A large redwood tree—likely second-growth—fell across the Mattole/Honeydew Road about one mile west of Highway 101 in the state park areas on Friday, completely blocking both eastbound and westbound lanes.

Although residents began posting about the downed tree on social media earlier in the morning, the first official report came in about 12:15 p.m.

CHP noted on their CAD page that California State Parks should be advised of the issue.

The fallen tree appears to have snapped and splintered rather dramatically, with large sections of wood scattered across the roadway.

Motorists traveling through the Mattole and Honeydew area should check for updates before attempting to use the road. It was not immediately clear when the tree would be cleared.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

UPDATE: According to the State Parks, “Mattole Road was cleared of the downed tree a little before 3pm Friday December 26, 2025.”

To clarify: Not really near Honeydew. About 22 miles away if it’s a mile west of 101.

It’s actually within the slide zone, between Rockefeller Forest and Cow Creek.

If they’re passing the problem to state parks it will be closed for months. Better to get county to cut it or have high rock crew come out.

I have yet to run across someone who was told “no” when offering up saws and some time to get fallen logs out of the way. Myself included. You don’t get to keep the wood if it’s in the parks, but people out past there don’t wait to get things like this cleared out.

A couple of guys with chain saws (and knows what they are doing) can trim it down within an hour or so…
OR
We can wait for the legal dept will take a week or so to get it done..

Your choice. 😉

Perfect example of how the private sector can almost always be more efficient than the government.

Just wondering if the road has been cleared?
