North Coast Braces as Federal Funding Freeze Threatens Schools, Healthcare, and Emergency Services

At a recent roundtable hosted by Congressman Jared Huffman, local leaders detailed the devastating consequences these cuts are having on their communities. Huffman has also launched a website where constituents can report how the funding freezes have impacted them.
“We have never seen anything like it, and we are still scrambling to understand the scope and the legality and the implications of all of these different orders,” said Congressman Huffman.
The executive orders signed by President Trump aim to halt federal funding for programs involving diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as anything related to climate change or the “green new deal.” This has sent shockwaves through rural communities in Huffman’s district, which rely heavily on these federal dollars.
Education leaders warned that school funding shortfalls could leave vulnerable students without critical resources. Michael Davies Hughes, Superintendent of Humboldt County Office of Education, highlighted the potential loss of Title One funding, stating that “if there are impacts to Title One, that would have a devastating effect on our most vulnerable students in the county.” Many of these students come from low-income families and rely on school programs for meals, transportation, and additional academic support.
Jeff Harris from Del Norte County Unified School District echoed these concerns, adding that “every dollar that goes away because of a lack of federal funding is $1 that comes out locally. We just can’t sustain that.” Rural districts like those in Del Norte and Humboldt serve students in remote areas where resources are already limited, making these cuts particularly harmful.

Trinity County students are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of a federal funding freeze, as the county relies heavily on Secure Rural Schools funding, which supports education in areas with a majority of federal forest lands. [Photo of Weaverville Elementary School students from the Trinity Office of Education social media page.]
Jamie Greene from the Trinity Alps School District echoed these concerns, stating that the loss of Secure Rural Schools funding alone would be devastating. “It will literally take the wheels off our busses in our district, because we lose $600,000 and have five to six layoffs that we’ll have to do in March. It’s 23% of our county road department budget, just Secure Rural Schools,” Greene explained. The program, established to offset the decline in timber revenues from federal lands, is crucial for rural areas like theirs. Without it, schools and vital local services such as road maintenance face significant financial strain, affecting both education and community infrastructure.
The potential cuts to mental health funding are also a major worry for the region. Greene explained, “We got a mental health grant that we wrote for Siskiyou, Modoc and Trinity counties.” Without this critical funding, Greene warned, “that’s going to put us right back to everything being telehealth.”

Childcare providers are bracing for severe impacts as well. Carrie Venegas from Changing Tides stated, “We’re talking about some of our most vulnerable kids. Just in Humboldt County alone, there was over $8.3 million that went out in childcare.” Many working families depend on subsidized childcare programs to remain employed, and without these services, parents may be forced to leave their jobs or seek alternative, potentially lower-quality care arrangements.
Senior services are facing existential threats, with some organizations at risk of complete shutdown. Maggie Craft from Area One Agency on Aging issued a dire warning: “If this is resolved badly, then we’ll all be gone. If this is resolved after April, we just won’t be here, if that makes any sense, because we don’t have the money to go past April.” Thousands of seniors in Humboldt and Del Norte counties depend on the agency for in-home support services, meal deliveries, and transportation assistance, all of which could disappear if funding is not restored.

The freeze is also affecting employment opportunities. A local resident, who had applied for a director position at a regional arts and culture organization, shared their experience of having a scheduled interview canceled at the last minute. “The representative explained they were nervous about their funding streams continuing after one of the Executive Orders signed by the President would cease support for the arts, libraries, and museums. The organization has decided not to hire an employee at this time.” The resident expressed frustration, noting that the job market now looks bleaker than ever.
Supporters of the funding freeze, however, argue that the cuts are necessary to curb government spending and refocus federal resources on national priorities. President Trump has emphasized that the freeze is essential for reducing wasteful spending and ensuring taxpayer dollars are used effectively. At a finance conference in Miami, Trump stated that the United States is now “prepared for business” and that halting excessive government expenditures is a crucial step in stabilizing the economy.
Legal battles continue to unfold as multiple lawsuits challenge the legality of the freeze. A federal judge recently issued a temporary injunction against halting certain grant payments, arguing that the administration lacks the authority to unilaterally suspend funding agreements. However, the administration maintains that contractual provisions permit such actions.
Despite some court rulings temporarily reinstating funds, it remains uncertain whether and when these funds will be fully released, and if they will arrive in time to prevent the collapse of what many see as critical services.
To help document the local impacts, Congressman Huffman has set up a website where constituents can report how the funding freezes have affected them.

So people are upset that the government is no longer taking other people’s money and giving it to them. Remember when community support didn’t all come from Uncle Sam? Yea me neither but thats the way it used to be until we all started to believe that this was normal and money grew on trees.
Give a person something and they will become entitled to it in about 30 seconds.

Snitch.
If I said what I really think about today’s comments Kym would ban me.
Ya same here this is fake news she is just another poor loser
trump is my president how about u write a article that doesn’t fit ur agenda
This is more scare tactics by the left.
Wow how the culture has changed. I remember when a snitch was someone who ratted out their neighbor for growing pot, not somebody who points out the government waste of our taxes and wrongdoing.
We’ve hit a new low folks!
We should encourage the children to turn in their parents for observed waste, fraud, or abuse!
Snitch
We need to call daily to have Gruesome Newsom investigated and all the California politicians thrown in jail for robbing us blind and making our state the laughing stock of the world and the schools and colleges destroying the minds our children. 163 billion dollars unaccounted for just on one light rail project and Newsom who makes 140,000 a yr just paid 9 million cash for a mansion!!!! I want to see him in prison with Huffman, Schiff, Pelosi and all the other criminals destroying California.
Well i guess you could call this ”misinformation” because it is one sided, and opinionated. All doom and gloom. Let the unaborted babies go without food, and all.
But no, this is just that, misinformation. Take a look at some other source of information. Like Gateway, and Fox, and Breitbart. Give them an honest read. I grant you there is some conservative spin, but look beyond that. See what Trump is accomplishing. Know you have been a victim of the socialist left progressives.
Why don’t you want to rake the forest?
Because natives didn’t. They did burn some ground. They had no way to control wild fire. Nature takes its course. However, we are living in nature, and may need to reduce fuels around structures and roads. Show me where President Trump and Mr. Musk are shutting down this program………
…….shutting down this program….
Dude, you seriously need to read the articles. Because it’s right in it:
“Nick Pape described the halt of a $6.2 million Shelter Cove Community Wildfire Defense Grant, a critical project aimed at protecting homes from catastrophic wildfires. Due to the funding freeze, work has been halted on fuel reduction treatments for 160 homes,”
I bolded the important part for you incase you missed it on first read.
Reading (or thinking) before commenting isn’t really Mr. C’s forte.
Not my home! Oh yeah- that’s because my neighbor and I are doing it ourselves. Not getting paid from OUR tax money. Just our chainsaws and brush piles into trailers and unloaded onto the burn pile. Yup- it takes work…Imagine that!
I busted my ass to clear my Sonoma County property of flammable greenery. Here’s what I learned after fire took my home. When wind in a fires are over 50-mph brush clearing is practically useless. Practically useless.
You know what would stop flying embers? Hempcrete construction.
I clear around my own home
The high winds could give a shit.
That’s why you soak down your structures every morning during a fire. I’ve been through quite a few of them, never evacuated and never lost a life or structure.
How DARE you rely on yourself and not the government to protect you!!
That’s $38,750 per home. Seems pricey. Could it be done for less?
Guess what, it’s another Mr. Clark comment that’s just blatantly false.
this will work. use wisely.
“Some conservative spin”? If it’s on Breitbart or Fox, it’s pure fabrication, created by the New Church of Trump.
Don’t be ridiculous.
You have zero credibility when it comes to assessing the truthfulness of media.
Incorrect. Fox is rated number one for a reason.
Yeah, cuz it’s social valium for angry bitter whites. On Fox, you’re a victim of the woke left until proven otherwise.
Stupid AND racist.
What a surprise.
Not really a surprise at all, Fox has been that way for a long time.
You ignored my valid point that Fox News has been rated number one in all the polls for decades now using the worn out angry bitter whites bigoted argument again. And you wonder why your party lost the election. You’re all stuck on hate and negativity.
Fox News has been rated number one in the ratings for 22 consecutive years, according to Nielsen data. It has consistently ranked first in total day and prime-time viewership, as well as in the key 25-54 demo.
Let’s all help President Trump MAGA and start with cutting some of the obvious waste and fraud.
Why don’t we start by getting rid of the Convicted Felon? Your mom taught you that felons are something to aspire to be? No, Democrats nor Liberals found Trump guilty. A jury of Trumps peers, agreed to by BOTH sides picked the jurors. Trump is a Convicted Felon. You support a Convicted Felon. There is nothing American or Patriotic about that. Then you complain about illegal immigrants. We have Elon Musk. A ‘special’ guy that came to this country illegally. He was afforded the luxury of being allowed to stay to earn his citizenship. Why? Trump is telling law-abiding, tax-paying American citizens that they are not ok or allowed to serve their country. Not his place. Separation of Chirch and State, not to mention my tax dollars are still being taken. America is the Land of the Free, not only Free for those that agree with my lifestyle. You may be ok with a Nazi immigrant that came here illegally running things, but I am not. Man up and have a little respect for your country. Stop spitting on it. 4 years of LETS GO BRANDON, STOP THE STEAL and BIDENOMICS. Now all the sudden Trump has no control over grocery or gas prices. You guys are in a Godless cult and I personally cannot wait for the Jonestown like ending in 4 years. I’ll pray for you. ????
“special” guy…. I think you mean neurologically divergent. btw, it is not kosher to make fun of a persons disabilities.
Misinformation and you just listed top 3 of them.
Confirmation bias is a lucrative business model.
I also long for the good old days before the government started using the income tax to steal our money — it got worse in 1936 with Social Security which is another wealth redistribution scene and it’s gotten progressively worse ever since!
People need to start practicing personal responsibility — plan better if you don’t wanna be hungry and cold when you get old — and don’t have kids if you can’t care for them — time to end food stamps and healthcare for families that can’t make ends meet — teach the kids early not to rely on the government for every little thing!
That’s probably swinging the pendulum a little to far
And remember:
Never rehire a person who you have previously fired.
He might hold a grudge and attempt to destroy your systems…
Well .. that’s what happens…unfortunately. We always overcorrect..
big project, there’s gonna be some mistakes.
The rich are playing you for a fool. Why carry water for them?
Why carry water for anyoneu?
?make it make sense
Politicians, corporations, have played us ALL for fools. I’m so glad someone is attempting to clean this crap up. I really love that we get daily updates that aren’t b.s. and word salad , and teleprompter reading.
So if musk is really worth 400 billion, then wrap your head around this: if he lives another 40 years he’d have to spend $27,350,000 per DAY to actually enjoy his wealth. That’s over 1 million per HOUR. Taxing a rich weirdo like that would relieve quite a bit of burden for a family of four working two jobs, earning $100,000. That wealth of his has accumulated from somewhere. If you pay taxes, and he gets government contracts, that’s your money he’s hording.
Here’s a thought. Get off your ass and work hard enough to earn billions. Then you can donate it to all these causes. Musk has all the freedoms you do. What is stopping you from making billions just like he does?
Musk’s dad had a emerald mine
how many are born on even 1st base
to deny this reality means you are not a serious person
Is that supposed to mean something? I know people with gold mines, it doesn’t mean they’re rich. Mining is some of the hardest work you can do.
Musk hasn’t worked a day in his life.
More lies.
Nope — I merely stated opinions albeit with a touch of sarcasm — not only do you fail at reading comprehension your sarcasm detector is also broken.
To be fair, unless folks are familiar with what commenters have what views…your comment isn’t that far from what some commenters advocate.
Fair enough but except for those blinded by bias there are obvious signs it’s sarcasm — but it’s very revealing that some people took it seriously and agreed with it — how bitter and hateful must they be to support depriving children of food and healthcare?
100% anger
100% bitterness
100% petty
100% frail
100% morons
And that’s maga.
Try not to speak for me or what I did or didn’t read nor make assumptions.
Sorry not sorry — try to refrain from falsely calling me a liar — but if you do don’t be surprised if I answer back.
Do you even know what the Social Security funds are. At one time there was more money in that account than any account the government had. It was set up from people’s retirement. They take 15% of your income for that purpose, retirement. And that money was STOLEN after the Vietnam War because they (the government) had drained the general fund. So now they still take that 15% and call us freeloaders. That was all done by the democrats ?
Do I know what Social Security funds are?
Ha, ha!
Come back when you’re ready to have an adult conversation.
“Starting in 1969 (due to action by the Johnson Administration in 1968) the transactions to the Trust Fund were included in what is known as the “unified budget.” This means that every function of the federal government is included in a single budget. This is sometimes described by saying that the Social Security Trust Funds are “on-budget.” This budget treatment of the Social Security Trust Fund continued until 1990 when the Trust Funds were again taken “off-budget.” This means only that they are shown as a separate account in the federal budget. But whether the Trust Funds are “on-budget” or “off-budget” is primarily a question of accounting practices–it has no effect on the actual operations of the Trust Fund itself.”
“When Social Security runs a deficit—meaning it pays out more in benefits than it collects in taxes—it must redeem these bonds to cover the shortfall. The federal government then has to come up with the cash to honor these IOUs, either by raising taxes, cutting spending in other areas, or borrowing more money. Thus, the Trust Fund does not contain real, liquid assets but rather a promise that the government will pay itself back, which ultimately depends on the federal budget’s overall health and fiscal policy.”
“Rising interest costs are the result of the large underlying mismatch between revenues and program spending, which is due primarily to tax cuts enacted over the last 25 years that have resulted in revenues lagging behind the cost of public services, like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, that are broadly supported by the public. This mismatch has necessitated greater borrowing, and higher interest rates have increased the cost of that borrowing.«

Remember ss was supposed to be a safety net not a persons complete retirement plan . I guess for those that always wish to barely scrape by depending on a safety net would be the way to go . However one would think people would want something better from life.
I’m sure that you will be first to help out the less fortunate, the children who have no caring parents, the hungry when they knock on your door for food. That would be the community support of which you speak, and it is wonderful to know that you will be leading the charge in these endeavors.
Not our responsibility
?
this is who we are, murkins
selfish coddled toddlers
You have the freedom to leave this terrible place
The burden has been shifted to the working class. Right after WWII we had a more progressive tax structure where the burden was paid by the richest. The vast majority of wealth in this country is inherited, not earned through any type of labor. Tax it. Right now if you and your partner work two jobs and pay rent you pay 30% of your income in taxes. The wealthier you are, the more crazy tax loopholes you can find. Don’t want to be taxed in California? Leave your Malibu mansion now and then and stay at your apartment in Manhattan, or the “cabin” in Jackson Hole. I qualify for MediCal and paid more personal income tax than Donald Trump. It’s not a conservative or liberal thing. Gavin Newsome’s wealth is inherited from his dad who was a wealth manager for the Getty family. Their “job” is avoiding taxes and investing inherited wealth. Meanwhile using our firefighting resources, natural resources, federal airports for private jets, highways for expensive cars, etc…
The wealthy, non-productive class should pay more.
there aren’t enough of them to cover the debt, much less support the economy the government got us into.
I seriously doubt you have paid more federal taxes than donald trump . Percentage wise maybe but not dollar amount . Also have you provided half the number of job to others than he has ? You state you qualify for medical do you think the wealthy use as many public services as those whom are not wealthy ? Are trumps children attending public schools ? Or even his grandchildren children ?. Does any one in his family use public transportation ? Receive welfare grants for college workforce training ? Any of the number of federal funded programs that support possibly your children ? Donald trump would like to end federal income tax for everyone but that means people will have to learn how to support themselves and not rely upon the government taking money from 100 people to cover one persons needs . If you are not wise enough to spend your earnings properly then why should others have to spend their money so you can live how you want ? General wealth is created and passed on and is taxed however , somewhere in the history of that wealth someone made sacrifices to build that wealth and that should be rewarded , for many that reward is in the knowledge that their heirs will never have to worry about money . While others spend their money as quickly as they get it many people attempt to save to be able to pass it on to their families , as is their right , they saved instead of spent and now you are upset because no one in your family cared enough about their heirs to save to leave your family with anything and now you are throwing your fit about it instead of attempting to create wealth to pass on to your family meaning that your children will not be set up like other peoples children have been and so they too will throw a fit and complain yet the blame is not placed on the people that deserve it
Trump taxes:
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/29/us/trump-750-taxes.html
& Warren Buffet pointed out his secretary paid more in income tax than he did.
Trump started with a $200,000 a year allowance at age two. Tough stuff.
And your point is ? People should look at what they have not what other people have , you sound bitter and jealous , yet i bet you have yet to consider the what you could do to help set up your family once you are gone . Someone will always have more or better . Were you that kid that always complained because a sibling got a extra cookie ?
Hey, keep this about ideas.
Sure idea number one try to be happy with what you have . Number 2 if you cant be happy with what you have work harder spend wise until you have enough to be happy .
idea number 3 try to worry less about what other people have or had and focus on what you want and how you can get it , set make a plan and set goals , you 2 can become wealthy and happy
I doubt you actually believe you paid more income taxes than Trump.
This pro-taxes brainwash may sound virtuous, but its total nonsense when you actually look at the data. The top 50% pay 98% of all taxes.
If you actually cared about the working class and taxes, you be advocating for bottom half to pay less, that actually helps them, other people paying more keeps the working class in the same exact spot, if not worse.
https://taxfoundation.org/data/all/federal/latest-federal-income-tax-data-2024/
Wizard of huh? Do you actually think trumps tax bill is legit?
Yes and Thank You for saying this
Man, this article is so slanted it’s practically falling over. It hits you right off the bat with how Trump’s funding cuts are supposedly wrecking California’s North Coast—schools, healthcare, seniors, the works. Barely mentions why the cuts are even happening until way down the page, and even then, it’s just a quick “oh, something about government spending” before diving back into doom and gloom. All the “devastating” and “existential threat” talk feels like it’s trying to guilt-trip you into agreeing.
They only talk to people who hate the cuts—local bigwigs, school folks, and that Huffman guy (who even gets a shoutout for his website). Trump’s side? One little blurb about “wasteful spending” and that’s it. No one’s asking why we’re drowning in a $36 trillion deficit or if California’s fat budget could cover some of this. Just a parade of sad stories—kids, old folks, firefighters—like the world’s ending.
And what’s with skipping the real debate? They hint these cuts hit DEI and climate stuff but won’t say why—like, maybe Trump’s crew thinks it’s a waste? You don’t have to agree, but at least explain it. Instead, it’s all “shockwaves” and that cheesy “wildfires don’t care” line, taking cheap shots at Trump instead of digging in.
I’m not saying the cuts don’t hurt, but this is so one-sided it feels like a propaganda piece. Anyone else catch that vibe?
Sure, but I think what everyone is upset about is how quickly these cuts have come, virtually without warning, and without nearly enough time to set up alternate funding. Taking the sledgehammer approach with people and communities livelihood is the issue. I think most Americans agree the government wastes our money, and we all want that to stop. It’s just the approach comes across as unAmerican.
this is terrorism
this is scaring a whole lot of the population
for TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH
and still you fools think this isn’t going to affect you in any way cuz you’re so
INDEPENDENT
Please explain how the rich benefit from these cuts
You can’t tax the poors much more. You want a balanced budget? The logical place to tax is the people who have more income than they can spend in a lifetime.
Well, might backfire a bit since the richest pull down more in corporate subsidies than the Normals. Over the last 70 years the greater tax burden shifted to the middle class. We built the Federal highway system with tax money, we built the airports that Amazon uses. Now it’s time to maintain them the wealthy are all in Monaco. Or flying over your crumbling commuter bridge in their private jet. You: fired for being late.
It’s more like the rich can survive the cuts better.
The logical action is to quit spending money on ridiculous nonsense.
like food stamps, HUD and medicine for poor people
you got yours eh?
and your social security check……..
Always “tax the rich” instead of SPEND LESS.
People like you must live in constant credit card debt
Credit card debt is a good example of one of the mechanism of wealth transfer. From you to them. People like me have zero credit card debt.
Spend less applies to Mars tourism and F-35s, and Trumps Superbowl trip. That trip to the gladiator games cost about three times the total money already approved for Shelter Cove.
That IS the thing to pay attention to. The impending tax cuts for the wealthy. These cuts are just to reduce the deficit enough to pass that tax bill. Some cuts by themselves might make sense ..and yeah there’s gonna be pain. But the Dems kept us borrowing to push a false economy…
I agree that these “savings” are going to be used to offset tax cuts for the rich. Let’s see if they give 20% back to us tax payers.
It’s not just the approach — the intent isn’t to reform government and cut waste but to dismantle government — I agree it’s also being done with unseemly haste — to the degree it’s inflicting genuine harm on people and endangering national security — but Elon and his team are heartless technocrats and couldn’t care less about the suffering of others.
President Trump and the DOGE team are talking about giving 20% of the money saved from the cuts to the waste in the federal government back to the 73 million tax-paying households in America in the form of a tax rebate direct payment to the tune of about $5000. Sounds American to me.
Yeah sure Trump is a really honest guy. Not a scammer, shammer or blowhard at all! Yay!!
I wish they would just pay down the debt with the dollars instead of passing out checks, that’s part of the problem to begin with.
So fat the cuts amount to $11 per household.
That number is based on trimming the full 2 trillion! Not a fucking chance
Why give it back? Pay down the f’ing debt. We will all pay for that either way.
Much of that is debt owed to other countries, like China. And we know how much Trump likes giving money to other countries. Or paying his own bills. Maybe he can float that idea one CEO said the other day about giving it back to citizens as a dividend. It has to go somewhere. Use it or lose it right?
I would tend to agree with you, but not while the cash printing press is still hot. There are so many American dollars floating around in the world that nobody can keep track of them. It’s the most fundamental job of our government to keep track of how much money it prints and where it goes. Since our government has proven incompetent at doing that, it should be illegal to print any more money, or our government should at least start removing money from circulation and destroying it(that would bring down inflation faster than anything since inflation is caused by an expansion of money supply). Our government will do neither of those things, until that happens, the root cause of our debt remains, therefore I will take my $5000 please. So c’mon Musk, cut that fat!
sounds like another lie and the dismantling of SS to me
Dismantling social security would be a dream come true! Gut it, send everyone a big one time check, and shut it down. I could do a lot better job with the 15% that’s taken out of my wallet than the government could.
I would rather have functioning public schools in my county than a one-time tax rebate. And I’ll believe it when I see it.
Does your county have functioning public schools now? If so, where do you live?
Functioning public schools? The ship sailed on that decades ago. We’re rated #48 in education, as far as developed countries go, that’s bottom of the barrel. I know, there are 140 other countries or so, but those places are the 3rd world, we’re literally competing against places like Ethiopia, Pakistan, and Nicaragua at this point. Being number 48 in education is like a kid saying he’s not the slowest person in class because he can outrun the one morbidly obese kid that can’t run.
If the government is a community’s livelihood, that community was destined not to make it from the get-go.
They have? Show some data. What got shut down?
I am only seeing identifying of corruption and unexplained money distribution, waste, and incompetence.
Bullshit. As usual.
DOGE discovered $2 billion in taxpayer funds set aside for a fledgling nonprofit linked to perennial Georgia Democratic candidate Stacey Abrams.
The Environmental Protection Agency under the Biden administration awarded Power Forward Communities the grant in April 2024 as part of the agency’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund program. Power Forward Communities received the green energy grant despite the fact that it was founded months earlier in late 2023 and never managed anywhere near the grant’s dollar figure—it reported just $100 in total revenue during its first three months in operation, according to its latest tax filings.
Power Forward Communities’ grant was one of just eight Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund grants that the EPA doled out in April 2024 and that, altogether, totaled $20 billion. EPA administrator Lee Zeldin announced on Feb. 13 that his staff and Department of Government Efficiency officials discovered that the Biden administration parked that same $20 billion at an outside financial institution before leaving office, limiting the federal government’s oversight of the program.
Without warning? To anyone with eyes to see, this outcome was obvious on Nov. 6. Organizations that did not immediately start planning for the consequences should have their senior management teams fired.
that is why biden released $$$20 billion into NGOs.
Yes I do, TDS is real even for the most “unbiased” reporters, but I’ve learned to factor that in!
It comes off like a press release from Huffman’s office. There’s a YouTube video of his video meeting w everybody freaking out over possible maybes. The best part is the Humboldt County Superintendent of Schools smiling and yet despairing over the maybes that might happen to poverty-stricken children….Dude has a fancy hairdo and makes over $200,000 a year and he’s concerned about poverty-stricken children?! Not really. How’s about reduce his salary? The Assistant Superintendent makes over $160,000. Our supervisors who make over $100,000/year are throwing this money around like crazy! We need a local DOGE to clean up this local shitshow…And don’t even start w the Cal Poly administrator’s salaries!!System is out of whack…
So you acknowledge that community leaders at the meeting were overwhelmingly upset about the funding freeze—because that’s exactly what was reported. If a single person in attendance had expressed support for the cuts, they would have been quoted.
As for balance, I’ve actively looked for North Coast leaders who support the freeze. So far, I haven’t found any. Local Republicans in leadership—like many across the country—have largely remained silent on the issue. We cannot report what they do not say.
What we can report is that leaders, even in predominantly red counties like Trinity and Del Norte, are deeply concerned about the freeze’s impact on schools, roads, and essential services. Nationally, support for the freeze has come from figures like Speaker Mike Johnson and Senator Kevin Cramer, and their reasoning—concerns about government spending—was mentioned in the piece. But this article is about the direct impacts on local communities, which is why the voices of those affected are front and center.
A good balanced would be to acknowledge the alternative, that Democrats implemented school closures for over a year, forced remote learning, business shutdowns, and contributed to the highest inflation in 50 years.
And now they’re screaming bloody murder about fixing wasteful spending.
Which of these scenarios will have a more significant impact on schools long term?
Im sick of the left freaking out about hypotheticals while completly ignoring just how bad they’ve already hurt these schools
The impacts of the COVID shutdown is important, but it’s its own issue and isn’t a counter to the funding freeze. The impacts of those shutdowns have been reported on, but they don’t justify or explain what might happen if we freeze funding now.
A counterargument on this topic would focus on why the current administration and local leaders believe the freeze is necessary—maybe to cut costs, prioritize other areas, or balance budgets. However, while we included a national perspective, no local leaders have come forward in support of the funding freeze, nor did anyone at the meeting share a viewpoint that was in favor of the funding freeze.
Funding freeze is like having to reboot your computer. Stay calm.
Folks (like the media) are getting all up in arms and equating the funding freeze to actual or eventual cuts. That is simply not the case and it is alarmist and scarcity thinking. I think the hyperbolic reporting over possible maybes is what generates the criticism. The Trump administration already said they aren’t cutting services to children or social security but the narrative from the left seems to be an echo chamber of paranoia and victimhood.
California should be much more worried about the death grip we seem to have on maintaining our sanctuary status, that choice is probably what’s putting us most at risk long-term of falling into a deficit. The feds are not fucking around.
There’s a big wake-up call coming if California doesn’t back down on harboring and bankrolling the education, housing, and healthcare of the endless supply of illegal immigrants that have found a cozy landing spot here. That behavior may prove to be a much bigger problem than any imagined future shortfalls from this federal freeze and audit.
It might be time for California leadership to consider interrupting the flood of $$$ going to the citizens of other countries. Freeze that. Then look at the bottom line.
A funding freeze isn’t just a simple reboot—it has real implications. Staying calm doesn’t mean ignoring potential consequences. Freezing funds can lead to delays, disruptions, and, in many cases, eventual cuts. That’s why people, including the media, are paying attention. Reporting on possible outcomes isn’t alarmist; it’s informing the public so they can engage with the decisions that affect them.
You reference Trump’s statements as reassurance, yet dismiss reporting on what other leaders are saying as fear-mongering. If words from leaders matter, they matter across the board.
It actually is. “The grant pause is perhaps most similar to a federal government shutdown, when a congressional impasse on spending legislation delays federal payments for some state and local services. In most of those circumstances, a couple weeks delay “isn’t hugely disruptive,” https://apnews.com/article/trump-federal-grants-pause-freeze-e5f512ae6f1212f621d5fa9bbec95e08
Since it’s Trump’s Executive Directive, yes I’m going to defer to his remarks over shrill hysterics and a catastrophic narrative. Where are the fact checkers fact-checking these other “leaders” bizarre “newsworthy” assertions? What programs aren’t affected by the funding freeze? The memo, from the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB), indicated that Social Security and Medicare programs would be exempt from the suspension in federal funding. Additional guidance released Tuesday further specified that “any program that provides direct benefits to Americans is explicitly excluded from the pause.”In addition to Social Security and Medicare, already explicitly excluded in the guidance, mandatory programs like Medicaid and SNAP will continue without pause,” the updated guidance said.
The memo adds that funds for small businesses, farmers, Pell grants, Head Start, rental assistance and other similar programs are also exempt.
More pressing for the solvency of California and it’s residents, we need to ask ourselves if we think that supporting, housing and educating citizens of other countries is an important enough priority to risk losing state Federal funding and grants. And that’s the important and pressing question that leaders like Huffman and journalists alike should be asking.
Yes you reported accurately. But I think you reported it as Huffman described it. Unfortunately fear and panic is what he is sowing. He did it from Day One because his narrative is Orange Man Evil. Huff and Pelosi can’t stop the distorted panic raging and I think that’s why the DEMs lost. I also think Trump has an evil streak but some cuts are a reasonable action. Huffman cannot be reasonable yet he mixes in those images ” skateboarding to the next agency” to ridicule and LOL. If it’s so serious then why is he joking?. I don’t trust Huffman at all- he is a force of polarization and fear of the worst possible things happening. Not helpful. I’m glad this is such an open comment section where we can step back from the panic and reason together. I don’t think everything will be cut. That would be very stupid. And Trump is not stupid. Lots of things but not that. Time for stepping up and paying attention for sure. Time to organize resistance if you like. But NOT time to freak out… well, not yet. LOL
But what you’re talking about is opinion. You think those things won’t be cut. I reported that local leaders are saying if the freeze is not lifted, there will be impacts to their programs. That isn’t an opinion about what they said, it is what they said. Just like I could report that Farce said, “I don’t think everything will be cut.” and that would be a true report of what was said. The difference is, not many people care about what an anonymous person on the internet says (sorry). But they do want to know what their leaders are saying if for no other reason than to have the information. The same way that what Trump says is news even if it’s not a true prediction or statement of fact.
This wasn’t just Huffman sitting around saying this. This was leaders discussing potential impacts from the funding freeze. The absence of other community leaders saying that the freeze is a good thing doesn’t make this a Huffman pr piece but a reflection on either the lack of support for it, or their lack of willingness to state that.
All of that is information that you get to choose what to do with.
Yeah this is nothing but ultra leftist communist propaganda

“Everything that I disagree with is nazi propaganda”
Cut some dumb Mars spending. Elon Musk pulls in over 8 million a day. Don’t tell me we can’t spend 6 mil over a few years in the ‘Cove.

This is not an article. It is a P/R Release.
—
Kids in classroom, a pregnant black mother (+2 Newsom points), and a firefighting photo.
All were picked by the P/R committee.
—
Missing word resilient though (-1 Newsom point).
—
Kym had an article on choosing news ‘items’ the other day.
—
Go figure.
Hit the Nail on the head my guy ?
Bozo, what photos would you like to be shared when talking about firefighting, pregnancy care, and education?
As for PR committee, I’ll be sure to check my mailbox for that check I will surely be receiving. :/
FYI- I report the news even when I disagree with it. And while I agree with Huffman on some things, many things I don’t. You’d also be surprised to know that I’m not very big on Newsom. And frankly, grant funding is a bit strange to me and feels a little like PG&E charging us high rates and then wanting a pat on the back for the once a year “discount” they give us.
But I also want our tax dollars to go to things that help US citizens and not spent on endless wars, sent to the Pentagon to simply disappear in their apparent inability to account for their funding, or given to countries that have better quality of life for their citizens than we do our own. I think our schools should be funded, and well. Our veterans should have the best care. Our infrastructure should be a priority. Among a host of other things.
But it doesn’t matter what I think. I get to express that in a voting booth or by writing a letter to the editor.
What I do here is publish news, attend community meetings, and report back to the community. That is what happened here. I have not received an invite to a roundtable discussing how local leadership is saying that the funding freeze is going to benefit their community. No republican groups in our region has sent us a press release praising the cuts. No pro-funding freeze letter to the editor has been denied. No pro-funding freeze/Musk/Trump rally has been held at the courthouse and we refused to go. (We did miss the Trump parade this year though as our reporter that covers those things was in the middle of a move and missed that the event was happening. Most event organizers reach out to us to let us know of events happening.)
The truth of the matter is that we live in a predominately blue area, within a blue state, with predominately blue representatives in state government. They put out press releases, we publish them. They hold an event, we report on it. And we do the same for any other representative/entity.
If you want more coverage of right leaning events, spearhead them, send us a press release, alert us to the event so we can cover it, call your local Republican representative and ask why they aren’t speaking out on the topics that matter to you, call your local Republican party chair and ask them to put out press releases. We’d be happy to provide that coverage, but we cannot make it up out of thin air.
I look forward to your contributions.
Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, an avid supporter of President Trump and fierce critic of Gov. Gavin Newsom, will run for governor in 2026.
Bianco, a law-and-order conservative, becomes the highest profile Republican to join a race already crowded with Democrats. All hope to succeed Newsom, who is serving his second term and is barred from running again.
https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-02-12/riverside-sheriff-chad-bianco-will-join-the-2026-governors-race
Republican will never win Governor in California, conservatives must through their votes behind the most viable alternative to Dem machine, vote Nicole Shanahan CA Governor ’26!
What is your point? Has the sheriff made public statements in support of the funding freeze? When he joins the race and submits press releases, we’ll publish them the same as we do for the other candidates.
you go, Lisa!
thanks for what you do
Most people do not want to “organize right wing events.” But that does not mean they want organized left wing events to control their lives either. It’s not one or the other. It’s neither. They don’t want anyone to organize their lives for them at all. They want to keep control of enough of their fruits of their own labor that they can afford some security, a modest house in relatively crime free town, and to feel that their efforts are treated with respect. That they are not viewed by anyone as the cash cow to support someone else’s agenda.
But in the battle between those that do want to organize everyone else, the left has a clear cut advantage. They have an endless list of wants- mostly they want someone else’s money and pretending their interest is for the “common good” doesn’t make it true. It’s is never for that. It is always for whatever slice of the demographic that can claim being victimized by those who really are the “common good.” The “right”, at least as so many people on the left define it, has trouble in that all they can sell is no agenda.
.
That might be the case here due to the political split, but it’s not the same everywhere. In many red states and counties, local news is filled with Republican leaders sharing their views, with limited liberal coverage—not because the media is slanted, but because the Democratic party in those areas isn’t as active or doesn’t hold power. Here, because we have predominantly Democratic leaders, their voices are the ones we hear most often.
Everyone has the right to choose whether or not to engage—whether it’s speaking to the press, organizing, or attending events. But that choice shouldn’t prevent others from participating in those same activities. When we report on these events, those who choose not to engage shouldn’t then claim they are being ignored or silenced, since that’s a role they’ve opted for themselves.
I’ve covered issues affecting people with all kinds of political views, including strong MAGA supporters, and I approach my work with the same level of dedication for every story. I don’t treat local leaders any differently because of their political beliefs. I speak regularly with my local supervisor, regardless of political differences, and make a point to provide coverage for the rural areas of southern Humboldt and southwestern Trinity counties, no matter their political leanings. My reporting is focused on content and sources, not on right or left.
This took awhile to digest but it makes it clear how this site gets its built in bias. A place that puts the burden on organizations to inform the reporter may be a lot of things. It can be a political propaganda arm. It could be selling advertising but not labeling it as such. It could be a community bulletin board. But what it is not is a news site. News reporting needs to turn over rocks to see what crawls out. Not request rock delivery. At best it leaves those not in an organization unable to get the information they- the general public- needs because all the available air is sucked up by those organizations who want to use it.
At worse a site where the owners makes themselves politically hostile then actually has the nerve to blame those to whom it is hostile for not feeding it is suffering some serious tunnel vision. Yes, anyone can, if this is insistence on access is accurate, participate but it would take quite a bit of nerve to stand individually and do it in the face of moderator and sychophant blowback. As is often said, people hide behind anonymity. Because, while complaining about neo nazi racism, it is the left that is full of bullying and personal attack here. Even worse, it facilitates the media bullying the public. The road to Trump was paved with this ideology.
It does explain the deep distortions of this site. A personally known progressive network has been formed in which some groups know they can get what they want in the public view. But to make it a safe space for congenial activists then declare ” Here, because we have predominantly Democratic leaders, their voices are the ones we hear most often.” is to make reporting a farce. It doesn’t even know what is outside of its acquaintance.
Here we go again—another round of assumptions based on a snippet of information. We’ve addressed these claims repeatedly, yet each time you’re proven wrong, you take a pause and then return with a new accusation. It’s ironic how often you engage with this site while holding such disdain for those who run it.
To be clear, we don’t just sit back and wait for news to come to us—we actively pursue stories, follow up on leads, and provide coverage where it’s needed. Yes, we publish press releases and letters to the editor because community voices matter. And yes, we reach out to political candidates, even when they don’t send us anything. I personally contacted the two Republican candidates in Trinity County to ensure they got coverage—because that community deserves it.
The idea that conservatives are too afraid to speak to us just doesn’t hold up. Many of my sources, and people I’ve known my whole life, are Republicans who trust me to tell their stories. Political leanings don’t dictate our coverage—facts and relevance do.
At the end of the day, everyone has an opinion on how this site should be run. The constant criticism, baseless assumptions, and endless back-and-forths in the comment section make this work exhausting. But then I remember that this space represents less than 1% of our readers.
So, believe what you want. We’ll keep doing the work.
Lisa , i see and understand your point . It might seem strange to people but many people with consrervitive views are not the group or org type of people . They see government as something that should be small as possible and a large portion of those see governmental controls as intrusions upon their freedoms. They believe that they should be able to start and run a company without all the red tape or at least far less red tape than they currently have to deal with . They see these departments within the government as governmental over reach . How is someone supposed to be able to be able to compete with established companies when the requirements to start one today are 1000 percent more costly and time consuming then it was 20 or 50 years ago ? And really when looking at say contracting is it required to have working experience prior to being able to take a test to prove you understand not only what it is you are doing but how to do it . The government already requires contractors to be bonded carry insurance as well as purchase local licenses on top of state contracting licenses and each city county have their own requirements on top of it all. Then there is the state and local planning and permitting process and state and local inspections . And all these groups if people that want to have a say in how something is done or where and how it is done all have a say in what those requirements are . At what point is it to much ? Our grandparents some say were the greatest generation because of what they were able to get built . I do not think that even one of the great projects could be completed with the governmental control and over reach micro managing that exists today . And look at how much extra that is costing any project ? The fact of the matter is that many of these groups that send press releases and invite reporters to their gatherings simply do not exist on the other side of the isle , because the other side of the isle is not attempting to control who does what or how they do it , they simply do not want to have to deal with all the over regulations and groups that feel entitled to not only control who what when and where and they are pissed as hell that they have to pay for them through their taxes because they simply make life harder for those whom are attempting to do , yet some how manage to always pass the buck when someone needs to be responsible for something . Like ms bass in LA claiming she wasnt even in the country because someone failed to tell her to be here ? Really ? A contractor can build a road a house a whatever summit plans have them approved pass all the inspections after jumping through all the hoops and is still responsible should it fail . If we have all this governmental control should not the governmental agencies that approved the plans and inspected the work be responsible for failures ? And if not then what is the purpose of having them in the first place ?
By design.
Folks are still living in tents and freezing to death in North Carolina. Maybe there should be a discussion of why that’s happening.
Yeah. What is Trump doing about that? He sure as hell brought up how FEMA was neglecting them and now he is in charge or was that just a political stunt?
he’s dismantling FEMA, too
haven’t you heard?
pesky socialism and all
Trump is and has been taking care of the North Carolina storm victims. He jumped into action on day one.
FEMA has orders to stay out of Red areas. TRUMP country.
So…Trump has no control of the federal government right now, according to you.
Do you ever get tired of spouting utter bullshit?
Everything is going to be fine people. Learn how to budget. People and agencies etc have been handed money for years essentially being fed and not having to find the food themselves. The free handouts have gone on for far too long contributing to the massive debt and hidden fraud blanket behind it all.
how many reading this know someone or many who abuse the system for free handouts? I think we all do… well it’s coming to an end. Time to buckle up folks. It’s all gonna be ok.
Education will be better, healthcare will be better, our forest management will be better, etc, but first cuts have to be made then the funding can be reallocated appropriately.
you need to look at the BILLIONAIRES HOARDING WEALTH
and quit kicking DOWN on your neighbors
For all the chanting of “tax the rich”, the people the left wants to push around and be obedient are the people who can be bullied the easiest. And that is not the rich. It is the working tax payer who does not have the ear of the press, nor the ear of the left at all. Who is vulnerable to government but not respected by it. The parent who wants schools cast them in the role of “the problem with society.” The ordinary employee who worries not at all that the lack of border control impaired the value of those ordinary workers trying to follow the endless streams of regulation only to see people who don’t taking presidence. The endless shaming and blaming.

and now homelessness is a crime
gee, wonder what is going to happen?
Our ancestors survived, it might be good to look at the ties that bind, and those that unravel a knot thats no longer useful.
just because a group of people get together and agree on something you don’t like, trust me when I tell you, the through line, and considerable effort is to shorter your life span, and for the bitter clingers, you’ll spend a lifetime of savings to stay alive.
it makes sense as a criminal investigator would look at the Cui Bono aspect.

so now the latest plan from our lords in the doge; offer everybody $5 grand from all the ‘savings’ (never ever look at the PEntagon budget for any WASTE or anything, only programs for the people) and then CUT SOCIAL SECURITY claiming FRAUD and WASTE
god I’m so glad this BILLIONAIRE (gets LOTSA SUBSIDIES THIS GUY) has us ALL COVERED
keep cheering MAGA–this will bite you on the ass too
Not everybody $5000, just tax-paying households.
As it should be.
They are going into the pentagon too. Get informed.

About time!!!!
thanks president trump
Don’t worry, I’m sure Firemarshall Gavin will come swooping into bail out the poor and needy with that $60 billion surplus from the world’s 5th largest econo….oh wait, I forgot, that’s gone. Whatever happened to our money?
He spent it all. And then some. Old Gov. Moonbeam Brown was even telling him to NOT do that. But he did. All of it. And people still praise him. It’s weird. People are so…in a daze( cognitive dissonance)…and in regards to both parties…
Newsome spending $9B/yr on criminal alien medical according to recent reports, end that and reprogram those funds to these programs if anyone believes they’re essential
Good thing we passed Measure O! Roads be damned we gotta pay all our paper pushers!!( Exaggeration yes some- not all-actually do work for their money)
it’s good for sure but if these programs all get cut there will definitely be less money going around the community, less people buying and paying sales taxes- we will for sure get less measure O money than anticipated.
there will be massive homelessness and suicides
of elders and the disabled
the lowest on the totem pole
Yep because that sales tax money is going to sac on every on line sale.
Already happening. I go to Oregon this weekend to buy building materials, appliances, gas($3.50/gal) and etc to fill my trailer. Everything is 10% less right off the bat!
And Oregonian come here to buy booze and avoid religious based consumption taxes.
Good news. About time everyone stops feeding from the public teat. Fortunately none of the impacted services are necessary or even desirable.
do you know where I can score some morphine?
NOT JOKING
That 18 year old Tesla employee, who has the Roblox user name Big Balls, has no authority to fire anyone.
and yet…
Well maybe if you guys weren’t promoting degeneracy and the destruction of the Western world through your schooling, maybe The government wouldn’t have frozen your funding.
Maybe if the schools were teaching kids arithmetic and spelling and banking as well as agricultural and industrial work than maybe our country wouldn’t be falling apart.
Maybe if we focused on teaching our children about building our country as a society instead of focusing on how we utilize our genitalia, our society wouldn’t be collapsing right now.
Duties and Obligations
vs
Rights and Priveleges.
Maybe stopping federal funding will make the Liberals and Democrats think about where the missing 163 billion went for the light rail system that never happened and the money vanished. California has tons of money but it is all being pocketed by our worthless, corrupt politicians. We need Doge to investigate California and arrest our politicians for being the slimmy criminals that they are.
Yup.
—
The project’s original budget was $33 billion, but the estimated cost has ballooned to $128 billion.
—
The project is decades behind schedule and there is no expected completion date. A New York Times investigation in 2022 found that the project was burning through $1.8 million every single day.
—
No high speed track has ever been laid… after 3 decades. Two central valley towns Merced and Bakersfield may be connected… that is… if the ‘1st stage’ is ever completed ($35 billion).
—
Go figure. Photo is of Newsom in January celebrating completion of an over-crossing.
Well…his hair looks good
Ya know, the other day out of curiosity I traced the entire footprint of that sordid rail line on the most current satellite imagery I could find, the most recent being from November. NOT ONE bit of rail has been laid down on the whole line just south of Fresno where it crosses highway 99 (the most developed portion) and ends out in farmland that connects to absolutely nothing further south, north of Shafter
For the most part it’s not much more than scraped land that starts, ends, and hopscotches over farmland, with a brand new bridge here and there that connect to dirt farm roads.
But no rail. I think I located a total of 10-15km that are in any stage close to having actual metal laid on the elevated areas. The rest is just dirt being pushed around. Just take photos of the built spots and sell that to the public, slap it on your web pages and call it progress. Lots of equipment laying around for what’s been not built so far.
Your tax dollars at work.
it’s good for sure but if these programs all get cut there will definitely be less money going around the community, less people buying and paying sales taxes- we will for sure get less measure O money than anticipated.
Hard to visualize things getting worse than our “normal”, but here it is.
The rich get richer while we pull the rug out from under the poor. The Emerald Triangle is a disadvantaged community. The average income is below the poverty level at 77% of the US average income.
I read all these comments about how “those” people are just going to have to get a job. People who benefit from most social programs, have underpaying jobs. So many comments here are angry folks who are being groomed to look down on the poor and not up at the real problem.
The tax breaks for the rich make them richer. This country has been on a downward path since Reagan.
Over the past 16 years, Musk’s business deals with the government total nearly $20 billion, according to federal contracting data. Conflict of interest much??? Musk paid no federal income taxes in 2023. The world’s richest man is asking you to hurt. If he paid his fair share there would likely be no problem.
On their 2020 income tax returns, Trump and his wife Melania paid no federal income taxes and claimed a refund of $5.47 million, according to the report by the staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation.
How much of a percentage of your meager earnings did you pay in taxes?
So, my best advice to the down lookers is to look at the real problem. You are being misdirected by the over lords. Wean yourselves from Faux News, Breitbart and Newsmax for one month. Watch world news sources instead.
The beautiful USA is being handed over to the Russians. tRump is pushing the New World Order through Project 2025.

Most of the capital growth in the last 2 decades have come from bits not atoms. The idea that we can only grow by using finite resources is just false.
Pushing envey is not a long term tactic for success. The rich got richer whether they buy the left or the right government But the left specializes in public blaming of ordinary people- regulating where they can, nagging where they can’t regulate. And things kept getting harder for most. Hard times come no matter what but the left makes it so much more painful.
Hello! Government made the rules that made Musk so rich. The right and left right government. Both propaganda machines makes the same claim of that every one is being misled. So?
So Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous should be renamed into Hoarders. They are mentally deficient and they have no souls. They hoard away more wealth than they can ever spend in a hundred lifetimes. Yet still they want More More More. And they pretend the desperately poor workers somehow deserve the little they have. The mega-wealthy need to be hurt. And they need to be reviled and revoked. Even Warren Buffet admits they should be taxed much harder. But they have us all in a stranglehold. And yet some people still worship them? We need to tear down these mega-wealthy parasites to restore some sense of unity and shared goals…I don’t like lazy people either but that’s a different rant!

Thank you for sharing this. It’s important people know what’s happening because I feel like people sit and consume Fox News and eat up everything their orange overlord tells them and it must be fact! People are blind to what is happening and how it is hurting people in our community.
I also wanted to add that the ED of Changing Tides is Kerry* Venegas, not Carrie.
I don’t think any of my conservative friends watch Fox, Breitbart or any cable media for that matter. All of my democrat friends consume CNN NYT and parrot it like its the gospel of truth.
Both worldviews provided by Fox and NYT are wrong, conservatives seem to understand this better than democrats
Wait I thought California was the fifth largest economy in the world. Now you need the federal money?
Biden did promise Newsome the Feds would cover 100% of the LA fire recovery costs. Newsome did expedite clean up, but also passed an executive order that people in areas where CalFire operates has to maintain a 5′ fire buffer. Good luck enforcing that.
Of they take funding away this will be a way that will shorten my life since im a senior who needs help due to my illness. This is another way to get us out of the way. I also am sadden for our children who deserve to have a warm meal and I know of many that will go hungry. I could do my best regardless of how ill I am and try to tutor the children in need as long as I can breath.

Richard Wolff on the tax cut scam of wreaking havoc on public programs
Oh no! We can’t spend other peoples money! We are going to die!
Deal with it Humboldt. As a matter of fact this corrupt ass county needs a
full DOGE audit while we are at it. There is a lot to look at.
Missing people, dysfunctional healthcare, artificially high property values, corporate kickbacks, unregulated grant spending, welfare money scams, on and on. I am sure the Supervisors wouldn’t mind at all.
We need to fundamentally change the merit based system which demands payment for services up front.
Thing is this , most of the programs that are supported at a federal level never were supposed to be permanent. Our country can not afford to keep spending , people need to buckle down and tighten belts that suckle from federal government teets . Remember that federal income tax was brought about to repay overspending , it was never supposed to turn into this monster that it is today . Those that have become addicted to being supported by others have a tough time adapting to having to learn to support themselves or their ideals however government that allows debt at these levels is nothing more than tools of global banks that enslave entire nations . For America to truly be a country of freedom and free people we must break the chains of slavery and get our spending under control. That is not a easy task and it is not something that will not be a bit messy , however it is something that must be done . Not unlike the college kids that work 3 part time jobs to pay for school living on noodles , the sacrifice is worth the reward . Those whom live off of federal government funded programs need to wake up and realize that they must produce some value that others see and sell that value because the federal funding will be going away and if they want their projects to continue they will need to ensure it is packaged in a manor that enough people will be willing to buy it . Sadly many of the programs are bloated and over priced for the return the taxpayer gets . Throwing good money after bad never works however it does shut up those who have learned if they throw their fits loud enough money will get thrown to them , much like a spoiled child throwing a fit in a store . Politicians for too long have been worried about image to the point they are played by this and throw money verses attempting to correct the problem or truly care . It had never worked in child raising and neither has it worked in government and it never will . When someone suggests a tax for this or for that or requests taxpayers money think about the value the tax payers are getting for it , do not be fooled and allow emotional spending or the story of sadness to be the deciding factor . Shopping therapy only works if someone else is picking up the tab and even then that someone normally receives something special . While there is a huge amount of spending cuts and some worthwhile programs will get hurt it is far better for those few to suffer a bit than for everyone to suffer greatly . Life is never fair life is never just however it can and will get better . Through responsible spending at the federal level we can ensure that those of us whom work hard to earn our way in life will not be saddled with forever debt the boomers have attempted to saddle us with , to the point our backs are breaking i might add. The boomer generation is directly linked to what has happened , spending well beyond abilities to pay they as they aged demanding that their costs are covered by everyone . They were the ones whom decided to not pay into the system decided to not save up decided to start a family without having the means to support one or willing to change how they lived in order to do so and now when the piper must be paid are demanding that they are still supported
Here’s a thought. Get off your asses and work hard enough to earn billions. Then you can donate it to all these causes. Musk has all the freedoms you do. What is stopping you from making billions?
you poor propagandized fool
you will be the death of me and many like me
wait a minute. We need federal funding? I was told that California is the fifth largest economy in the world. They lied to me?
Tech sector giveth, CA wasteth away

I realize that the RHBB commenters are probably dumber than the average person, but holy crap, there’s been a whole lot of dumbass on this site lately.

You know them bootstraps your grandpappy and conservatives have been telling folks to pull up for decades? Too many folks been wearing Birkenstocks and can’t grasp the concept. The Gravy Train is going off the rails. Iffen you’re pushing out curtain climbers, you’d best be raising and feeding em yourself. The seniors, most of thems boomers these days and they heard grandpappys wisdom decades before we did. They shoulda listened.
More money needs to be spent on the 3 “R’s” than on 3 squares a day.
About damned time folks is wising up!
Isn’t cutting funding to transport kids to school and keep the roads working for schoolkids among others what Trinity was concerned about? “It will literally take the wheels off our busses in our district, because we lose $600,000 and have five to six layoffs that we’ll have to do in March. It’s 23% of our county road department budget, just Secure Rural Schools.”
How much you wanna bet that not one dime of the unfunded pensions that Trinity County is supporting will get cut while they snivel about having frittered taxes away for decades that should have been used to maintain them thar roads, Ms. Kemp?
Aren’t pensions contracts? So are you advocating that Trinity County tell people that signed a contract that they don’t get what they were promised in return for their work? I mean sure if you want Trinity County to renegotiate for future benefits but you can’t legally and morally say, “Hey, screw you, I decided I made a bad deal so I’m not going to pay you.”
Then why are those pensions not in the county’s line item budget yet still taken out of the general fund? Taxpayers didn’t sign the contract. The vermin in gubmint did. The taxpayers expected their elected leaders to be good stewards of their money and wisely dole out funds as needed for reasonable infrastructure needs and maintenance. The vermin in gubmint have failed in their responsibilities, wasted public funds, shirked their duties and more than likely enriched themselves.
What should a reasonable citizenry do to such lowlife scumbags who frittered their taxes away, Ms Kemp? Absent any oversight from law enforcement who are failing the citizenry and are part of the grift?
LL, like so many anti-govt commenters, only reveal how little they know about how govt works — Trinity County is part of PERS which means the Trinity BOS pays into the system but doesn’t manage it — and the pension benefits are a contractural obligation — I think govt should reform the current system (defined benefit v. 401k; “California Rule”) but it’s not something a Board of Supervisors can just up and do.
Show us what line item shows that payment to PERS.
You’re questioning if Trinity is part of PERS — Ha, ha! — Inform yourself then we can talk, ok?
Explain to me how government vermin steal taxes and services from citizens to fund their and their cronies retirement, government lover…
id rather hear from Mr. Cloney though.

There you go again!
I don’t love govt — I just understand how it works — you clearly don’t.
People do that all the time. Trump did it many times. It’s basically what declaring bankruptcy means…
Not sure what you’re trying to imply… What’s 3”R’s gotta do with transportation? Iffen them younguns wanna go to school, they’ll trudge 3 miles uphill both ways the same way the boomers grandpappy did…
After they got up and did their chores, that is…
Grandad beat grandma.
Grandpa was a drunk.
Grandpa said he walked to school, but actually…he just stunk.
Smelled of beer, cigarettes and piss, while preaching of his cleanliness.
Grandpa never learned to read or write so his schooling is highly doubted.
All the stories you say he was, is likely your imagination flouted.
Grandpa died super young, from all thos cigs he smoked.
Now I think what you say of grandpa …is nothing but a hope.
After all.
Good Grandpa’s taught their grandsons that fascism is no joke.
And he still did more in a year than you in a life time
I don’t consider abusing grandma and raising dumbfucks much of anything, but I understand it may mean a lot to you.
[edit]
Nothing like an overt argument for domestic violence. Wow
LL longs for the good old days when women knew their place and one good beating was enough to keep them in line.
Can you expand your definition of domestic violence?
cause I think you might be overlooking billions of dollars of domestic violence exported every year.
so yeah let’s just focus on the definition that is indefensible.
we getting played because we can’t agree to stop giving away our money to strangers who have zero liability for their actions.
Btw, grandma got trained up, and lived happily ever after.
You see, grandpa raised my dads half sister like she was his own.
No more half siblings after that!
Misogyny has entered the chat!
This comment encourages violence against women who are the largest segment of the population routinely beat, kidnapped, assaulted, raped and murdered.
And the greatest risk of murder to grandma? It is not from a random stranger, but at the hand of Grandpa who like too many men like LL who think they are f****** entitled to convey with violence to women “how things are going to be.” ?.
Settle down. Art and I clearly used past tense language and are two adults discussing history.
It’s a shitty thing to say.
Comments condoning beating women fits the RHBB comment section quite perfectly.
Kym , shouldnt it be the state and county funding local transportation to and from schools ? The fact that state and counties have failed to use local taxes for what they were collected for is not the responsibility of the federal government to cover , it is the local and state leadership that should be responsible and held accountable for this and other funding problems , california has some of the highest costs of living in the nation fuel taxes pge etc and what do we as tax payers get ? According politicians here locally they state the average driver in california spends 900 dollars a year more on car repairs because of the state of our roads , this was stated while they were attempting to raise still more money for the general fund yet claiming it would go to roads like so many other lies to pass taxes .
Some of y’all really need to read the book “Who moved my cheese”.
One works hard for 50-60 years, pays into SS and gets bupkis back. SNAP and Medicaid exist so we don’t starve or get sick and die in the streets in front of your house. My fervent hope is that all you who bash those who are in extremis financially and need help never have a debilitating accident or disease that takes you and your righteous indignation down to the level of need that millions of Americans now face. Thousands MORE now are losing jobs, will lose homes, cars and everything they worked SO hard for because of one demented old freak in the White House who understands nothing on his own and who parrots the last guy in his ear. Good luck ya’ll!
Clinton laid off 400,000 federal employees, how many are we at now?
I was laid off from a few jobs in my 20s. 1000’s of local workers have been laid off from cannabis distros in the past few years, why is this normal in the private sector but federal workers feel they’re entitled to immunity from lay offs?
There is plenty of of room to trim fat. There are too many federal employees that donlittle and plenty of unnecessary programs.
Here comes the left with more delusional scare tactics.
Divided and Conquered.
Please explain the multi multi millionaire status of government employees on 175k a year in a way that would not trigger more questions about abuse fraud and corruption.
please focus on the blatant ignorance needed to accept and even justify this.
my dear friends landlord made 200k a year working thru internews, lost her job, and has to sell her many properties.
the difference between who disperse money and those who receive it, might be a clue.
the level of crime we have allowed on both sides has created this crack head dependence on government kick backs ( aid)
We are living to witness the biggest grift exposed in our lifetime.
to many of us, why have we understood this aspect of white collar crime….(quasi legal), and yet somehow chastise our neighbors and community who have become willing participants in The Who can benefit more from wealth redistribution.
not everyone is 100% saint
nor are they 100% sinner.
just individuals trying to do better for their families at all costs
does anyone here actually recognize the truth behind flouridated water supplies?
the answer to this will help people understand the discernment level of the individual facing propaganda and judging one’s ability to tell fact from fiction
“ wisdom is not taught, it is learned “
Best news for the future is Trump will die eventually and even if he is replaced by another freak at least he will be pushing up daisies and won’t (himself) be able to enjoy the fruits of all his evil destruction. He will die and nothing in this world will be able to bring him back. No one leaves this place alive not even an orange freak of nature. He can cause all the destruction he wants but in the end he will still end up a stiff carcass
wtf kym u need to retire
I am constantly stunned by folks who don’t think I know who they are, who use my site to promote their point of view, post obituaries, and find out where the roads are closed who randomly post nasty shit pointed at me. My mama didn’t raise me that way.
What are you willing to do for senior citizens, less fortunate, children, and people who have had a disaster and lost everything? I am willing to help my community.
“The executive orders signed by President Trump aim to halt federal funding for programs involving diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as anything related to climate change or the “green new deal.” This has sent shockwaves through rural communities in Huffman’s district, which rely heavily on these federal dollars.”
Hmmmm… maybe one should consider ending DEI programs and stop pushing The Green New Deal nonsense… if they want to keep their federal funding.
Also, why the heck are $6.2 million in federal tax-dollars being used for “fuel reduction’ on people’s private homes in Shelter Cove? Ridiculous!
BUT BUT BUT only RED states are dependent on federal funding!!
Why can’t the world 5th largest economy just go without federal funding?
Oh right, because it’s all bullshit propaganda (just like this article) and what money they do have they are wasting on nonsense.
Oh yeah, infrastructure BIL money is being released, so this article is largely FAKE NEWS
It’s unreal how all these federal agencies have been wasting the taxpayers money in the billions and people are more freaked that DOGE is finding the waste .I hope DOGE goes through every gov agency and cuts the waste.
Elon Musk is a foreign agent who is dismantling the United States’s ability to fund, levy, and raise an armed force while sabotaging our foreign relations and crippling our geopolitical situation. He has a deal in place with the People’s Republic of China to do so, and in exchange, he gets special privileges for his entities within China.”
With a quotation on the end it reads like that’s not your opinion, but hard to tell.
We live in a State and County who has chosen to aid and abet illegal aliens with millions of dollars worth of resources. All the while money is expected from the federal government to balance our budgets. California has wasted over 75 million dollars to “Trump Proof” California. If you want help from the Federal Government, abide by the Federal Laws. The majority of Americans are in favor of this. I am disappointed that our County Board of Supervisors has taken the posture of illegal Sanctuary status. We should expect no funding from Federal Government as a result of this action. Think about it.
There is nothing “illegal” about the County’s sanctuary status – it was approved and passed as a voter referendum, to be clear. People may not like it, but it is legal, and it is in place here by the will of the voters.
Go DOGE!!!
Years of fraud and abuse coming to an end.
Localy speaking, it doesn’t bother me a bit, karma, you destroy our economy give our income to the highest bidder. I wish all these government workers would lose their job. I’m supposed to feel sorry for the gov employees that have ruined my income twice. Logging and weed. No sympathy here
And the fearmongering begins again. Pathetic.
