A tree stump fire that spread to surrounding vegetation and threatened at least one structure was reported Thursday afternoon in the Shively area, prompting a multi-resource response including a request for aerial support.

The fire on Mossi Lane was reported around 1:45 p.m. Initial scanner traffic indicated a tree stump fire had spread to vegetation with one structure threatened. A Rio Dell All-Call was issued along with an additional hand crew dispatched shortly after the initial response. Aircraft was requested due to the threatened structure.

A water tender was also reported responding.

Smoke was visible from Highway 254, according to scanner traffic.

This is a preliminary report based on scanner traffic. Details may change as more information becomes available.

Update 2:17 p.m.: Cal Fire has sent three aircraft to the fire in Shively, now called the Track Fire. Copter 604 is en route from Kneeland. Air Attack CFR 240 and Tanker 94 have departed Redding and are headed toward Shively.

Update: According to scanner traffic, the fire has been extinguished by locals on scene. All but one engine and one water tender still en route to the Track Fire have been cancelled, including the three Cal Fire aircraft.

The fire is reported to have burned a 50 ft x 50 ft area before being contained.

I used to live in Shively, and the locals are a tough bunch. It did not surprise me one bit that they extinguished the burning stump. My only concern was how did the stump catch of fire. Was the property owner burning trash, brush, etc., next to the stump or trying to burn the stump up. Years ago, folks would set the stumps on fire, and they completely burned up including the roots.
