WIC Recipients Can Now Receive Market Match at NCGA Farmers’ Markets

This is a press release from the North Coast Growers’ Association:

The North Coast Growers’ Association is excited to announce that WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) recipients may now receive a daily market match at farmers’ markets across Humboldt County.

Starting April 25th, the North Coast Growers’ Association will offer a $20 match to WIC recipients who spend their card benefits with WIC authorized farmers on fresh fruits and vegetables.

The WIC Market Match will be available at farmers’ markets located in: Arcata, Eureka, Fortuna, McKinleyville and Garberville. See full schedule below.

Funding provided by the California Nutrition Incentive Program has made this program possible.

See more information here.

How does the WIC program work at the farmers’ market?

  1. WIC recipients will need a WIC card that has a QR code on it. Contact your WIC office if you do not have the QR code card. WIC users can then spend their card benefits directly with WIC authorized farmers (see list below). At the market, look for signs posted at booths that say “WIC and Senior Benefits Welcome.” The farmer will enter the amount owed by the customer on their mobile device and then scan the QR code on the card provided by the customer to complete the transaction. Farmers can also provide balance inquiries and void transactions.
  2. WIC recipients can then receive a Market Match at the Market Info Booth in the form of paper vouchers that can be spent directly with any farmer on fruits, vegetables, and plants and seeds that produce food.
  3. WIC agencies are also issuing additional market match vouchers to brand new participants.

This sucks for the people not on snap or EBT because the farmers end up charging double prices to farmer market customers due to market match, don’t be greedy farmers! Food doesn’t cost twice as much as grocery store to grow
