The Miller Fire, ignited by lightning on June 9, has grown to approximately 20 acres in the rugged landscape of western Trinity County, the U.S. Forest Service – Shasta-Trinity National Forest reported Tuesday evening.

Burning between South Fork Mountain and the South Fork of the Trinity River near Forest Road 1N24, the fire spread from 6 acres overnight amid short-range spotting and active fire behavior in dense brush, timber, and areas littered with snags. Firefighters have established a combination of dozer line and handline around the fire’s perimeter.

“Firefighter safety is our number one priority,” said Jason O’Bannon, Incident Commander on the Miller Fire. “This fire is burning in challenging terrain with a high density of snags, so we’re being methodical and deliberate in our tactics. Crews are making solid progress, and we’ll continue to have resources on the fire overnight to strengthen containment and protect nearby values at risk.”

The U.S. Forest Service emphasized that firefighters are adjusting tactics to address hazardous snags and the potential for rolling debris, all while ensuring the safety of personnel on the ground. Additional resources will remain engaged overnight to maintain progress and keep the fire from spreading further.
