[UPDATE 9/14] HSU Instructor’s Hang Glider Stolen from Eureka

From a reader:

BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR A STOLEN HANG GLIDER.

Wills Wing Eagle 180

In the early morning May 25, A hang glider was stolen from a car parked in front of a residence in the vicinity of F and Humboldt St. In Eureka. The tie down straps were cut, and glider removed from the car racks and taken away.

The glider belongs to a Local Artist and Art instructor at Humboldt State University, and was to be transported to the repair facility by a veteran pilot, who acts as an observer for continuing education of intermediate pilots. Please Help us return this glider.

Any information is greatly appreciated.  There is a small reward for the safe return.

*DANGER*,  this hang glider is in need of structural repairs. The hang glider was to be transported to the Bay Area, on Saturday, to a special facility that repairs this type of aircraft. “DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FLY THIS GLIDER”.

It is important that anyone who has information or knowledge please contact the Eureka Police Dept.

.The case # is19003473

Hang gliding is a sport with elevated risks and people who want to fly are strongly encouraged to seek the instruction of a certified instructor, before attempting flight.

People who take or obtain equipment,  aren’t often aware of responsibility or the inherent dangers for operating these types of gliders/aircraft safely.  We do not want to see anyone get hurt attempting to fly or sell any glider or aircraft that is not safe to fly.

The local flying community is [comprised] of men and women, who are a well trained and highly regulated group of pilots under the United States Hanggliding and Paragliding Association, (USHPA) https://www.ushpa.org

We encourage anyone who would like to know and enjoy free flight to contact your local flight school and instructor, and support your local flying community by seeking professional instruction.

We are tirelessly working hard to maintain and grow our local and national flying communities.  We are honored to introduce new people to our ranks all across America, with a curriculum that ensures safety in making better decisions.

There is a beautiful world out there explore,  so lets do with friends and family, let’s be safe, and help us bring this glider home.

And just like that we now have a tweaker Air Force in eureka. I hope that thing doesn’t have enough lift to fly with a bmx bike tied to it as well, they’ll be completely unstoppable. We’ll all fall like planet of the apes.

Oliver, paragraph 7, “comprised of” not compromised.
Also, the mean part of me would like the miscreant fly it.

in fact, “comprised of” is always wrong. so the original used the wrong word in the wrong construction. there’s a bad comma in there, too.

an editor might suggest:

– The men and women of the local flying community comprise well trained and highly regulated pilots –

instead of:
The local flying community is [comprised] of men and women, who are a well trained and highly regulated group of pilots…

anyway, it’s not the flying grammar pedants, and he got it back, so good day.

Hey Dan.

Not to make light of poor preflight checklist.

It happens.

Eldon, you sure are a violent sort, aren’t you? The community is still waiting on your apology for threatening the life of Congressman Jared Huffman in your insanely unbalanced letter to the editor in the Times-Standard on May 25.

Are you going to be a man, Eldon, and apologize? Or are you a coward?

Sold! For a 20$ sack of meth so they can go steal more stuff. Drug addicts are thieves. Thieves are drug addicts. When will people figure this out. Then you have the bunch of ladies handing out free needles and Narcan to continue this behavior. Thanks.

check out Switzerland, and the UK’s approach. prescribe the heroin, help the addict stabilize their lives, and you better results than punitive approaches like prison. the crime factor is removed. its been satisfactorily demonstrated that most addicts have experienced neglect as children, and when you are “bad” your only society becomes fellow addicts. get a job, and a home, and free easy heroin, it’s actually easier to quit, and there is less harm, and cost to society.

It has no value. All pawns shops know and police know. Worst fear is it’s scrapped for aluminum but that would be hard to do, you have to take it apart and or cut it and it’s not worth much. It’s only worth money to another person who knows how to fly it. They would also need to fix it it’s a death trap. So lame
There’s a reward!

Thanks for trying to return some objectivity and rationality to the discussion.
I will ask inform my daughter in law. She is a local. Likely stolen by local meth addicts. Locals might have ideas about it. Should post this warning to local outlets.

Good to see friends in high places looking for a needle in a haystack!

Lets get this glider back with skilled hands so it can be properly repaired and returned to its owner.

No questions asked. Just drop off and ask for your reward. Ring the front doorbell.

They made a mistake with this one. There is no value with this glider as is. You can only do more damage with this one.

Every Pilot, Every instructor, and Every school on the west coast will be notified with the gliders serial number.

Let’s restore our faith in humanity and bring this one back.

Problem with this article nobody that I can see anyway mentions where to bring the glider back to .it says ring the doorbell and bring it back with you and get a reward. There are alot of doorbells in eureka .and nobody in there right mind is going to walk stolen merchandise into EPD they’ll shoot ya just cause they can .

I think it was specifically targeted at the individuals who “borrowed” it, or those who might be troubled with having to store it.

People do dumb things late at night. We get that. We all would like to move forward with our lives.

Hence to bring it back where they found it. Hopefully sooner than later.

Of course, we could meet at Walmart!
Thank you

Too lazy to shoot.
We were talking to an EPD ‘officer’ after three days of us calling, one finally showed up to hear our stolen car report.
While we were standing there with this ‘officer’ the fkg shitbirds that stole it from the old man drove by us…three times!!!!
The ‘officer’ said he could not initiate a..(I am not making any of this up!) a ‘high risk traffic stop’ because we said it was stolen.’
Three times they drove by!

Oh you’ll see someone attempting to fly it, in Walmart parking lot running in circles on the ground making airplane noises. Then they’ll give up and make a tent out of it

Judging from the photo this aircraft was a little out of its class.

Best case scenario, the thieves try to fly it – preferably from a very high place. The world will be a better place with them not in it.
