[Update: Major Injury] Truck Falls Off Cliff Near South Jetty With Two People Inside

A vehicle fell 100 feet down a cliff near Humboldt Bay’s South Jetty just before 8 a.m. today, according to scanner traffic.
There are reportedly two occupants in the vehicle, and one of the occupants is “partially responsive.” Firefighters arrived at the scene and had to “cut a path” to the vehicle.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the vehicle involved in the accident is a truck, but the make and model of the truck has not been made available. We will update this post when we hear more information.
Update 9:25 a.m.: According to CHP, the accident is now considered to be a major-injury accident. A patient was removed from the vehicle and placed in an ambulance. The patient is “breathing.”
Update 9:40 a.m.: According to scanner traffic, an injured woman did not appear to have been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, but they said it was unclear if the occupants had been driving at the time the vehicle fell down the cliff. She was “found in the back of the car, so it looks like she tumbled around a little bit.”
Update 9:45 a.m.: One of the patients was rescued and evacuated from the area by a helicopter.
Update 10 a.m.: According to CHP, the location is “South Jetty Rd / Table Bluff Rd.”
Update 12:50 p.m.: From the Ferndale Volunteer Fire Department:
A challenging rescue operation unfolded on the South Jetty in Loleta this morning requiring a coordinated effort from multiple agencies after a vehicle went over the cliff. The Loleta Fire Department, the primary agency responsible for the area, requested mutual aid, and Ferndale Fire Department responded, sending personnel and specialized equipment to the scene.
The incident involved a vehicle that had plummeted down a steep embankment. Two firefighters, trained in rope rescue techniques, played a crucial role in the operation. They rappelled down the treacherous bank to assist a team of medics already on scene, who were providing care to the two vehicle occupants. The challenging terrain and precarious position of the victims made the rescue complex and required careful coordination between all responding agencies.
The two firefighters worked alongside the medics, providing support and ensuring the safe extrication of the injured individuals. The rescue involved securing the victims and carefully hoisting them down the steep cliff to the awaiting ambulance.
The successful outcome of this difficult rescue showed how well the collaborative spirit and training of the various agencies worked in unison. Ferndale Fire Department would like to recognize the following organizations for their invaluable assistance:Loleta Volunteer Fire Dept, CAL FIRE, Rio Dell Volunteer Fire Department, City Ambulance of Eureka, California Highway Patrol, and the United States Coast Guard.
The teamwork and professionalism demonstrated by each agency were essential in ensuring the safety and well-being of the individuals involved. Incidents like this highlight the importance of mutual aid agreements and the dedication of first responders throughout the region.![]()

That is a very bad section of road. I pray that the occupants of the truck will make it to the hospital and have a full recovery.
Table Bluff..???
Must be, it is the only place near the S. Jetty to have a 100′ drop.
Looks that way. The picture on top, high above the ocean; seems like it has to be Table Bluff along with the estimated cliff height. The natural South Spit actually begins at the base of T. Bluff and extends north to the bay entrance where the artificial, actual jetty extends out into the ocean. Very tough work for the rescue team, thank you to all.
A little confused was it a car, “pickup truck” or was the truck first mentioned a Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner?? Not well coverd.
Mostly because it was a verbatim off a different scanner reports.
What kind of truck? My daughter drives a maroon Tahoe! Would be nice to know this information!!
A Tahoe in not a truck
You called it! Is that your final answer? No more calls, we have a winner!
Call her. Not someone else’s job to babysit your kid
It would be helpful if a distinction could be made behind types of trucks with pickup trucks distinguished from commercial trucks such as Kenworth, Peterbilt, Mack, etc. and smaller delivery trucks.
Most likely this involves a pickup truck which many people use as a personal vehicle. A distinction would help us greatly understand better what is being reported.
FYI those involved in trucking NEVER call a pickup a truck. Its called a pickup and the Kenworth is called a truck
The term pickup truck has been used for as long as I can remember. Trucks like the Kenworth and generally call them big rigs.
“big rig” is a term for children
I am entirely sick of people that don’t like what I have to say. I have been driving a “BIG RIG” longer than you have. The children I know also call my truck a “BIG RIG.”
Saying that an 18 wheeler is not a truck is only “semi-true”…?
Good one!
Hope you feel better soon…
I feel just fine there Sky Pilot? What kind of smoke have you been breathing?
Good for you. “Big Rig” is a descriptive term of endearment which recognizes that somebody is working hard piloting a very large and potentially dangerous machine down the road every damn work day freighting food, materials and garden supplies for a sorta, maybe, kinda OK, great nation we still have hope for. Yet. Today anyway. Please.
Sick of pedantic, picayune authoritarian elitists disparaging hard-working truckers means of employment.
I agree, pickup trucks are smaller trucks, called ‘trucks” but I looked up “Tahoe” and it is an SUV!! Not a “pickup”!! It’s a TKO in favor of JANA!! You win, Baby!
I did not mention a Tahoe in my comment. Now it my turn for a TKO! Want to go to round two?
We are repeating what is told to the dispatcher by a caller (often deeply upset at the situation) and by emergency personnel speaking over the scanner. We don’t actually see the accidents. We have to report from the information that is available online.
Technically, a Kenworth, Peterbuilt, Mac etc is a tractor not a truck. That’s why when they are towing, they are referred to as a tractor/trailer..just sayin….
‘Truck’ brand names aren’t descriptive of their usage. They can be road tractors pulling semi or full trailers or trucks which carry freight on their frames and can also pull trailers. There are many combinations. If we could be more precise we could avoid confusion.
Metal box on wheels
ten wheel tractor or a 18 wheeler when trailering maybe ?
I have always love being parked at the top , just watching the waves . Too many times I’ve seen wheel tracks right up to the edge. How frightening this must have been.
Lots of hand gliders or whatever you call them now, also pull up close to the edge. I have always wondered what would happen if the weight of their vehicles caused the bluff to crumble. They seem to be a fearless group!
“They seem to be a fearless group!”
You’re generous.
“foolish”, “ignorant”, and/or “arrogant” was more what I had in mind.
They are a fearless group, but I have no reason to run them down with nasty words.
Hang gliders, not hand gliders. That’s not being pedantic, it’s why they’re called that; you hang underneath the wing. The cars they drive up in don’t park on the edge, because that’s where they take off and land. I know. I pulled up once to take some photos and got yelled at by apparently God one day, only to look up at a paraglider screaming at me to move my car as he was trying to land. They take advantage of the strong updrafts coming up the bluff to take flight and also land, but they need the whole parking area to do that.
Sorry, I am not into that sport, so I failed on using the correct term. Thanks for correcting my mistake.
Not trying to be nitpicky, but they sure will if you mispronounce their sport. Like futbol and football. But boy howdy will they let you know if you’re in the landing zone. thankfully there’s enough space there to just not park RIGHT THERE and watch waves.
Looks like the BLM might/should put a low concrete (18″ high) fence around that edge.
Leave a couple spots for the Hang-gliders and Para-gliders to take off.

But… I can’t really remember anybody driving off that cliff before.
Still a vague memory… maybe sometime in the past.
I can remember four, maybe five over the years. Everybody that made the trip and lived said it was pretty weird.
Nah. That bluff has been slowly peeling and sliding away since it came up out of the ocean. Think of the bluff and the disappearing lot at Fleener Creek trailhead by Centerville. Any fencing or rails don’t last long. If you need to get close for a photo op, better to park sideways or just not park on the lip to begin with and get out and walk to the edge.
It’s been quite some time since someone went over the edge, rather that one hairpin turn going down. I remember some old timers talking about when it was just a dirt one lane road and people going to fast and going off the side.
Dunno… that bluff has been er… relatively stable for a long time, unlike the area just south of Centerville Beach, that the ocean is re-claiming. But I sure wouldn’t want to build a house there !

>”If you need to get close for a photo op, better to park sideways or just not park on the lip to begin with and get out and walk to the edge.”
You are assuming that humans behave rationally ?

Could always re-locate the road through the ‘SECRET LILY RESERVE‘.
Oh god… now I’ve blown that secret !!!
—
At first thought I had was that somebody had gone off the 1 lane road down below.
It ain’t that secret. I think there’s a pretty beat trail right to it. Bigger travesty is what happened to the old lighthouse. That would have been a nice historical thing to visit but…..
There was serious ice this morning. Happy to hear they’re breathing.
Freak cold predicted tonight, the coast is thought to be 15-20 degrees!
Yikes!
Not quite that cold. Interiors like Hayfork and Weaverville will be in the teens but that isn’t “feak cold” for them. 0 would be freak cold. We’ll be 25-34 along the coast, a little cooler the more uphill you go. Definitely will make for some late-thawing areas on the roads.
Actually, that iIS the forecast….
15°-20° with the wind chill factor…
From 2:00 AM until 9:00 AM…
The NWS Eureka CA issued an updated extreme cold warning at 4:04 p.m. on Sunday valid for Monday between 2 a.m. and 9 a.m. for Northern Humboldt Coast and Southwestern Humboldt. The NWS adds, “Dangerously cold wind chills from 15 to 20 degrees expected.”

Wind chill is not real. It’s an estimate to tell you how cold you might “feel”. The temperature on the coast will not be close to 15-20 degrees
Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures,” describes the NWS. “Dress in layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves if you must go outside. To prevent water pipes from freezing; wrap or drain or allow them to drip slowly. Keep pets indoors as much as possible. Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills inside. Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates.”

Extreme cold warning: Take Action! An extreme cold warning is issued when dangerously cold air temperatures or wind chill values are expected or occurring. If you are in an area with an extreme cold warning, avoid going outside. If you have to go outside, dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and make sure at least one other person knows your whereabouts. Update them when you arrive safely at your destination.

Whatever you want to call it, it is cold this Monday morning.
Try going outside without a jacket or wet skin. Come back and tell us the difference. You’ll be amazed. That wind will zap your own heat faster than still air.
Guess what? It never got that cold last night, as was predicted by the very weather office down at the marina.
H-O-W-E-V-E-R, you didn’t mention wind chill in your original post, so you lose points on that. The difference between 18 and 34 or just 30 and 34 makes a mountain of difference.
You should check again…
You may have confused me with Dan…
My original post did mention wind chill…

God Bless all First Responders, Across USA, Today and everyday. Thier Bravery, Dedication and Heart is nothing shy of Miraculous. Love them all and thier Families.
So much gratitude for the emergency personnel, true heroes!
They are all a wonderful group of people that want to help someone in need no matter what they may be needed for. The person(s) in trouble always comes first. You are right, they are our true hero’s.
Lucky the first responders were close to the incident. There are many places on the north coast where you might not even find the vehicle and victims to save them.
Actually sounds like they found her in the back of a car, like the update said.
There is a obvious need for a retainer of some sort, even a big log would work. There is nothing to stop a car from rolling right off. Some big boulders close together something.
Oh shit!! I live on Cannibal Island Rd… I heard the emergency sirens going off, but just now heard about this .. awful!!
