Highway 299 is closed this morning between Blue Lake and the East Fork Campground east of Berry Summit as winter storm conditions continue to worsen in the mountains. There is currently no estimated time for reopening.

According to the California Highway Patrol, State Route 299 is closed from the Blue Lake Weigh Station to mile post marker 33 due to snow, falling trees and power lines, and disabled vehicles blocking the roadway. Officials are urging the public to avoid the area and say updates will be provided as conditions change.

The closure comes as a winter storm continues to bring heavy snow to interior areas of Humboldt, Trinity, and Del Norte counties. The National Weather Service warns that snow levels may continue to fall to around 1,000 feet, with additional snowfall expected through early Thursday morning. Travel across mountain routes in the region could be very difficult or impossible at times as snow accumulates and winds bring down trees and power lines.

Officials continue to urge residents to delay travel in higher elevations until conditions improve.

UPDATE 9:55 a.m.: CHP reports, “Cal Trans and PG&E have worked diligently to reopen the road for both directions. We encourage drivers to be cautious in the area.”

UPDATE 4:17 p.m.: CHP reports that there is Chain control on and off from 17.5 miles east of Blue Lake to 4.5 miles west of junction HUM-96.

With some disabled vehicles blocking highway 299 I was wondering if those people have been rescued and taken to a warm place like a motel. If they are still there and unprepared their lives could be in danger from hypothermia. If they run their vehicles to stay warm and the snow has covered the exhaust they can die from carbon monoxide poisoning building inside their car. I do hope everyone is ok.

Martin, despite your sage advice and concern for people’s well-being, your comment is obviously uncalled for based on someone’s down vote.

At the risk of drawing my own down votes, I wish everyone out there safe travels.

People with 4WD’s/winter tires are giving rides to Willow Creek for the stranded drivers and passengers.

Good people still exist.

And stay in the car. Don’t leave until rescued.

IMHO:

Thursday morning… road conditions may be far worse.
Including 101, 299, 199, 36 and other local roads.

That will be the coldest night in this weather er… ‘event’.

Ground temps should be well below freezing.

If it rains or snows during that night/morning… LOOK OUT.
Wet patches on the road will be frozen… LOOK OUT.

You can see that it was plowed at the bottom by the sand house. I don’t know how far up it’s plowed. I did see vehicles going up there.

Dunno if CalTrans would know.

It’s a Humboldt County Road up to the Horse Mtn communications station.
Humboldt County Road department would know. (Usually Plowed)

Then it is USFS Six Rivers Forest Highway 1 beyond that point.
(Usually Un-plowed)
