At 12:05 p.m. Shelter Cove Volunteer Fire Department received multiple calls reporting smoke coming from a home. According to spokesperson Cheryl Antony, they arrived to find black smoke coming out of the back on the second story of a home on Neptune Road.

Firefighters discovered that the occupant had been remodeling a house when it caught fire.

Concerned the fire could be difficult to stop, firefighters radioed for more assistance. “Because there was quite a bit of wind and it was 72 degrees,” Antony said, “we called for backup.”  Whitethorn VFD and two Cal Fire units came to their aid.

The crews were able to put out the fire though it took some time. “We were there for about three hours,” Antony said. “Damage was extensive in the upper part [of the home.]”

Antony urged residents to “put your address on your house” as it helps firefighters and other emergency personnel locate your home when you need their help quickly.

Cause of fire was the dyer vent, which exit through the roof.
