McGuire & New Ca Surgeon General to Discuss High Rate of Childhood Trauma in Humboldt County

In January, Governor Newsom appointed Dr. Nadine Burke Harris California’s first Surgeon General.  In the press release announcing the appointment, Newsom’s office wrote,

There is overwhelming consensus in the scientific community around early warning signs and childhood determinants of serious health outcomes. As Surgeon General, Dr. Burke Harris will urge policymakers at every level of government and leaders across the state to consider the social determinants of health, especially for children. Her work will focus on combating the root causes of serious health conditions — like adverse childhood experiences and toxic stress — and using the platform of Surgeon General to reach young families across the state.

The introduction of Dr. Burke Harris begins,

As a pediatrician, entrepreneur and nonprofit CEO, Dr. Burke Harris has dedicated her professional career to understanding the link between adverse childhood experiences and toxic stress in children, and the effect both have on future health outcomes. She is the founder and CEO of the Center for Youth Wellness (CYW) – a national leader in the effort to advance pediatric medicine, raise public awareness, and transform the way society responds to children exposed to adverse childhood experiences and toxic stress.

This is a press release from the office of State Senator Mike McGuire:

Senator McGuire, California’s Surgeon General and First 5 Humboldt come together for groundbreaking Town Hall in Humboldt

Critical community meeting will be focused on preventing and addressing Adverse Childhood Experiences

Sacramento, CA – Three years ago, Senator McGuire and First 5 Humboldt came together for a first-of-its-kind town hall focused on improving the lives of kids here on the North Coast. Unfortunately, Humboldt County has had some of the highest numbers for childhood abuse, neglect and trauma in California (also known as ACES – Adverse Childhood Experiences).

Since that first town hall, it’s been an all-hands-on-deck effort to reverse this disturbing trend and Senator McGuire and First 5 Humboldt are coming back together for a special update to talk about the progress that’s been made, and joining them will be special guest Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, California’s Surgeon General, to talk about ACEs and Humboldt County’s kids.

Dr. Burke Harris is a pediatrician and pioneer on childhood trauma.“While there’s still a lot of work to do, progress has been made to protect our kids and help them thrive over the last few years here locally and across the state. We’re thrilled to be coming back together and to team up with California’s Surgeon General and First 5 Humboldt next Thursday. We’ll be focused on advancing desperately needed solutions to tackle this crisis – here at home and across the state – in the months and years to come,” Senator Mike McGuire said.“The science has shown us that childhood adversity is a root cause of many of the greatest public health challenges we face today – increasing the risk of serious conditions ranging from heart disease, chronic lung disease, and suicide to gun violence, domestic violence and substance dependence. ACEs impact all of our communities throughout California and it is an honor to visit Humboldt County for the opportunity to understand the local approaches being taken to address the impacts of this public health threat,” said Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, California Surgeon General.“First 5 Humboldt is excited to work with Senator McGuire to once again shine a light on how the Humboldt community is coming together to prevent childhood adversity and promote resilience for our children and our long-term health. This Town Hall will be a truly special event, as we welcome California’s first Surgeon General, Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, to Humboldt County. Dr. Burke Harris’ work has been an inspiration to public health and child advocates around the world,” said Mary Ann Hansen, Executive Director of First 5 Humboldt. Here are the event details:WHAT: Senator McGuire and First 5 Humboldt’s Town Hall on Adverse Childhood Experiences featuring California’s Surgeon General Dr. Nadine Burke HarrisWHEN: Next Thursday, November 21 at 6:00 p.m.WHERE: Sequoia Conference Center, 901 Myrtle Ave, Eureka CA 95501

The very best of luck with your new job Dr. Nadine Harris. Childhood trauma cannot be tolerated in anyway shape or form. Time to help the little ones who can’t help themselves. God bless.

California (and especially Humboldt) is SO lucky to have Dr. Burke-Harris working at this level for our children. Her TED talk is an excellent introduction to an epidemic that our county is seriously struggling with. If you are of that old-school mindset that people need to “Just Get Over It” when it comes to childhood adversity, please check out the extensive science on how early trauma impacts one’s life– regardless of later choices in adulthood.

~the **shaken baby syndrome** and “crib death” can both be chalked-up to . . . dun–da–da–dun . . . needle injections of toxic man-made soup. What a surprise!

So many children grow up with poverty, food insecurity, and hunger.

According to the internet, “Around one in five children in California may go to bed hungry each night.”

That’s called living in a liberal wanna be socialists run state guest. California is the poster child of what this country will be when the “blue wave” takes over. Over taxed poor homeless hungry defenseless desperate sheeple that will do anything for a slice of government cheese. Freedom, the American dream and self reliance will only be a thing of myths and legends. Depopulation has began in the most humane way possible. Turning free-spirited livestock into broken docile livestock. The corral gates are open with food, water and shelter ….. grab a number and wait in line. “Please put all weapons and valuables in the green bin before entering! Thank you for your cooperation.”

now If California politicians aren’t the most beautiful people ever!
I must be hallucinating!
McGuire, Newson, and now Dr. Harris?
“I’m Lovin’ It”
And children are simultaneously starving, but obese?
I thought America had a obesity epidemic, or a junk food plague,
Oh yeah, nobody is at home to cook, hmm..
Hard to focus on the kids when you don’t focus on the parents and the lifestyle that our economy mandates..

I know, right? And I had so underestimated, misjudged Newson and now am so glad and impressed and hopeful.
And cooking for kids? For the family? Well that is women’s work and not considered work or pay worthy at all. With a universal wage and more bills like those Newson has been signing there is some hope on the horizon.
Traumatized children need even more care than non-traumatized children yet the foster system is underfunded.

Really?

There are so very few children that reach adulthood without trauma. And that vast majority is already pedalling as hard as they can. Do you really want to help by increasing their trauma by making them responsible for other’s traumas?

PSA…
Babies hear in the womb starting at 28 weeks into the pregnancy. Yelling, screaming, fighting they take it all in and are desensitized before they are born. This wires the brain towards a trauma trajectory. Seeks drama, trama when an adult, unsettled fussy babe when wee. It’s a multi generational disconnect
Want a better world …build a better brain. We need support places for folks that are off track with food, laundry facilities and education opportunities for young parents to spark the change.
Punative punishment and cookie cutter programs fail, each individual holds the key to their own success.

How can you think “each individual holds the key to their own success” while you treat them all as being driven around on the same bus? If that baby eavesdropping in the womb where really valid, no child of Italian heritage in American could do better than learning to tie their shoes. Some families thrive on lots of drama. Very loud at times.

I wonder how much trauma is created by well meaning people constantly reinforcing how traumatized a kid ought to be feeling.

Bravo, Humboldt county. There was an overflow crowd in attendance for this meeting, including many representatives from tribes, law enforcement, health services, and education. Great progress has been made across several agencies since the first town hall meeting on this issue, and more money has been budgeted for making this a priority in our communities.
