Wine and Jazz Music at Morris Graves Museum June 21st
This is a press release from the Humboldt Arts Council:
Join the Humboldt Arts Council in the Morris Graves Museum of Art for Wine & Jazz, our monthly 3rd Sunday musical event. This month on June 21st, our musical guest will be Gilandia, a local jazz improvisation favorite.
Gilandia consists of Andy Barnett and Gil Cline, with Barnett on multiple instruments and Cline on flugelhorn and various natural horns. Barnett and Cline inhabit a world of improvised music where they create musical flights of fancy on the spot, without any printed music or extensive planning. They also include some of their favorite instruments (sea shells, slide trumpet, Moroccan Zurna, tuba) in their performances.
In addition to being accomplished musicians, Barnett is the author of “Compose Yourself! Awakening to the Rhythms of Life” (which will be available at the event), and Cline – trumpet professor emeritus at Cal Poly Humboldt – continues to pursue his decades-long research and performance on the valveless, natural trumpets of the Baroque era.
When asked to describe their music, Barnett says that “Gilandia is a unique creative ecosphere, illustrating how music is inseparable from nature and our daily lives. We celebrate our mutual love for the spark of creativity flashing between us in real time. We improvise, but are not bound by any convention of jazz. Our goal is not to feature our prowess as soloists, but to show audiences clear renditions of mutually crafted spontaneous compositions”.
So join us on Sunday, June 21st at 3:00 for fine wine and spellbinding music. What a wonderful way to celebrate the summer solstice!
