[UPDATE 6:55 p.m.] Fire Near Benbow

Just before 4 p.m., Cal Fire dispatched aircraft and firefighers to a fire on the east side of Hwy 101 in the Benbow area.  According to the person who provided us with the photo above. The fire is near Red Rock Road below the Rockpit.

UPDATE 4:12 p.m.: One of the Cal Fire planes has been released which is usually a good sign that firefighters believe they will get this under control quickly.

UPDATE 4:21 p.m.: Photo provided by local resident, Britney Harrison, shows the smoke getting black again.

UPDATE 4:44 p.m.: According to Salmon Creek VFD Chief Dan Gribi who is not working on the fire but just happened to be in the area when the tone went out, “There’s a small structure on fire now that they’re doing multiple helicopter drops on… Taking water out of the river just upstream from where people are swimming.”

UPDATE 4:58 p.m.: Both Copter 102 and a Cal Fire aircraft are leaving the scene.

UPDATE 6:55 p.m.:  According to Cal Fire’s Battalion Chief Isaac Lake, the fire is contained at .2 of an acre and one outbuilding, 10 x 20′, was destroyed. The cause is under investigation.

Redway VFD, Garbberville VFD, Miranda VFD, Cal Fire, and one firefighter handcrew as well as one copter and one tanker were at the fire.

Any word on why it’s smoky in southwestern humboldt? It looks like too much smoke to be from this little fire near benbow. Thanks

Any word on wildfire in Humbug Creek, Badger Mountain area (Siskiyou County)? Can’t find anything on the web but there are a lot of aircraft up there. Thanks for everything you do.

Kym – PIO Issac Lake reported to Tanya Horlick of KMUD – the fire is now contained at two tenths of an acre. Units from Redway, Garberville, and Miranda Fire personnel responded with the support of 3 Calfire engines, 1 firefighter hand crew, 1 copter and 1 tanker – reported at 6:30 pm Jul. 17 2020

It’s that time folks! We must be diligent for each other!! Use your brain! Do not flick not ashes or butts from whatever you smoke! Check to make sure that your vehicle is not dragging anything! Do not drive in or near dry grass! Please!!!
Thank the Gods and Great Spirits for our brave firefighters and first responders who to do much more than just fight fires!
Time to send in a generous donation to our Volunteer Fire Departments. Especially this year because they cannot have their regular fundraisers due to covid.

I was thinking the same thing, but for folks in Benbow to support Garberville fire. Any donations will help; they come to our rescue even though we’re out of their responsibility area.
