A Southern Humboldt man and a few other volunteers have created a website to help procure N-95 masks for North Coast medical personnel. Mikal Jakubal who lives in Briceland formed the NorthCoast Mask Brigade to get needed these important supplies into the hands of those who will need it most when a overwhelming COVID-19 outbreak arrives in our area.

“Healthcare workers are on the front lines of the fight against the new coronavirus, and they urgently need this equipment to stay safe while they work to care for our community,” he states on the website.

Jakubal told us during an interview that he based the project on similar ones starting across the country that are designed to fill the gap until the supply chain can catch up to the vastly increased need.

Jakubal explained that he is a nursery owner who did carpentry and as such had a supply of N-95 masks on hand that he wanted to make sure went to medical professionals so he began looking around for a local organization that was facilitating it. When he couldn’t find one, he started one.

He told us that the NorthCoast Mask Brigade is looking for not only donations of masks that people might have stored but volunteers, for example people to pickup masks or other needed equipment from donors and deliver the supplies.

Painters, those working with plants, those who overbought for their needs, and others might have masks like this in their supplies.

Here’s more on what the site is looking for:

Donate Masks or Other Personal Protective Equipment

If you have masks or other PPE to donate, please fill out this form: https://forms.gle/jvHUhcQ8hUb9oyJv7

If you have respirators (or other forms of PPE) that you are able to donate, please complete the form at the link above. Someone will get in touch with you to organize a pickup (to ensure safety, we will ask you to leave the respirators outside your door at a pre-arranged time).

Note: Some healthcare facilities are only able to accept respirators in unopened packages. If you have unused respirators but in opened packages, we will still work to find a facility who can use them. Please make sure to specify the condition of your donated items.

Pickup Masks or Other Personal Protective Equipment

If you can drive to pickup masks or other PPE, please fill out this form: https://forms.gle/Cr1JB8Rh1VdC59Zh7

If you would like to volunteer as a driver, please complete the form at the link above. We will use this information to plan and schedule delivery trips. A member of the logistics team will be in touch once we have enough donation offers in your area.

To maximize safety, we ask that volunteer drivers be healthy, young individuals who do not live with anyone who would be considered high risk (elderly individuals, people with chronic health conditions or compromised immune systems). The goal is to do all pickups without direct human contact, but we want to minimize risk as much as possible.

Request Masks or Other Personal Protective Equipment for Healthcare Facility or Workers

If you represent a healthcare facility or worker in need of masks or other PPE, please fill out this form: https://forms.gle/LHXLVS1SGj2739oB8

We are working on coordinating donation of N-95 respirators and other PPE to local healthcare facilities. Our plan is to have volunteer drivers pick up PPE from outside peoples doors and deliver them where they are needed.

If you are a healthcare facility (or healthcare worker) in need of PPE, please complete the form at the link above and someone on our team will get back to you soon.

They also have suggestions for sewing masks for family and to donate to those like grocery store clerks who are working with the public.

UPDATE 9:43 p.m.: According to Jakubal,

Since the article came out today, we’ve been contacted by three health care facilities who need masks and other PPE.

If you’ve got N95s or surgical masks (like the one I’m wearing, often blue), fill out the appropriate form here: https://sites.google.com/vi…/north-coast-mask-donations/home

Guest, you do know that most products sold on Alibaba are fake or substandard? Masks sold on there as n95 may not really meet those standards..

Mikal, thank you so very much for forming the North Coast Mask Brigade. It is wonderful people like you and your folks helping that makes me grateful to live in Humboldt. Your love and concern for the well being of our residents just does not get any better. God bless you, and all involved.

The mask the guy is wearing is NOT an n95 mask!! Fake news! Coming from a professional medical person an N95 is bare minimum. Preferably an N99 is adequate. That mask does not provide adequate protection. Sorry. A bandanna will work just as well. A TRUE N95 mask has a mini filter and FILTERS 95% of air breathed in.

Not to come across rude, so kudos. Someone doing something is always needed. What is shown is a surgical mask. Cool looking but a 1.25$ bandanna will work as good if not better when worn correctly. Also can be reused. To Mikal, kudos again, positive progress is better than my negative nancy.
