Following a tip from a community member, Redheaded Blackbelt contacted California Department of Fish and Wildlife Public Information Officer Eric Laughlin, who confirmed the agency did respond. “The source is still under investigation, but the fuel sheen may be from a 49-foot fishing vessel per preliminary observations,” Laughlin said. He added that no oiled wildlife was observed following an assessment by a CDFW scientist.
According to a Cal OES Hazardous Materials Spill Report filed Monday, the release originated from the fishing vessel Valliant docked at Woodley Island Marina, Dock B, across the bay from where the tipster reported seeing the oil sheen. The cause of the release is unknown, though the bilge is suspected.
Booms were deployed and cleanup was completed by Woodley Island Marina staff, according to the report. The investigation remains ongoing.
Agencies notified include the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. EPA, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, California Department of Fish and Wildlife Office of Spill Prevention and Response, the Regional Water Quality Control Board, and Humboldt County Environmental Health, among others.
Anyone who observes an oil spill can report it statewide by calling the Cal OES State Warning Center at 1-800-852-7550, which dispatches agencies to incidents throughout California.

Hope there are some hefty fines.
The current cost to replace the diesel will be be hefty.
Sounds like a load of bilge.
TG, there will be many citizens monitoring this.
Barracuda still on the end of the dock? Ya, bilge pump and probably a tank leak.
IMHO:
OMG !
People panicking !
Wildlife dying !
Ocean Polluted !
Salmon salmoming !
Seals sealiing !
Cops copping !
BTW: A half-a-cup of diesel makes a huge sheen.
Some History:
Remember when the State of Californika had a ‘rapid oil spill response’ barge stationed here ? Barge sat for years.
There is (or was) 3 full stories of an office building in Sacramento… that was loaded with ‘detailed response plans’ for every mile of Californika Coast. Tons of paper, that were never used.
CFG/State finally (money cost $$$) came out with a more reasonable plan, which was based on the outcome of the Exxon Valdez Alaska oil spill. (Hint: Treatments made it worse).
Finally, the rapid response barge disappeared.
I dunno if the paper was re-cycled… there were tons of it. Probably still exists.
Now, Californika treats spills that affect bays with smaller local booms. Protect oysters, shellfish and other estuaries Let the rest of the coastline go.
Hint: The ocean will take care of itself. WWII had millions of gallon of oil spill from maritime action, including here. You can view the bow of the tanker Emidio in Crescent City (Photo attached).
Go figure.
