A tan sedan went off the roadway and over the side just north of Area 101 near mile marker 79.3 around 4:57 p.m. this evening, according to the California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information Page. The vehicle was reportedly not visible from the road, and witnesses told dispatchers the sedan had been swerving prior to the crash.

Emergency crews were assigned at 4:58 p.m., and responders at the scene requested extrication to reach those inside the vehicle. Scanner traffic indicated that an air ambulance has been ordered, though the condition of the occupants is not yet known.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

Note: A map of the original location of the crash site given on the CHP cad has been added to this article.

Update 5:40 p.m.:
The CHP cad indicates the vehicle came to rest about 15 yards down a steep embankment, updating the location to an area near mile marker 80.1. A bystander reported that the driver is conscious but has moderate injuries. Extrication is still required.

A tow request has been placed for a Toyota Corolla with major front-left damage, and McCaffery’s Tow has been notified. Emergency crews continue working to reach the driver and remove the vehicle from the hillside. This article will be updated as more details become available.

Update: At 6:30 p.m., CHP listed this as a major injury collision.

McCaffery’s Tow has recovered the vehicle, and the scene is clear.

“…over the side just north of Area 101 near mile marker 79.3…”, does give us a couple of semi solid clues, as far as the crash sites mile marker 79.3 I’mn Humboldt general location, but, it’s hard to be certain…

Is Area 101 the Hog Farm just North of Laytonville…???

Or is it the old candle shop at South end of Bell Springs Road where it meets Highway 101…???

Or is Highway 101 Mendocino mile marker 79.3, closer to Leggett…???

I’m so confused…

Not that the count was mentioned, but, either way, I think it would be safe to say it IS in Mendocino, not Humboldt, as Highway 101 Humboldt, mile marker 79.3 is about 27.8 miles North of Scotia…(Easy to remember Humboldt 101 mm 51.50 is at Scotia)

Dropped pin on Loco shows this on Highway 101 in Mendocino County, just north of Spy Rock Road, between Leggett and Laytonville…

Milepost 79.3N is right at Area 101, which is the old hostel, hippie commune, Alien landing site and farm, whatever you want to call it and near that candleshop house on the east side of the highway. It’s nearly exactly 100 miles south of Eureka.

Major injury. Weaving before accident. I hope the occupant is going to be OK.

I do hope the driver will be ok. Why was the driver weaving all over the road before the crash. Did the driver have a medical problem that caused him/her to lose control, a mechanical problem, etc. Calling in an air ambulance makes me wonder if the driver is severely injured. Just praying for the best outcome possible.

Air medical doesn’t get called in for a sprained wrist. Also:

Update: At 6:30 p.m., CHP listed this as a major injury collision.

I know when an air ambulance is called because I am a member. I realize it is a major injury accident, and I just hope the driver will make a complete recovery. Thanks for the update.

Why would anyone give a -1 for your comment?

Because they want to be contrarians and a downvote is easier than a written statement. I wouldn’t know. Or they think this is Reddit where (-) votes pushes your comments down the thread or out of view.
