President Trump Sends National Guard to California, Washington, and New York

Today, President Trump announced that in response to the spread of COVID-19 the National Guard will be sent to help three states–California, Washington, and New York.

According to NBC News, “The three states have either been approved or will soon be approved for major disaster declarations to allow the federal government to provide supplies more seamlessly, he said.”

The National Guard being sent by Trump would be under the control of each state’s governors but funded by the federal government.

The California National Guard had already been deployed by Governor Gavin Newsom on Friday. This was announced as a short term deployment to provide manpower for food banks. “Due to COVID-19, many food banks have been affected by a significant decline in volunteerism, impacting logistical and local infrastructure for food distribution,” a press release from the Governor stated.

President Trump has approved requests from California, New York and Washington states for a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration.

According to CNN, this means sending,

    • “Four large medical stations with 1,000 beds to New York
    • Eight large federal medical stations with 2,000 beds for California
    • Three small medical stations with 1,000 beds for Washington”

Trump promised the supplies in the next 48 hours.

I think that Trump federalized the national guard, on top of Newsome activating the national guard in California. If anyone has a knowledgeable explanation, I’d love to learn about the differences in process better. I’ve read a few other pieces about it and it’s not quite making sense to me.

Apparently, not even God could convince haters that Trump truly loves his country and said country’s citizens enough to do anything he can to protect and serve them. All the while, in spite of being called racist and every other insult imaginable, and having many celebrities and others threaten his very life he continues to act in the interest of ALL Americans. He my not be perfect, but he is far better than the screaming mob of haters. We all need to take a step back and stand united in the purpose of overcoming the current enemy. The enemy is no person. It is a virus.

Yes, I agree. I am glad to see action and assistance for California, Washington, and New York coming from the President and Washington. I am happy to see that the President’s Corona Virus Task Force is standing further apart at the briefings

Now, if we – myself, especially – could just stay home for 15 days and break the chain of transmission. Maybe, just maybe, Major League Baseball, College Baseball, Humboldt Crabs, B-52’s will start playing before May? Maybe?

Keep a safe distance when I can’t/won’t stay home. Wash my hands. Stay home. That’s all I can do.

May you all be well.

President Trump has done a great job responding to this virus! It takes a global emergency to undo all financial market gains he has achieved. Lack of early covid testing was due to inferior WHO test kits which give 47 % false positives. Just look at the test FDA approved, results in 45 min. Dems only goal it seems is to derail

I think Trump knew about the virus long before it became a problem in the United States. I also believe he understood the potential ramifications: medical, economic, and political.

Trump’s No. 1 concern is himself and his political survival. So he tried to obfuscate and downplay the known risks associated with the spread of this new virus to attempt to assure his followers that they had nothing to worry about. If they have nothing to worry about, they can go about business as usual and continue to benefit from the strong economy Trump (allegedly) brought them.

Trump knows that presidents who preside over a poor economy don’t get re-elected: “It’s the economy, stupid.” So Trump had to find every way he could to hide the reality that this virus, combined with an already slowing economy, is about to make life really hard for many Americans, and that reality doesn’t suit his re-election efforts and his attempt to stay out of jail by being the president.

So, for the benefit of American citizens who have not paid attention, Trump claimed this pandemic snuck up on us, as if saying that will excuse or hide his monumentally poor response to the pandemic and help justify our national lack of preparedness.

With Trump, it’s always lie, deny, and deflect. Trump hopes enough Americans don’t see that and, rather, see him as a decisive leader in a time of crisis. His record shows he’s ill-equipped to lead us during this crisis, and he hopes we won’t notice it.

But we do.

Official docs show he knew in December.
How you all cant see the problem is beyond me.
Do you people look at anything besides fox? ???

You can FOIA the documents yourself.
Do you now think trumps tweets arent real?
He straight up said “im worried about the numbers”. He said no more tests if we test more people then more will test positive and i dont like those numbers.

So ok then if you think hes doing such a great job then you must think its all been a hoax right so please i beg of you if you feel sick don’t get tested because its a hoax. Stay home with all your friends who feel the same and hang out.

Wait til two weeks from now when your elderly loved one who is sick gets picked as someone who wont get treated because theres not enough equipment and because of lack of testing at the get go. Your loved one can call you to say goodbye but no one can be with them so maybe youll get to hear them suffer as their lungs fill with liquid as they slowly die alone suffering. Or it could be your kid if they already have underlying conditions. When supplies run low triage has to be done and whomever has the least likely chance of survival does not get treated. They get left to die.
Whats sadder is it could have been prevented.
This is the reality of Italy.
But hey its just a hoax right?

So you think ordering tests that are faulty is ok? Sending tests to states without chemical needed to do test? Waiting weeks to test while calling the virus a hoax while the rest of the world tested and told our country to do the same but we didnt because trump didn’t want to look bad?

I mean basically youre saying you’re ok with a president who says one thing then a week later says the opposite?

Haiti is testing every person who gets off a plane. British Columbia has still tested more people than our entire country.

You do get that both governors asked multiple times for these vessels its not like trump just up and offered them.
Dont you think if a pres has power to get a company to mass produce critical items like say masks for medical professionals they ought to do it esp if they already invoked the order that allows it?

And btw if all you do is listen to trump youre not getting the truth. You have to fact check everything he says. Oh the media fact checks are lies huh? Was Google lying when they said no we are not working on a national database as trump said. The FDA when they said no we cant put that med on the market we are the people that test it? The insurance companies when they said oh we’ll pay for testing yes but never did we say we’d pay for tests. Mike Pence announced that one is he a liar too?
Trump averages 7 mistruths per speech. I wish that wasnt true but it is.
But hey again if you love him follow his first words and leave the medical supplies for the rest of us.

In case you forgot his words. ..

Not exactly. Regarding the testing- The first thing any person ought to do when told anything is ask “what exactly does that mean?” Just because you mistakenly think it means one thing when someone says something, does not mean they are lying. It just means you assumed incorrectly.

Regarding British Columbia-

“British Columbia, which currently has a total of 73 cases, has conducted extensive testing in recent weeks. As of March 13, the B.C. Centre for Disease Control had tested 6,326 individuals.
The province announced Saturday it would be shifting its COVID-19 testing strategies to focus on vulnerable groups in order to make sure those resources are available to those most in need. ” https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/shifting-testing-strategy-bc-1.5498241

“”I’m worried that we’re spreading it, because our workers are not self-isolating, they’re going into homes,” said a concerned nurse in the Fraser Health region who works in home support. The nurse asked not to be identified fearing repercussions from her employer.” https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/b-c-health-care-workers-grapple-with-conflicting-messages-amid-pandemic-1.5505165

“B.C. is ordering all restaurants to stop providing dine-in services, as provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced 77 new cases of coronavirus Friday, bringing the total in the province up to 348. ” https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/b-c-announces-77-new-coronavirus-cases-bringing-total-to-348-as-restaurants-close-province-wide-1.5505134

And Haiti, testing for covid-19 means taking passengers temperatures. Does that mean you are a liar because they aren’t doing real covid-19 tests? – “Apparatus for testing the temperature of passengers from abroad will be installed. The awareness messages will soon be visible on the various screens in the departure and arrival halls of Port-au-Prince airport,” confirmed Dr. Delly, who deplored the slow implementation of the measures announced in due to administrative procedures.” https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-29893-icihaiti-coronavirus-toussaint-louverture-international-airport-under-surveillance.html

Oh grow up. Not one of the finger pointers had any concept of what this virus spread meant either when it was only a few cases, maybe, in China. The incredible stupidity of assuming that somehow, out in the universe, there ought to be magical governmental geniuses who ought to be in control of what everyone does, who knows how to protect us from ourselves without inconveniencing us. No wonder there are fervent socialists- their minds run like that, saying to themselves “if only people could be brought to seeing how wonderful the world is if only ___” then insert their own antidote whatever their latest complaint is. This must be why socialism always ends up with a superior dictator to be worshipped like Stalin or Mao or Castro. They truly believe in magical leadership and willingly hands over their thinking to them. Even if what it turns out to be just a superior bully who bullies them.

The reality is that humans are humans, imperfect on many levels. Trump may or may not have “known” about the existence corona-19 virus in December 2019 but to realize the domino effects of its spread was something , which is what the carppers and fantasizers insist he ought have known, is beyond human capabilities. Even if he had been so superhuman as to have the knowledge and understand it, he still could not have prevented the lesser mass of human beings that it was important enough to divert themselves from the normal pettiness. How can this be true? Because t is what actually happens around the world.

Trump has one overwhelming virtue in that he stands like a mountain between me and any power to those who can’t think any more clearly than to leap straight from “there ought to be” to “there is no reason why not” without noticing anything in between. They can’t conceive of another human not wanting a leader to slavishly follow and from that impairment comes the accusations of “worshipping Trump” and all the other ritualized hate spewing. A sad world made worse by the self righteous deluded.

Arizona chloroquine death, maybe two.

And 3 in Nigeria.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/23/health/arizona-coronavirus-chloroquine-death/index.html

If Trump hadn’t opened his hunchy mouth against Fauci’s advice, these deaths could have been blamed on the internet alone.

*Where is Fauci?

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/23/dr-fauci-press-conference-white-house-coronavirus

The president has become increasingly concerned as Dr. Anthony S. Fauci has grown bolder in correcting his falsehoods about the spread of the coronavirus.

Yup, he shouldn’t have. But then those intent on seeing that Trump is blamed for everything and given credit for nothing for political purposes have their own “falsehoods” they over look, like citing an opinion piece as fact. An opinion piece that decides Fauci is the hero of the moment solely because he disagrees with Trump on something. His own statement about this was ” “The president has heard, as we all have heard, what are what I call anecdotal reports that certain drugs work. So what he was trying to do and express was the hope that if they might work, let’s try and push their usage,” Dr. Fauci said. “I, on the other side, have said I’m not disagreeing with the fact anecdotally they might work, but my job is to prove definitively from a scientific standpoint that they do work. So I was taking a purely medical, scientific standpoint, and the president was trying to bring hope to the people.”” https://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2020/03/12/Health-official-Govt-has-failed-to-give-easy-coronavirus-testing-in-US/7841584031816/

But what this repeat of a really biased opinion piece cited says is that Fauci says Trump’s remarks are false. And this comment repeats it. When what he said was it was not proven correct by scientific standards. So clearly many people can’t tell the difference between a false statement and a statement not yet proven.

Quora comment:
Why is Trump lying about the availability of masks and other protective gear for health professionals?
Jim Davis
Jim Davis, former Education Manager/Principal
Answered 1h ago
Donald Trump* believes that if he lies, people will behave in ways they would not behave if he hadn’t lied to them. He does it because it gives him power over situations, the ability to manipulate others. That’s really important to him because if he pitched his ideas in a straightforward way, nobody would go for them. He has a lot of stupid and un-American ideas. So what did he think he would achieve by lying about the masks and other protective gear?

His first round of lies was to poo poo the whole idea of a pandemic. “It’s not here,” he said. Once it was months too late to stop major outbreaks inside the US, the second round of lies was to minimize likely effects of the pandemic he had previously poo pooed. “It’s a flu,” he said. “It’ll die in warmer weather,” “like a miracle.” The matter of inadequate supplies of protective gear belongs to the third round of lies, founded on the delusion that we are in any way prepared to cope with the strain this will put on our healthcare system. And the number of lives that will be lost. “We’re ready,” he said, sounding tough. Well, that’s bullshit. (And of course, blaming it all on Obama runs through the entire Trump* lie cycle. But I digress.)

So why lie about the masks or the test kits or the vaccine, for that matter? It’s not for citizen safety. Citizen safety would require the actual masks, kits, or vaccine. It’s not for citizen awareness because none of it is true. No, Donald Trump* lied about the masks because the pandemic caught him with his pants down, and he’s afraid that if there isn’t nearly enough protective gear or test kits, it will make him look bad, like he’s done a poor job of handling the pandemic. Well, guess what. He has done an abysmal job of confronting the pandemic, and only his hardcore base can’t see the gross incompetence in play here.

So now we’re witnessing the fourth round of lies, the ones where Trump* tries to get everyone to believe that his previous unbroken string of fuck-ups never happened now that things are back on track. Well, guess what again. Because of all of Trump’s self-serving dilly-dallying, things are going to be off the rails for quite a while, in terms of both the economy and public health.

Fact check: Trump raised up from a $200,000 a year allowance by the age of 3. Trump spent it down on a failed casino, and got bailed out. then he went on TV.
And actually the notion of “pullin yourself up by your bootstraps” to be a millionaire is pretty rare. Most wealth in America is inherited.
Average Americans don’t ever see enough wealth to even imagine what a million or billion dollars is.
If you spent $1.00 a second, you could spend a middle class annual income in one day. $86,400.
At $1/sec., you would take 11.5 days to spend 1 million dollars.
At 1$/sec. it would take 31.7 years to spend 1 billion dollars
(doesn’t Bezos have over a hundred billion?..before the divorce? what about his former wife, now the richest woman in the world? Lucky, or actually better/smarter than the rest of us?)
Also, if you earned a billion dollars ( 1,000,000,000) a year, and paid at a 99% rate, you would still have 10 million a year to spend.

Perhaps you just twist what it is they are clapping for to suit your own agenda?

Or just looking for a place to insert some anti Christian hate? In the name of protecting brown people of course? I’m a little surprised cause so many brown people are Christians.

MLK it’s not the color of your skin it’s the content of your character.

Human & drugs traffickers have no character and calling people into their arms is not helpful.
Stop distracting law & order at the border and we could process immigrantes going through the process of coming legally much faster.
Why not push for that? What’s wrong with coming legally and being truly welcomed.

CNN is a fine organization.

The only one who convinced you otherwise can’t spell “corona”, thinks rakes stop forest fires, says the town of “Pleasure” (twice) while in “Paradise” touring fire damage, has been impeached, tweets more than a 13 year old girl, and doesn’t understand sentence structure.

CNN is damned fucking awesome.

CNN was telling us about Covid with live updates 3 weeks before calamity-Hannity was instructed to change his spin into “serious”.

Maybe the left lies less.

Would you want to post their review of FOX, or should I?

Because thats the ideological spectrum.

****Here you go:

Overall, we rate Fox News strongly Right-Biased due to editorial positions and story selection that favors the right.

We also rate them Mixed factually and borderline Questionable based on poor sourcing and the spreading of conspiracy theories that later must be retracted after being widely shared.

Further, Fox News would be rated a Questionable source based on numerous failed fact checks by hosts and pundits, however straight news reporting is generally reliable, therefore we rate them Mixed for factual reporting.

The “left” lies less? Like “The people of Libya and Syria are throwing off brutal dictators for democracy,” “The Russians invaded Crimea,” “The Russians are invading Ukraine and shooting down airliners,” “hands up, don’t shoot,” “Russia hacked the DNC server,” “Trump colluded with Russia to get elected,” “Zoellner is alt-right” “Tulsi is alt-right,” “Tulsi is a Russian asset,” “The Russians are supporting Bernie,” “gender is a social construct,”……. or just about anything coming out of Rachel Maddow’s mouth.

Both the right and the “left” lie. There is next to nothing worthwhile on cable or broadcast news.

CNN is a fine organization.

Don’t obfuscate the fact that FOX news viewers are continuously misinformed more than CNN.

Post Bush invasion of Iraq, FOX viewers actually thought we found weapons of mass destruction.

I think watching any talking head is dangerous. I read news.

I would cite CNN as a credible source far more than FOX.

And it’s a shame that someone with a poor factual history like Trump has convinced the gullible FOX viewers that FOX is the shit and CNN is the shits.

CNN blew their credibility long before Trump ran for President. There used to be a credible argument that CNN and MSNBC were better than Fox back in the Bush years, but no more. Even that’s damning with faint praise, since they were all on board with the Iraqi WMD fraud. Then they all got on board for the same neoliberal warmongering bullshit during the Obama years. They were all marching in lockstep with lies about Libya and Syria. CNN and MSNBC got worse than Fox when they embraced the “hands up, don’t shoot” lie and the “Russiagate” lies.

Yes, there were failures by CNN and others during Mueller’s investigation that doesn’t exonerate Trump of obstruction.

FOX during the Coronavirus has been much more misleading at a much more important time.

But that is standard.

Their interest is to make Trump look infallable and invaluable.

Responsible outlets are now choosing to not broadcast Trumps daily briefings because the amount of misinformation he spreads.

As I remember things We had Ca. AG office pumping out as many lawsuits as every agency in Ca. could think of to hamper Trump with the goal of taking him down.

15 or more Dems running for president most of them in the Congress or Senate and many of them on intelligence and finance committees.

I don’t recall a single one of them enlightening the people of what was happening or suggesting a plan to deal with it although, at least 1 dem and 3 rinos were selling off their stock … many buying in the most lucrative telecom’s and such, to their advantage of course. ( insider trading )

Are you really going to tell me DIFI didn’t know about this virus?
She did suddenly disappear from public, and when she had to appear she did leave ASAP. ( along with her chinese driver the spy)
She had no obligation to tell anyone or get Gavin working on a plan??
Do you believe DIFI knew and didn’t tell Nancy Pelosi?

All while trying to destroy a president that donates his salary to wounded vets and opiate recovery. Just cause he’s so greedy and self serving to hear some people tell it.

As I type SF is neck deep in corrupt contracts through a London Breed hired person selling contracts to Chinese investors being exposed in SFgate and the Chron. (For kickbacks of course.)

Then we have Joe and Hunter.

Haven’t heard a single Dem here complain about that,

and the Dems continue to pretend their poop don’t stink.

Isn’t it fascinating how just a few months ago there was such hatred for the President because he wanted to stop thousands of people from crossing our borders illegally. It was unknown what kind of diseases they might bring with them, not to mention the increased possibility of crime. Now, he is being hated for not securing the borders securely enough soon enough, after, of course, criticizing him first for closing it too soon. I guess the wind just changed direction and with it the focus is on hate, no matter the situation.

There are estimates that 1% of the population may have the virus. That’s 70 million people. If tests continue and infection stops the test will show a 200 fold increase in cases without a single new infection.

Of course. Nobody is claiming that the current 70.8% US death rate among closed cases literally means that 70.8% of cases are going to die. It’s a statistical artifact peculiar to the fact that survived cases take longer to be confirmed as such.

If infections stopped today, by the accepted statistical model, deaths would continue for approximately 3 weeks+. 14 days to show symptoms and 8 days from symptoms to death.

It means that 3 weeks ago the virus was spreading quickly. We won’t know for another 3 weeks if actions today have stymied the rate of spread.

We could easily see a doubling in fatalities while the infection “rate” goes up by an order of magnitude. Ultimately this starts to show the mortality rate is decreasing not increasing.

Thirdeye

We are a long way from having the data to arrive at a valid mortality rate. That’s going to have to wait at least until there’s a steady state between new and closed cases, and there is a solid estimate of the ratio between infections and known cases.

Be careful to distinguish between the number of cases (confirmed, known) and the infection rate (statistical estimate).

Ullr Rover

Definitely. That has been assertion for weeks now. People keep pushing numbers as if they are known facts but fail to assert the caveat, or fail to understand, the dynamics of the equation.

At this time the infection rate and mortality rate are unknown quantities.

The number of deaths, the number of recovered and the number of positive cases against tests administered are the only hard numbers at the moment.

Of course there will be more deaths. I’m just not sure what your objection is to Ullr’s statement. Nor is there any non-political purpose to TRB’s demand that everyone pay attention to his version of statistics. The issue is understanding what the stats mean. The panic-mongering comes from not understanding that the rate of death are not a valid stat until the universe sampled includes everyone, not just those hospitalized. Which is simply not available in WHO stats because they are created by scientists not allowed to guesstimate the universe at this time.
There is a scientific technique for that but it won’t be available for over a year. https://www.umsl.edu/~lindquists/sample.html

It is not trivializing the situation to point out that TRB does not seem to think the universe from which data matters. It totally matters. What he says is like say the chance of dying each year in a car crash is 10% because 10% of people injured in crashes die In reality not everyone crashes their car each year. And a lot of people with fender benders aren’t injured at all and don’t even report them. When you take the whole universe of drivers, then you might find that only a hundredth a percent of all (mark that all) drivers die in car crashes.

It’s the same with these stats. They say that the mortality rate of confirmed positives of covid-19 is such and such a percent. The people who get sick and never get tested are not included nor are the people who never get it. That is why the death rate drops as the sample universe is expanded to include people who aren’t sick or sick enough to get tested. It’s just asthmatic, not some right wing lie. I don’t know why the idea being raised creates such an emotional reaction. Do people really want it to be worse?

Guest
Guest
Guest

Well that’s not quite right either. The universe doesn’t include non sick peoole for WHO stats. It includes everyone who get the virus even if their symptoms are so mild that they never contact a medical provider. That figure is only derived by sampling later. Like the flu stats.

Of course you were exactly talking rates- “deaths speeding up” is the same accelerating death rate.

The importance of this is to know how to minimize the cost to society. If covid-19 is extremely contagious but it’s death rate is not extremely high, then is a population better served by getting it over with, up to the limit of the hospitals to cope with it of course, and then moving back to a good, normal economy rather than crippling the economy for months on end trying to keep people from getting sick who are going to get sick as soon as the extreme restrictions are removed anyway? Because few people can or will stay in self imposed isolation for long periods. https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/23/asia/hong-kong-coronavirus-quarantine-intl-hnk/index.html

The answer to that has to do with the death rate. The horror stories about Italy has to do mostly with demographics and hospital capacity. If Italy is done with it’s mass infection in a month and the survivors are back to their normal lives because most people have immunity and the virus no longer can wreak mass death on them, are they in long term better shape than say places who kept the disease carefully in check but find that it comes back immediately the minute they relax. Are the death rates the same say in two years? It may seem callous but deciding on maintaining extreme measures to keep any one disease at bay may end up causing more death and misery in the end. I don’t know the answer but those who do think about such things should not be forced to take the wrong path by politicking.

Ok. I do not misunderstand but I can see this semantics argument is going nowhere. So, retrenching, looking at your idea of doubling deaths (had to correct myself from typing “rate” because this is the same thing phrased differently) , if 1 person dies one week and the next week 2 died, the deaths are doubled. Is the country to shut down because the deaths doubled or is it important to note whether that was 1 or 2 people out of 20, which is what TRB keeps suggesting, or 1 or 2 out of a thousand or even 1 or 2 people out of 100,000 or even 1 or 2 out of a million? Not that every death doesn’t have meaning but the urgency and extremity of the government reacting, the assigning resources or willingness to create collateral damage for a society is guided the relative number of deaths to the population, not the absolute number. So yes, even though you insist that it is absolute numbers you are talking about , understanding the limitations in determining effected population size matters. Would you risk the lives of many to save 1 or 2 because you can count them and you can’t count the many? Or do you immediately ask “how many?”

Many people aren’t diagnosed, the numbers relate to diagnosed cases.

It’s all quite relative.

The formula for close to precise region case/fatality formulas is on WorldoMeters, which works with the WHO.

However, it also explains the difficulties of this being exact die to it being ongoing and fluid.

Thanks for your love.

From your own linked site “Importantly, in emerging viral infection outbreaks the case-fatality ratio is often overestimated in the early stages because case detection is highly biased towards the more severe cases.” And “But while an epidemic is still ongoing, as it is the case with the current novel coronavirus outbreak, this formula is, at the very least, “naïve” and can be “misleading if, at the time of analysis, the outcome is unknown for a non negligible proportion of patients.” ” Which is all everyone has been telling you- that what you insist is certain, is not. The death rate won’t be certain for at least a year but will certainly be less than is given now . It will keep dropping from the 10% you started alleging until it is scientifically estimate as best as humanly possible.

You didn’t read it correctly.

Or, you’re attempt at falsifying is failing.

Your chosen quote relates to simply dividing the death rate by today’s case load.

It goes on to say that for more accurate readings, you must use the case load of 8 days previous.

Your not that slick, slick.

And I’ve not ever said it was 10% CFR. I’ve said 1%-7%, depending on region.

I think you’re straw-manning TRB. His argument was not about the overall death rate.

If you look at 2009 h1n1 wikipage, you’ll see that the mortality rate was greatly underestimated during the pandemic.

The pendulum swings both ways.

In June 2012, a model based study was published finding that the number of deaths related to the H1N1 influenza may have been fifteen times higher than the reported laboratory confirmed deaths….

A WHO-supported 2013 study estimated that the 2009 global pandemic respiratory mortality was ~10-fold higher than the World Health Organization’s laboratory-confirmed mortality count (18.631).

Or that the H1N1 flu might have actually been as bad as corvid-19? But the EHO didn’ know? Gasp! Are you agreeing with those who said this is like the flu back? Which is what started this kerfuffle in the first place…

There would easily be reasonable ways to compare Covid to the flu.

Unfortunately that was not the nature of Trump, Hannity or the like.

That was a misinformed, dangerous downplaying
of the details and reality at hand.

*Remember 3 days ago, you faught me tooth and nail when I said, ” In 8 days we will have at least 18,000 deaths, but likely much more”?

Well it has only been 3 days, we’re at 18,000 deaths already.

So I’ll check in with you on the 8th day.

18 people died from influenza in Italy today.

700 died from Covid in Italy today.

With lockdowns around the country and the virus centered in a minority of regions.

100% of population is exposed to flu.

Under 5% of population exposed to Covid.

Differences 101.

You’re pulling numbers out of… thin air. You don’t know what percentage of the population is exposed to flu nor exposed to coronavirus.

If you’re going to use numbers be disciplined with them and shoot for accuracy. Otherwise you just invalidate any point you’re trying to make.

18 a day from flu in all Italy from influenza is fact. You’ll have to find Italys influenza numbers, and use some math.

Covid infections @ 375,000 today ÷ 7 bill.=
.005%

I assume many undiagnosed cases so I know saying under 5% was accurate and generous.

So you’re problem must be with the influenza stat.

100% of the population is not infected each year, the idea is that over the period of influenzas time on earth, it has reached 100% of the population.

Maybe less, but not much, is there a population of the world that has never had influenza that your aware of?

So yes, there is evidence for “under 5%.”

Are you kidding?

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

378,000 documented cases.

Call it a million if you want.

Call it 5 million for margin of error.

When formulated against the world population it’s far “under 5%”.

Good lord.

Even at 10 million it’s under 1% of the population.

Influenza touched 1/3 the population in 1918 alone.

Those are tested cases. You’re asserting numbers without including a massive caveat of the unknown. China could have had easily 800k cases or 8 million but without the tests it is unknown. To present numbers like that with certainty is a lie.

The global rate could be anywhere from 0.005% to orders of magnitude more.

Ullr,

.005 is “under 5%”.

And 5% is “magnitudes more” than .005%.

Are you disagreeing to agree?

If infection stops?

What?

A couple weeks ago you implied the virus has an odometer.

Now you think it has a self-imposed infection-cap of 70 million people?

Neat.

The article address a lot of your obfuscating of recent.

-Namely why testing is/was important.

-The high potential of high fatality percentages.

-why it’s important to “flatten the curve” for resource management.

And more. But all you take from it now is “if it stops”.

This is more obfuscating from you.

The article is also a week old, addressing its uncertainty to what caseload we may have.

Again, try reading comprehension. If you’re confused ask a pertinent question and I’ll try to answer. Whatever you do, please stop misrepresenting what I typed. Sometimes it is hard to tell if you do it out of ignorance or maliciousness.

More obfuscating.

I relayed the message a few of us have been saying about growth rate, this message from WHO.

You replied to me with a statement that obfuscates my comment by saying our numbers will still increase even “when infections stop.”

Your continued attempts at downplaying this are silly and obvious.

First apply context. Second ” if” and “when” have entirely different meanings. Anyone applying a brain cell can read that I presented an unlikely hypothetical for the sake of statistical illustration. It’s called a thought experiment.

This has been quite an interesting read I will admit. It seems to me that no politician is responsible for this virus and no one but we the people can slow the spread of it. I’m sixty four years old so there is a chance that it could kill me if I contract it. We are all in this together. Think globally but act locally. We will get through this together no matter the cost

No politician is responsible for the virus.

That is absolutely true. But.

Every politician is responsible for their response and handling of the pandemic.

Why this Nobel laureate predicts a quicker coronavirus recovery: ‘We’re going to be fine’
[quote]

Michael Levitt, a Nobel laureate and Stanford biophysicist, began analyzing the number of COVID-19 cases worldwide in January and correctly calculated that China would get through the worst of its coronavirus outbreak long before many health experts had predicted.

Now he foresees a similar outcome in the United States and the rest of the world.

While many epidemiologists are warning of months, or even years, of massive social disruption and millions of deaths, Levitt says the data simply don’t support such a dire scenario — especially in areas where reasonable social distancing measures are in place.

“What we need is to control the panic,” he said. In the grand scheme, “we’re going to be fine.”

Here’s what Levitt noticed in China: On Jan. 31, the country had 46 new deaths due to the novel coronavirus, compared with 42 new deaths the day before.

Although the number of daily deaths had increased, the rate of that increase had begun to ease off. In his view, the fact that new cases were being identified at a slower rate was more telling than the number of new cases itself. It was an early sign that the trajectory of the outbreak had shifted.

Think of the outbreak as a car racing down an open highway, he said. Although the car is still gaining speed, it’s not accelerating as rapidly as before.

“This suggests that the rate of increase in the number of deaths will slow down even more over the next week,” Levitt wrote in a report he sent to friends Feb. 1 that was widely shared on Chinese social media. And soon, he predicted, the number of deaths would be decreasing every day.

Social distancing is going to have a positive impact for sure. Hopefully Trump doesn’t choose economy over wisdom.

But boy was Levitt wrong huh?

This suggests that the rate of increase in the number of deaths will slow down even more over the next week,” Levitt wrote in a report he sent to friends Feb. 1 that was widely shared on Chinese social media. And soon, he predicted, the number of deaths would be decreasing every day.

I agree, most of us will be fine if we continue to flatten the curve. Many will not.

What is going to happen this fall is what I wonder about.
