Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Responds to Claims of Serial Killer Allegations from Local Woman

collage of photos and documents from the 1980's

Galina Trefil’s posted a public Facebook post, she encouraged others to share, that alleges her father, Dr. Jon Charles Trefil is a serial killer, with accompanying images of her father from decades ago. MCSO has responded saying that they have been investigating Trefil’s claims since 2023 and have yet to find conclusive evidence supporting her claims.

In a shocking and widely-shared social media post that has garnered over 13,000 shares and nearly 4,400 comments, Galina Trefil, a resident of Mendocino County, made a bold claim that her father, Dr. Jon Charles Trefil, is a serial killer. Trefil alleges that her father not only confessed to multiple murders over a span of decades but also provided detailed accounts of his crimes, including descriptions of his victims and burial sites. She stated that authorities have been aware of his confessions for years but have failed to act on them.

According to Trefil’s post, her father—now 86 years old—has admitted to killing individuals across several states, including California, Illinois, and Virginia, as well as countries like Canada and France. Trefil also claims that her father was involved in a network of other serial killers. She further states that he has been asking for police to investigate the burial sites where his victims were allegedly placed, but that law enforcement has not followed through despite her efforts to provide evidence and witness statements.

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) issued a press release on March 17, 2025, confirming that they had been investigating the allegations since early 2023. According to Captain Quincy Cromer, the Sheriff’s Office has been aware of the claims for over a year, including detailed reports from Trefil’s daughter, interviews, and materials such as recordings and journal entries allegedly from Jon Trefil himself. The MCSO has been working with law enforcement agencies in other jurisdictions where Trefil is said to have committed crimes, but according to their investigation, Trefil’s DNA did not match any evidence linked to unsolved murders.

“While we take these allegations very seriously, it’s important to clarify that, after extensive investigation, there is no conclusive evidence to substantiate the claims that Jon Trefil is responsible for a series of unsolved murders,” Captain Cromer stated. “DNA analysis of evidence related to an unsolved 1970s murder in Mendocino County did not match Trefil’s DNA. Additionally, extensive searches of properties and cabins linked to him, including those in Comptche, yielded no evidence of human remains or murder sites.”

The Sheriff’s Office also clarified that they had examined the diaries and journals that Trefil’s daughter claimed contained confessions, but investigators did not find any direct admissions of murder. Despite the lack of physical evidence supporting the claims of multiple murders, the Sheriff’s Office continues to look into any credible leads and is open to receiving information from the public.

Trefil’s allegations suggest more victims may exist and questions whether additional investigations could uncover new evidence.* In her post, she implored others who may have information about her father’s crimes, particularly survivors or potential witnesses, to come forward to law enforcement.

“At this point, we need the public’s help to solve these cases,” said Trefil in her post. “My father has admitted to his crimes. He wants to tell his story. He has been asking for the police to investigate. It is time for the truth to come out.”

In response, Captain Cromer emphasized the Sheriff’s Office’s commitment to investigating all credible leads. “We are dedicated to ensuring justice for victims of unsolved crimes, and we will continue to follow the evidence wherever it leads,” he stated. “At this time, no further action is being taken against Jon Trefil, given his health status and the lack of corroborating evidence.”

Anyone with information related to these allegations is encouraged to contact the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office at 707-463-4086 or provide anonymous tips to 707-234-2100.

Press release from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office:

On 03/14/2025, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office learned about social media posts where the subject alleged her father is a serial killer. The social media posts state the alleged serial killer is Jon Charles Trefil.

This situation was reported to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office in January of 2023 after Trefil’s daughter reported to other local and regional law enforcement of her suspicions that her father is a serial killer.

Based on the referrals from other law enforcement agencies, Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Detectives spoke with an advocate of Trefil’s daughter, who also assisted in interviewing Trefil about his alleged crimes. Recordings, scanned journals, and other investigative materials were shared with the Sheriff’s Office who conducted investigations into the claims. Investigators met with Trefil’s daughter in February of 2023, who said her father spoke about murdering several people from the 1970s trough the 1990s. Trefil’s daughter also provided a lengthy written statement to Detectives, which was retained as evidence.

As Trefil, his daughter, and the advocate spent time together, Trefil’s daughter said her father spoke about these killings and the daughter began researching unsolved murders in Mendocino County. Trefil’s daughter suspected her father was responsible for a murder in the 1970s in Mendocino County, which she specifically questioned her father about.  Per Trefil’s daughter, Trefil ultimately admitted to the unsolved murder in Mendocino County in the 1970s. Detectives also obtained pictures, copies of journal entries, and recordings from the meetings between Trefil, his daughter, and the advocate.

To further investigate the unsolved murder from the 1970s in Mendocino County, Detectives researched that case and compared the information provided by Trefil’s daughter to the facts of the case. Detectives learned there were numerous evidentiary items that were submitted for DNA analysis in 2006 to the Department of Justice, which resulted in an unknown male DNA source from the analyzed evidence. Detectives determined there were some consistencies in the information provided by Trefil’s daughter and the unsolved homicide case from the 1970s so they sought a warrant to obtain Trefil’s DNA for comparison to the evidentiary items sent for testing.

In May of 2023, the search warrant was authorized by a Judge in Mendocino County to obtain a DNA sample from Trefil for comparison to the DNA profile from the evidence items in the unsolved homicide from the 1970s. The DNA sample from Trefil was submitted to the California Department of Justice Bureau of Forensic Services and ultimately uploaded to the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).

In 2023, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office received reports from the California Department of Justice regarding the comparison of Trefil’s DNA profile to the evidence in the unsolved murder case from the 1970s. Trefil’s DNA did not match the unknown male contributor DNA profile from the unsolved 1970s murder investigation. The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office was also informed by DOJ that Trefil’s DNA profile was uploaded into CODIS for routine and regular comparisons to DNA profiles uploaded from unsolved cases. As of the publication of this press release, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office has never been informed of Trefil’s DNA profile being a match or potential match to any evidentiary items submitted to CODIS.

Information from Trefil’s daughter also alleged her father buried numerous people he murdered at a cabin in Comptche, CA. The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office searched the property and cabin and were unable to locate any evidence to substantiate these claims or of possible human remains or burial sites on the property in Comptche.

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office is aware that Trefil’s daughter referenced other serial killers identified by her father, but these inferences were not substantiated by Detectives. The Sheriff’s Office has been unable to substantiate the claims of the other individuals alleged to be serial killers or their involvement with homicides in Mendocino County.

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office has examined the scanned copies of Trefil’s diaries and journals, but did not locate any expressed confessions to any murders.

Trefil’s daughter informed the Sheriff’s Office she submitted her DNA and Trefil’s DNA to genealogical / ancestry sites, but the Sheriff’s Office has never been informed of any investigative leads from these efforts or from other agencies investigating these claims.

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office has and will continue to investigate crimes associated with Trefil or allegations that he was a serial killer in Mendocino County. The Sheriff’s Office has not interviewed Trefil directly regarding these allegations due to his fragile medical state and information provided by his family that he will not cooperate with law enforcement. When legally justified and supported by probable cause, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office will continue to investigate this matter.

Anyone with information regarding this investigation is requested to contact the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office at 707-463-4086 (option 1). Information can also be provided anonymously by calling the non-emergency tip line at 707-234-2100.

“No conclusive evidence” and “No direct admissions of guilt” is not exactly a declaration of innocence — but if the alleged perp wants the truth to come out they should have been able to find one body or one DNA match — or is this a case of a troubled child manipulating her senile parent?

Kandeda Trefil — Dr Trefils wife and Galinas mother — turned me in to the FBI for being the Unbomber. The FBI visited and questioned me about 2 months before they caught Kaczynski. Needless to say, I dont go around blowing people up — or harming people at all (or animals). The FBI agents were very polite and professional. I told Sheriff Craver about this incident and he was horrified someone would think I was the Unabomber.

Its my opinion that the Trefil family has their own world view and approach to reality. This may diverge greatly from that of others.

One thing I will say I believe there has been a serial killer in Humboldt for decades uncaught. Is it this guy who knows. Cops get false confessions to high profile murders all the time but again this guy might be weird enough to actually do it, confess to it but give false info just to make the cops jump. Serial killers love to taunt the cops sometimes ie Zodiak Killer.

That is the wonderful thing about the science of DNA. They are solving so many crimes from the 1970’s which would have not been solved otherwise. Who knows what is going on with the family dynamics, but DNA does not lie …

What a shitty daughter. Even if he was a serial killer, family first. Wait till the 86 year old guy croaks, then spill it.

He’s pretty old and there’s a lot of forest, water, ocean out there. Memory can be tricky. Could have truth to it, maybe not. Positive is that they now have his DNA. So… we wait.

A network of other serial killers??? Nope. Not credible. Serial killers generally work alone or with a close, trusted ally (Think Hillside Strangler). They don’t have a freaking clubhouse. They don’t have websites, although a few serial killers have been known to anonymously post about their crimes on the Dark Web… something most people don’t access and most of those posts are akin to snuff porn. Making the claim that this man was in contact with some kind of serial killer network in mostly pre-Internet days is just fucking ludicrous.

Probly crazy stories…maybe. Remember that one time where the guy’s brother had talked him into turning himself in…so he goes to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office and they tell him he’s fos and to get out. So he goes home to his fridge and goes back with a breast he cut off one of his victims, slaps it on the counter and tells them ” Hey! I said I’ve been killing people! Lots of them! And eating them!!” Ha ha that HCSO trying to avoid any work all the time, what a bunch of clowns…
Also that woman who escaped from Christie and ran screaming to the sheriff. They told her to get lost you’re crazy. Years later they find out he was chaining up women in a redwood stump and killing them. Oops!! Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office making Barney Fife look like a genius ha ha ha

There was a boy named Steven Stayner who was abducted out of Yosemite in the early 80’s. The man who did it was named Kenneth Parnell. He took Stayner to many locations and sex trafficked him to men for many yrs. Steven was held in cabins in Westport, Comptche and a trailer in Point Arena. He also attended school in Point Arena as he was so under mind control he called Kenneth Parnell his dad. Kenneth Parnell snatched another child when Steven was a teenager which triggered Steven to run away in the night with the small child and hitch a ride to Ukiah police station where he walked in and said the statement, “my name is Steven”. Which was also the name of a movie made of Steven’s life and abduction. Steven Stayner’s brother yrs later became the Yosemite killer and killed girls and women in the Yosemite area.
The interesting thing about this women’s article is that it mentions the same places as well as on organized sex trafficking ring that has been identified to exist in this area as well as victims statements about children taken to Bohemian Grove, Guerneville and remote cabins in Sonoma, Mendocino and Humboldt.
There was a man who was a very high ranking general and C.I.A. psychological warfare for military intelligence officer as well as the founder of the church of Set and an self proclaimed Satanist who was often seen appearing on talk shows such as Donahue, Geraldo etc promoting Satanism. He was arrested and questioned many times for sex trafficking children and raping them at the Presido in San Fransico. There are victim testimonies and accounts of him also being at cabins in Westport, Comptche, Point Arena and he was a regular at Bohemian Grove and a card carrying member of the Bohemian Club as well as a 33 degree Freemason.
Whether this women is telling the truth or not she has touched a cord that triggers me as a citizen detective.
Maybe the local police are hiding or protecting powerful ppl involved in some very disgusting and horrific things. After the Epstien scandal and now P. Diddy it would not surprise me one bit.
Just food for thought of course.

The Generals name is Michael Aquino and you can go and research all of this yourself. It is all documented and verified in his Wikipedia as well as witnesses testimony and police reports involving the accounts. Go to Yandex.com to research as they have more information then google. Google protects these type of ppl for some reason. There were many books written about Steven Stayner as well as a few movies made about him. Steven Stayners brother was Kerry Stayner and you can research his murders in Yosemite as well. Don’t trust me, please, please go and research for yourself. You will find some very scary and unsettling truths.

One of the families that suffered at Kerry Stayner’s hand was a local Eureka family. Good people. Terrible story. Crazy coincidence with the 2 Stayner brothers. One abducted, one a murderer….Many sickos find sidekicks who share their murderous hobbies w them and we have had more than our fair share of serial ( 3+) murderers in our local counties. Maybe this daughter is nuts but I wouldn’t brush aside her stories so quickly…Old burials are hard to find. Memories fade…but serial killers keep killing. They are out there right now, maybe looking in your window right now from the dark woods…..BOO!!!!

I see people ridiculing your post so I’m just here to say that I also remember the facts as you posted. You are simply making truthful statements. There are very evil people and sometimes they find each other and collude in their sick behavior. I’m not being a conspiracy nut. I appreciate your comment. I remember the Staynor story well and little Stephen was a hero for stepping up and saving the new little kid. Child sex trafficking does exist and it involves groups of sick evil people working together…I don’t think murder is much different than what they do and so I won’t discount the idea of murderers working together either. MOST serial killers work alone as Cranky Old Lady said above. But not all. Think of gang or mob killings…3 killings defines you as a “serial killer”. And those guys work in groups, relay info, etc.
There is evil in these remote locations. Because evil people go there…

Thank you. Steven’s case was very interesting to me and as a child I remember his face on the milk cartons as well as missing person fliers all over the area and I wanted to focus on that because in the women’s accounts she specifically named the cabins in Comptche and Westport which I know for a fact were heavily documented in the Stayner case, were a few chapters in the book and also a focal point in the documentary and the t.v. movie. I also know from pouring through tons of news paper clipping, victims testimony and researching Michael Aquino he was also in this area admittedly and him and his wife had a cabin in Comptche and claimed Westport was on of their favorite places in California in his memoir. He was very close friends with Anton Lavey who was head and founder of the church of Satan and they wrote manuscripts on the harvesting of adrenochrome as well as torture and mind control techniques. I suggest everyone if you can handle it, go and research Michael Aquino, his connections to high level secret government programs all ran in this area and Bohemian Grove, his connections to Hollywood, his satanic memoirs, his connection to the Zodiac Killer, the highly documented cases of child sex trafficking under and around the Presido Day Care, San Francisco, Westport, Comptche, Hollywood, Washington D.C. as well as underground military bases in Dulce New Mexico, Apache Mountain and Canada. He was very actively promoting Satanism on talk shows, in books, magazines etc. He had his own Satanic church called the Church of Set that he founded. Go and see for yourselves what is and has been happening all around us.

I just looked up Michael Aquino and he is one freaky looking man and his Wikipedia is extremely scary. I do remember seeing him on talk shows back in the day. Why would the military make a Satanist a 5 star general??? His Wikipedia says he has several charges brought against him and he was never convicted. I think you are on to something here. Very scary stuff. I got chills just looking up a few things.

I’ve seen interviews w/ that general, he was very involved w/ mk ultra. It all circulated around a daycare in the presidio busted for sexual abuse. some of the children were able to correctly describe the interior of the generals home, He was super creepy looking, you wouldn’t think he would be able to be in the military and look so creepy. i cant remember if it was donahue or geraldo.. I know bits and pieces of the creepy underworld, mostly surrounding eureka…law enforcement definitely helps to hide and protect the secrets of certain individuals!

The pictures she has of the concrete bunker it would be interesting if someone could find that said concrete bunker. Other thing is after this amount of time a lot of DNA is lost. Degraded Beyond evaluation. If even one person was murdered at the hands of her father that’s worth investigating or figuring it out. Mendocino County is not always the most aggressive in investigation tactics.

Agreed there’s quite a few very serious cases that have some pretty obvious resolutions that have never been addressed. Multiple tips have been dropped multiple times and the response is much of the same like above oh we’ve checked it out we can’t find anything.

I think it definitely goes deeper then that. Mendocino county and Humboldt is where young cops are trained and that is a major factor but reading the article and then reading the comments it is obvious that citizens have uncovered way to many “coincidences” that should definitely be explored. Just the facts of the Stayner case, this women’s accounts of the Comptche and Westport cabins and other areas and Mr. Aquino owning cabins in the same exact areas as well triggers my spidey senses. Those are very small areas and not even really on most maps. I do not believe in coincidence and there are way to many red flags here for someone not at least investigate. Just as Anonymous said, who are they protecting??? Very concerning and intriguing. I just watched the YouTube video posted on the other page about the kid who went to Murder Mountain again. It reminds us all again the hundreds of unsolved missing persons cases. Why is nothing ever being done and no cases are ever solved. It really makes you wander….
