Small Early-Morning Quake Near Blue Lake Felt by Some on the North Coast
A little after 5:35 a.m. this morning, a light earthquake rippled through parts of Humboldt County, briefly waking some early sleepers in Blue Lake and McKinleyville.
According to the Redwood Coast Tsunami Work Group (if you don’t already follow them on Facebook, we recommend that you do), the quake registered a preliminary magnitude of 3.3 and was centered 3 miles (4 km) northeast of Blue Lake at a depth of 21.7 km.
Though the shaking was sharp in the immediate area, the earthquake was too small to trigger ShakeAlert notifications, which generally activate only for stronger or potentially damaging events.
Residents who felt the jolt can help scientists improve seismic data by submitting a Did You Feel It? report to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Reports can be filed at here.
