Dean Has Waited 20 Months. Could You Be His Person?

screenshot of white dog with sunset in background.

A dog named Dean has been waiting for a home at the Humboldt County Animal Shelter longer than any other resident — 20 months and counting.

Dean is one of several dogs at the shelter who have been waiting six months or more for a family to call their own. Adoption not only saves a life — it opens a space for another animal in need.

If you’re interested in meeting Dean or any of the other long-stay residents, call the Humboldt County Animal Shelter at 707-840-9132 or visit 24petconnect.com/hmco.

I wish I could! I’m surprised he’s still there, he looks like so much fun!

The question not answered is just that – why?

Someone has to spend time with him to find that out. A lot of people who surrender dogs will underestimate/under report their dog’s behavioral issues. Or if the dog was simply picked up as a stray (and there is no “reporting” from a previous owner), the “why” of what this dog is all about will only be evident to someone who knows where and how to look. Someone who is willing to go beyond providing food, love and dozens of squeaky toys.

This dog will need an extended decompression period after so much time in a shelter. It may take several months, at least. Our current canine was in a shelter for well over one year. Been with us for a bit over 10 months, and it is beautiful to observe him calming down and settling into the secure environment that he finds himself in now.
