One Dead After Fall from Cliffs at Popular Beach in Town of Mendocino

One person reportedly died Tuesday evening after falling from the cliffs above Portuguese Beach, a scenic cove just west of downtown Mendocino.

Scanner traffic indicated the incident was first reported at 6:38 p.m., when local fire crews and other first responders were reportedly dispatched to the area of Heeser Street and Main Street. Initial reports reportedly coded the call as an 11-44, indicating a deceased person on the beach.

Emergency crews, including California State Parks rangers, were reportedly on scene. A first responder at the top of the cliff radioed that they would descend to confirm the subject’s condition. At 6:52 p.m., the subject who fell was reportedly confirmed deceased. The Mendocino County Sheriff’s coroner’s unit was requested.

Portuguese Beach, known for its sandy shoreline framed by dramatic rocky headlands, sits below steep cliffs that draw visitors year-round.

Are there enough warning signs on the bluffs in Mendocino? I know there’s one sign on the west bluff near the road, but I don’t recall seeing other signs. Since people tragically fall off the bluffs fairly often, more signs might help save lives. I think tourists are captivated by the beauty, but don’t realize the danger. I feel it’s up to Mendocino to protect visitors as well as locals by making sure they are informed of the risk. What are the reasons for not having more warning signs posted in Mendocino?

This is so true of California’s entire coastline.

Maybe the signs are all down on the beach now.

I agree with you that being captivated by the stunning beauty masks normal awareness of danger — on the bluffs and on the roads. I always warn my out-of-town friends about that before inviting them — some good friends I don’t invite.

City Council doesn’t want the signs visible in tourists’ pictures.

There are so many apps on phones now that can alter photos and remove objects; this shouldn’t even be a concern now.

Not everybody uses a modern smartphone for photography! Some folks even use film.

Nanny culture wants warning signs posted everywhere. Big Lagoon sneaker wave zone makes sense. But everywhere there is obvious big drop in elevation? That’s too much nannyism! Gravity can kill you. You should not walk to the edge of steep cliffs. Maybe instead people should teach this to their children. I don’t think we don’t need warning signs posted everywhere always – in fact we should start removing them.

This is probably the most important aspect of the world we live on.

The physical signs of a life going wrong can be witnessed by anyone traveling through any urban town in America.

putting signs up is the legal departments way of dealing with accountability

after the fact

the legal profession is not working for humanity, or at least the ones who have the ability to make a difference.

who is to say that this woman didn’t
show more discipline than any alcoholic,
more than your avg drug abuser,
more than your average welfare recipient

more than anyone who failed
a new year’s revolution

this woman probably recognized how entirely futile it was to seek help from people unable and or unwilling to see what the world has created when given over to sociopathic management.

people simply run out of pavement and they were not adequately prepared for trudging down that rocky road of a harsh awakening.

Your percentages are way too low. Signs assume you can read and comprehend. Don’t mess with Darwin.

Signage doesn’t work. People do NOT read signs, or if they do, they ignore them. For some reason they think they know better or just don’t care to respect efforts to protect them from their own ignorance.

The most recent death by fall on Portuguese Beach before this one was a 65-year-old resident of Mendocino Village who had lived here for years. He needed signs?

Not painless for the survivors.
