move elsewhere and the county was too greedy and just wanted the money. My guess is both parties knew it was not the best choice to operate a legal cannabis grow in that area. Back to the drawing board you two, figure out how to move your grow to a spot that makes more sense.

I want the Emerald Triangle sheriff’s to work together.

The TCSO has lots of partial DNA from people involved in Canna robberies. From recent to at least 2 years ago regarding one of my neighbors.

I’m sure the HCSO and Mendo have DNA from these scenes too.

They likely cross reference into a database of prior convicteds, but they should be creating a new database in the Triangle just for these robberies.

Not every criminal has been charged yet! And these are very specific crimes that has rarely seen the criminals get busted.

Cross reference the robberies DNA throughout the Emerald so that we can build a database of these robbers DNA.

When the group is caught, charge them for their prior crimes regarding canna robberies that DNA has linked them too.

More than likely every robbery is not a new group.

And it’s likely that old groups have been emboldened by the lack of police action.

It would be wonderful to see these people see justice, and have peace of mind in knowing that some shitheads lack of skills finally caught up with them.

A victim is an innocent person who had some terrible tragedy randomly choose them. Cancer victim, car accident victim, war victim (for a civilian), famine victim, rape victim…these are actual victims who deserve our compassion and help. Somebody growing weed for big bucks who can’t foresee that thieves really exist and will really steal your stuff- like they have been doing forever? That is not a victim. That’s somebody who chose to enter a certain circumstance and wants to ignore some of the unpleasant parameters; when they cry for help they are “playing the victim” but really they insult true victims and bend our language and perceptions towards believing that everybody is a victim. That’s not helpful or honest. Of course- nobody DESERVES to get ripped off. I’m glad nobody not stealing got killed- this time.

Sociopaths exist on both sides of the argument. Lack of conscience, lack of empathy, greed. That’s a close and short description of a sociopath. Oh yeah, rationalization of their incursion into these characteristics is another description. Humboldt has more than it’s fair share regardless of what side of the argument that’s stood on.

To those complaining about this grower crying that he’s been fouled: you need to reread Mart’s comments. Sounds to me that he is rejoicing in the fact that he has a hired guard with balls enough to fire at the thieves, who by the way, didn’t get what they came for. Northern Humboldt doesn’t have a bunch of wussies growing out in the woods.

If it was arson .
Gasoline can be traced to where it was bought.
If it was a huge rental van involved in a bank robbery .
Thieves would be arrested within hours
The technology exists to solve these crimes.
There just needs to be motivation by law enforcement.
The fact that the Ryder truck robbery hasn’t been solved.
Clearly says allot

If you’re saying this can be done through chemical fingerprint, then no.

It can only be traced circumstantially – if they have a suspect and surveillance video at a gas station shows the suspect filling a gas can found at the site of the arson for instance.
