SACRAMENTO LEADERS FIGHT RELEASE OF ANOTHER CHILD SEX OFFENDER UNDER ‘ELDERLY PAROLE’
Sacramento County officials are trying once again to stop the release of a prolific child sex offender who is set to be freed under California’s elderly parole program.
Gregory Lee Vogelsang is 57 years old. He was sentenced to 355 years in prison in the 1990s for dozens of counts of kidnapping and sex crimes against children as young as five.
The parole board granted his release on November 4, 2025 after 27 years in prison.
“The parole board is letting us down; they are horrible,” said Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper. “After this case and the Funston case, they need to be gone, period.”
Cooper was referring to another convicted sex offender, 64-year-old David Allen Funston, who was recently granted parole under the same program. Before Funston could be released into the community, Placer County District Attorney Morgan Gire filed additional charges from a 1996 assault, helping to keep him behind bars.
Cooper and other county leaders are also calling for changes to the elderly parole program. Initially, the law applied to people ages 60 and over who had served at least 25 years. It was signed into law by former Gov. Jerry Brown. In 2021, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a new law lowering the eligibility age to 50 and the time-served threshold to 20 years. On Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Brian Jones (R-San Diego) introduced a bill that would raise the minimum age of eligibility to 60 and the minimum time served to 25 years.
In the meantime, Sacramento County District Attorney Thien Ho has asked the parole board to re-examine its decision to grant Vogelsang parole. A hearing will be held on March 18.
