Minivan Over the Embankment After Semi Collision North of Leggett Amid High Water

Traffic Collision Car Accident Feature iconA minivan reportedly went into the South Fork of the Eel River after a collision with a semi-truck around 7:13 p.m. tonight near mile marker 97 on northbound Highway 101 in the Leggett area, according to the California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information Page and scanner traffic. The vehicle is reportedly 200 feet down the embankment.

One entry notes the semi is on the right-hand shoulder following the crash. A reporting party advised the vehicle might be visible from the roadway.

A water rescue response was requested. However at 7:30 p.m., emergency personnel reported that the occupant of the mini van has “self-extricated” from the vehicle and was being evaluated medically.

The South Fork of the Eel River is currently running high following recent storms. An air ambulance was initially requested, but responders indicated weather conditions would likely prevent a medical helicopter from flying.

Scanner traffic indicated four CHP units and one Mendocino County Sheriff’s deputy were en route as well as Leggett Fire. As of 7:21 p.m., CHP was in contact with Caltrans regarding possible lane closures.

This crash comes on a day when we have already reported on two other vehicles entering waterways amid heavy runoff (here and here). It also follows closely on the news that an elderly couple from Covelo was found deceased after their vehicle went into the Eel River.

The driver of the minivan after going down a two-hundred-foot embankment is very lucky to be alive. I am happy that the driver self-extricated and is being under the care of responders. There have been a few times lately the air ambulance companies won’t fly in stormy weather. Just call our men and women of our great Coast Guard. They are trained for this type of mission and will roll out when requested. I also hope the semi driver is fine.
