Emergency crews responded Tuesday afternoon to a rollover traffic collision on Tomki Road near Cave Creek after a vehicle reportedly went into the creek.

According to incident logs, the crash was reported at approximately 2:25 p.m. on the 22000 block of Tomki Road. Initial details indicated a “vehicle into creek.” Dispatch notified CAL FIRE shortly after, and units were assigned and en route.

Scanner traffic indicated two individuals were stuck in the bed of the truck, which was reported to be in the middle of the creek. Responders arriving just before 3 p.m. confirmed the situation and began working on a plan to safely extract the two people.

The extent of injuries, if any, was not immediately known. Emergency personnel remain on scene coordinating the extraction effort.

Motorists traveling along Tomki Road near Cave Creek are advised to use caution in the area as crews continue working.

This incident is developing, and more information will be provided as it becomes available.

Update 3:10 p.m.: According to scanner traffic, the two individuals have been rescued from the bed of the vehicle and are now declining medical care, AMA.

The incident commander requested a tow truck for the half-submerged truck and for CHP to respond to the scene.

Update 3:30 p.m.: According to scanner traffic, a swift water rescue team is en route to the crash scene to extract the two individuals from the partially submerged vehicle.

Update 3:43 p.m.: The incident commander reported back to dispatch that crews were actively trying to rescue the individuals from the vehicle submerged in the creek. Additionally, the commander reported that the creek was too high to attempt to retrieve the vehicle today, indicating waters would need to recede before a tow truck would be able to extract the crashed rig.

Update: The incident was cleared after the two individuals were rescued from the vehicle. According to CHP CAD logs, Fish and Game was notified, and officials determined the vehicle was not leaking fluids into the creek. Crews plan to attempt removal of the vehicle tomorrow, if water levels recede.

Note: An earlier update incorrectly stated the vehicle occupants had been recovered from the vehicle and declined medical attention. We must’ve attributed another vehicle collision call status update to this incident. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

Really? Four wheeling through the creeks? That is disturbing. Some of us work so flippin hard to protect our earth, our watershed and our flora and fauna and then others purposely destroy it all because they were bored. Doomed as a species. So sad, so disappointing. I hope these two get charged with polluting the watershed at least.

Important note:
That section of Tomki Rd, on the North side of the pass (Russian/Eel) runs right next to Cave Creek.
There are 7 unmaintained (for >10yrs now) creek crossings on the drive from the start of the gravel, at the Tomki Rd & Cave Creek Rd intersection down to near the Tomki Rd & Canyon Rd (most direct road to Willits) intersection.

Many people live out there and can’t get around without crossing the creek 1-7 times on a one-way drive of <3 miles.
These days that’s truly fording the creek.
Lifted trucks and snorkels are quite common out there.

They MAY have been playing jackass & dufus out there, BUT…
Unless you KNOW, not think or believe, why these guys were there, meaning that maybe they live out there and/or maybe they had very real reasons to risk their asses trying the crossings, passing judgement on them is highly presumptuous & unfounded spurious speculation because you DON’T KNOW.
