K’ima:w Medical Center in Hoopa Valley Had Its First Positive Test for COVID-19 Yesterday
Information from the Hoopa Valley Tribe OES Coordinator Amos Pole:
The Hoopa Valley Tribal Office of Emergency Services was notified [yesterday] afternoon that a patient from K’ima:w Medical Center has tested positive for the novel coronavirus (“COVID-19”).
We have been informed that this patient is currently in isolation and is in good health.
K’ima:w Medical Center will remain in contact (by telephone) with this patient to ensure that the patient continues to receive all the necessary services to stay in isolation. K’ima:w Medical Center and Humboldt County Public Health Department are currently working together to conduct contact tracing. No further information on the identity of this patient has been released.
The Hoopa Valley Tribe, the COVID-19 Response Team, and I have been preparing for this for many weeks. We have been meeting daily to discuss supplies, logistics, emergency management processes and protocols, and other necessary measures to ensure that the health, safety, and general welfare of the Tribe, Tribal members, and the Reservation community is protected.
I urge you to help us reduce the number of people with serious illness by doing your part. Please continue washing your hands often; avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth; and stay home. If you absolutely must leave your house, practice the social distancing requirements that have been ordered.
If you have symptoms such as fever, cough, or shortness of breath, please STAY HOME and contact your physician for further guidance.
Our number one priority remains the safety of the Tribe, its Tribal members, and the Reservation community. I want to assure you that we will continue to monitor the situation very closely and will provide any pertinent updates at Hoopaoes.org. Please check the website and read the “Stay at Home” Order.

Starting Monday 4/6/20 Branscomb Center / Radio Shack / U.S. Cellular in Garberville will be requiring some form of mouth and nose covering for entry into the store. An n995, a dust mask, bandanna, or anything that will contain droppels will do. If you don’t have anyway of covering your breath you will be helped outside with the standard 6 foot distancing.
Stay safe friends!
Ernie, we’re spreading the Gospel according to Newsom on the other side of the mountain range, as well. Bunker down like you’ve been snowed in!
Good for you Ernie! & thank you!
The very best of luck to the Hoopa Valley Tribe Office of Emergency Services. I pray that the first patient will make a full recovery. Hoopa folks please follow their rules to safe guard your health and the ones around you. God bless.
I join you in that prayer.
To everyone working at Kimaw:
Be safe, be well, be good!
Proud to know you!
