Coasties Medevac Ill Passenger from Cruise Ship Off the Coast of Shelter Cove

Press release from US Coast Guard:

The Coast Guard medevaced an ailing cruise ship passenger 45 miles southwest of Shelter Cove, Saturday.

A Coast Guard Air Station Humboldt Bay MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew hoisted a 45-year-old man and transported him to St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka. The man was reported to be in unstable condition.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay received a notification at 8:47 a.m. Saturday from a crew member aboard the cruise ship Queen Elizabeth requesting a medevac for a passenger experiencing a serious medical condition.

After conferring with a duty flight surgeon, who recommended a medevac, watchstanders launched the aircrew and maintained regular communication with the vessel’s crew to monitor the patient’s status until the Coast Guard aircrew departed safely with the patient.

IMHO:

The Coast Guard does it again.
BTW: For the ‘old timers’… this is the ‘newer’ Queen Elizabeth. Built 2010.

And it is back in Seattle right now. Dozens of cruse ships pass us by every week. $$$$. The failed BOS and city councils have not managed to lure any conventional line into our Harbor. $ad.

At least Alaska get$ some tour dollars. What do people do on excursions? We have resources that many areas do not. A good harbor and redwood parks. Average excursion cost is $180/passenger.

A good harbor: I stand corrected.

Cruise ships rarely stop in Humboldt County due to dangerous coastal swells, limited port infrastructure for large vessels, and a lack of established, high-volume tourism demand compared to major California ports. While occasional visits occur, the challenging navigation of the Humboldt Bay bar is a significant deterrent for large cruise lines.
Key reasons cruise ships avoid regular stops include:

  • Dangerous Water Conditions: Rough, high-pressure summer weather creates immense swells, making it difficult and potentially dangerous for large ships to enter Humboldt Bay.
  • Infrastructure Limitations: Eureka has limited public dock space suitable for massive vessels, often requiring specialized arrangements to accommodate them.
  • Logistical Challenges: The region lacks the immediate high-capacity transportation, tourism services, and infrastructure required for thousands of passengers at once.
  • Reputation and Scheduling: Past, scheduled stops have been canceled due to weather, and it is a “copycat industry” where lines prefer destinations with proven, reliable records.

You forgot the welcome committee of delightful dock denizens that inhabit the bay front of Eureka. Then there is “The Dispensary Tour”!

Unfortunately there’s really no reason to stop. I love the Humboldt Bay but frankly it’s lacking in curb appeal and attractions. My understanding is that most stops are limited to a few hours. Possibly a bus excursion to Sequoia Park could be arranged but in reality the passengers are limited to downtown Eureka, which is no better or worse than any other small American town. Do we really need to spend county tax money on attracting a few hundred shoppers a year to the Eureka Waterfront boutiques?

This is the sort of crap juvenile personal insults that RHBB moderators have decided is acceptable when addressed to chosen targets. It doesn’t matter what you think of this commenter or what he says, this sort of response drags everyone into the same gutter of incivility and makes it clear that Kym’s rules are meaningless or at least selectively applied..

If they come into Eureka and let people off – few ever want to come back after the enlightening experience.

I think we might have something with the weed and hookers, we could be a stoner sex trade destination. The average cruise ship has 5,000 people on it now see a third of them are adult men. we can get almost 2,000 customers just for the hookers alone.

Hopefully not carrying the Hanta Virus as is the cruise ship sitting off West Africa’s shore awaiting help. Hanta not usually contagious among people, not usually. Three deaths. One commenter on article about the ship said that per advice from a coworker, who also travelled a lot, carrying a black light was vital and disinfectants and gloves…apparently things “Look clean” until you flick on that black light.
Per AP News: “WHO is aware of and supporting a public health event involving a cruise vessel sailing in the Atlantic Ocean,” the organization said. “Detailed investigations are ongoing, including further laboratory testing, and epidemiological investigations. Medical care and support are being provided to passengers and crew. Sequencing of the virus is also ongoing.”

Our great men and women of the Coast Guard fly to the rescue again. It does matter what the weather is these Coast Guard men and women it let nothing stand in their way. I hope the 45-year-old man is doing fine and will be out of the hospital shortly. He possibly owes his life to them. May God bless and protect every single Coast Guard person! Hero’s one and all.

WOW! What a video, our coasties are beyond incredible! Hoisting an intubated patient while the boats moving and ocean winds blowing. Absolutely amazing 🌟 We are so lucky to have them close by.

Yes they are!!! Too bad the Democrats found it necessary to not pay them. Remember that when you vote!

What I’m going to remember when I vote is that Democrats stood up to the murders and civil rights abuses from two of the other branches of DHS. Republicans did absolutely nothing in response, zero.
