Press release from the City of Eureka:

The City of Eureka will be performing a traffic signal light replacement project at the above location in Eureka beginning Friday, April 17th, 2026 at 9 a.m.

The northbound and southbound travel directions on S Street will have new traffic signal lights featuring a protected left turn traffic pattern. This new traffic signal configuration at Harris Street and S Street will service southbound S Street travel lanes singularly and then terminate, followed by the service of northbound travel lanes indicated with new 4-section signal lights featuring protected left turn indicators.

Intersection will have signage on S Street notifying users of the signal work configuration.

The patience and cooperation of motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians in the vicinity of the of the Harris Street and S Street is greatly appreciated while the traffic signal reconfiguration is being implemented.

The City of Eureka realizes that this disruption is an inconvenience, but maintaining the City’s
streets infrastructure is vital to the health and safety of our residents.

Good deal… the newer configuration is working pretty well on Buhne and Harrison.
Needs to be done on Buhne and ‘S’ streets too.

OK one step forward. Now when do we doze the bumpouts, and golf course pylons, and bike lanes of C, H, and I streets?

I have stopped going to Eureka as much as possible. Ukiah has much better shopping and medical care.

However… Ukiah has much less friendly street design. Their intersection hemorrhoids got abused so badly by trucks that couldn’t make it clear around them that they put tire damaging metal on the edges.

North State is a racetrack on any day ending in -Y, all the way to Coyote Valley. Those metal edges might expose the city to litigation too. Just look at Eureka and all it’s lawsuits against it, one of them by someone that apparently didn’t navigate a sidewalk crack. Say what you will about that one, but people will line up with lawsuits if these “improvements” don’t actually improve anything and vehicles are damaged. Even if they lose, it still costs the city money.

as of about 9:10am 4/17/26 they had the lights down on the north and southbound lanes, and it was functioning as a 4 way stop during the work. There is no signage leading up to it or after it heading north where this is currently a closure for laterals as well.

Happy to hear they are finally getting around to explaining to folks who haven’t already figured out how to handle this junction since the light prioritization was changed a few weeks back.

Anyone with a CDL is required to know how to handle the stoplight. But you know…….people are SAF.
