“Holy scary moment, Batman!”
Hazmat was requested to pick up his underwear
When he’s back on the road, give him a shout.
don’t feel bad, I also got down-voted for a humor attempt in a non-injury incident, probably the same person. A sad person. I’m a bit sad these days. We almost had it all. As the captured Japanese officer is alleged to have said, watching incoming American ships off-loading food and supplies at Guadalcanal: these people have it all. LOL. Participation trophy, door prize.
Someone who woke up early and did everything right is gonna miss the slide opening and sit with their thumb up their ass for 2 hours…so much fun!
It’s surely an accident the log truck driver did not almost kill himself for fun! 🙄
I’m not saying anything about the log truck driver, whom I hope is fine and probably had the same concerns about getting to the slide, all it takes is one unexpected half hour delay and your day is f’d. I just mentioned this to my wife who is giving me a ride tomorrow to get my car out of the shop…$2200 in front end suspension damage from driving around the slide…and now I have to wake up at 5am instead of getting the extra hour!
As per the ca drivers manual ,available at the dmv, there is no such thing as an accident. Only traffic collisions over 90 % of which are caused by human error (inattention).
They could have prevented it by slowing down.
How can you slow down when your breaks fail? Imagine being on the switch backs going down hill and your breaks fail. Stop assuming the drivers are always at fault and being judgemental when you don’t know what happened.⁹
No maitenance then. Failed to check brakes. Speeding and using them too much. There’s a reason they failed.
No he did his inspections he only had a small radiator leak pryor.. everything else was fine and everything was checked before hand. Plus he was not even going 15 mph.. he is a very experienced driver and no he wasn’t riding his breaks.. he did everything by the book and then some.. the truck was just a bad truck always something going on with it.. was not the driver fault ..all breaks went out.. nothing he could do or prevented
Thank you suzy. It is bad enough to be in a wreck then have to be blamed for things beyond his control is a bit too far. I hope he has a speedy recovery.
Eh ? Downhill, big load ?
Big thing is select the proper gear. Apply Jake Brake (if available).
Let the engine do most of the braking.
But that means you have to go really slow. If you let the truck ‘get away’ from you… you’ve got big trouble.
In the ‘old days’, most of the trucks had er… ‘water cooled’ brakes.
Actually it was just a tank that sprayed water on the brake drums.
Don’t see water cooled brakes anymore.
My husband be driving big rigs for over 25 years knows the road better than most..he was in the lowest gear was using his Jake’s and did everything in the books wasn’t even going 15 mph.. nothing could stop him.. By God and some K rails stopped him from going over the cliff.. he’s gonna be alright. 1 broken rib and fractured L1 with cuts n bruises..
Where does it say his brakes failed?
In the comments — stated by Reva, step-daughter of the driver.
Was she in the truck?
Reva, I pray your family member is doing ok, and he’s back in the saddle again soon.
Caltrans has created a situation where you can’t slow down. There are 6 traffic stops from Triumphant Life Camp to the slide that can add up to an hour and a half to the drive and you have to hit the windows to avoid a 2 hour closure. At the time this happened he was flipping out to get to the slide closure before 9am with the stops still ahead. There is no way to plan anything the way they have it.
That may suck but something drivers just have to deal with. They are not making anyone put their foot to the metal. Deal with the delays. Or get a different job.
No he knew he was gonna have to stop at the slide because i met up with him just about 20 minutes before this happened.. he was not in a hurry and wasn’t even doing 15. Mph
He was going in the lowest gear and he is a very experienced driver. He wasn’t even moving 15 miles an hour… the trucks breaks went out and he tried everything in the books to get it to stop but she just kept rolling.. by the Grace of God and the K rails he didn’t go over the cliff..he horned at the flagger and she was Able to get all the construction workers outta the way..so no one else got hurt.. in return the construction workers helped my husband get out of his truck.. it’s a miracle he walked away with only a broken L1 and a broken rib
Rolling a fully loaded logging truck over will make you wet your pants. The driver is lucky to only have received minor to moderate injuries. Just lucky there were no other vehicles coming in the opposite direction. The logs dumped all over the road could have killed someone. Thank you to the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Department, City Ambulance, Cal Fire and Caltrans for responding to the scene.
Following for updates cause this is my step dad, but I’m currently stuck in the hospital as well and not getting as many updates.
Reva, we’re wishing your stepdad a quick recovery. According to scanner traffic, the driver suffered from some road rash but initial reports are not always accurate or tell the full story.
I hope your stepdad is okay.
Reva, I very happy that he was not killed in the accident. He must be a tough nut. Get well so you can leave the hospital and go home to see your stepdad.
Slow TFD
Time is money. Money feeds families. Expenses are high. Fuel cost is out of sight. Life in the fastlane…
No excuse. Get a different job
He’s been a commercial driver most his life.. wasn’t his fault the brakes went out..he was in the lowest gear with his Jake’s and he did everything he could and she just kept rolling..wasn’t even going 15mph it’s a miracle he is still alive.. he is one of the top best drivers in California.. most drivers know him
Thank you Suzy. It sounds to me like he had a darn good excuse, and I hope he stays with his job.
-1?… Of course, downvoting reality will solve the world’s problems.
That is the most assanine take, I hope you are being sarcastic
Damn, we’re getting some good comments.
No, I was being asinine. Reality is like that.
We don’t know what caused the accident, but a lot of mistakes are made due to the pressures that people suffer.
A little more sympathy for the poor driver would not hurt. I’m real sure that he didn’t do it on purpose.
OK, but if he was not getting enough sleep or heavily medicated that should be known. If sleep was lost over a sick family member or whatnot, OK, we’ll look at that. The old ways of sweeping under the rug do nothing to solve the problem. The assumption you make is that the driver was not impaired. How do we know that? Did I miss it?
Again he wasn’t tired..has never done drugs..and no emotional damage, been an experienced commercial driver for over 25 years . He was only going 15 mph was in lowest gear and using his Jake’s and the breaks still went out nothing he could do..he did absolutely everything he could do. But she just kept rolling, he walked away a broken back and rib and is recovering
Well, yeah, Ern’, but if you have to cripple or kill yourself or others to make ends meet, something is wrong. Yeah, fishing, logging and even steel-making and working with cattle are dangerous, I know. This is why folks become liberal and Democrats and UNION members so they don’t face death or dismemberment every work day with no recourse. BTW, did you notice the Trump Big Beautiful Bill adds a few percentage points to billionaire wealth while cutting benefits to the howling masses AND adding 3+ trillion$ to the debt. That’s old-school Republican boilerplate. STILL GETTING AWAY WITH IT!
He wasn’t even doing 15mph. All of his breaks went out there was nothing he could do.. all the construction workers saw what happened he is a very experienced driver God kept him from going off the cliff
Someone once told me that Hwy 36 is one of the most dangerous roads in California. I never go up there anymore.
Well, if someone once told you that then it must be true.
IMHO Stuff:
Hwy 36 dangerous ?
Summertime ? Not really.
Wintertime ? Well, sort of… watch for ice/snow/rocks in the mountains.
Middle of winter… not much ‘help’ out there.
Biggest danger is ‘other cars’.
Mostly ‘local drivers’ going way faster than a ‘normal’ driver and passing in dangerous locations.
Best thing is just pay attention to your driving.
Going too slow ? Pull over where possible.
Worst road in the area ? Hwy 20.
Lots of head-on collisions on that road.
Driving is one of the most dangerous things we do …
Yes, pull over for the knucklehead that is in a rush to meet his maker.
I love 36. I love driving 45mph through the redwoods -and- I love pulling over for the yahoos. I go about 30mph up the grade since to floor it eats gas and ruins your engine … Unfortunately there’s not many places to allow the speedy ones around, but I do when I can.
36 is no worse than any other road driven by yahoos.
Thank you
If you knew someone who was killed on 36, then you think it’s pretty dangerous.
IMHO: People moving at over 5 mph are kinda ‘dangerous’. :>)
Like some of the members in my hiking group.
My husband is a very experienced driver has well over 25 years of driving commercially.. he did everything by the book and then some was barely going 15mph if that.. was in the lowest gear with his Jake’s all breaks just went . He did what all he could do..no never done drugs never had emotional damage and he wasn’t tired.. and no stress wasn’t a factor either . The truck always has something break down on it . Was not his fault.. he honked his horn to warn the flagger and she was able to raidio all the construction workers to get out of the way . Thank God no one else was hurt and that he only got a broken back and broken rib.. construction workers saw it all..wasn’t his fault.. shit happens.. I’m just thankful to God and the K rails that stopped the truck from going off the cliff. And thankful for the workers who helped my husband
I hope your husband heals quickly and recovers fully…
He sounds like a very hard worker…
Lucky, too…
