North Coast Highways

Snow on 299

After several days of  rainy weather, North Coast highways remain mostly passable today, Thursday, January 8, 2026, though travelers should be prepared for some snowy mountain passes on higher routes. As of this morning, major highways across Humboldt, Mendocino, Trinity, and Del Norte counties are generally open, but conditions can change quickly.

Mountain areas are seeing the biggest impacts. A Caltrans traffic camera at Berry Summit on Highway 299 shows snowy conditions but sunny skies. Drivers crossing mountain passes should be alert for slick pavement, reduced visibility, and the possibility of chain controls if conditions worsen, but that’s unlikely.

Highway 36 has chains required in some areas of Trinity County.

The National Weather Service reports cold, wintery conditions lingering over higher elevations, with snow possible on mountain highways and wet roads at lower elevations. Even where highways are open, shaded areas may remain icy, especially during the morning hours.

Looking ahead, conditions are expected to improve later today and into the coming days.
