[Update] Medical Rescue Underway for Two Trapped in Sand Avalanche at the Samoa Dunes

Medical RescueEmergency personnel are being dispatched to a medical rescue call near New Navy Base Road and Samoa this afternoon around 1:49 p.m. A 911 caller told emergency dispatch that a woman was in need of medical assistance after a sand avalanche had “swallowed” her husband and trapped the woman. The 911 caller hung up as they attempted to assist the woman.

Emergency personnel from the surrounding area are en route to provide aid.

According to scanner traffic, there is concern that the situation may have resulted in a fatality.

Resources from Samoa, Arcata, and Cal Fire have been dispatched to the scene, along with deputies from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. Specialized equipment like a side-by-side UTV has been requested to access the couple.

Scanner traffic indicates there is one unknown age patient trapped under a sand avalanche “down at the dunes”. Subsequent traffic indicated the location to be at the “Samoa Power Pole beach”.

Please remember that this story is unfolding. Information is being reported as we gather it. However, some of the information coming from witnesses and initial official reports could be wrong. We will do our best to get the facts but, in the case that something is inaccurate, we will update with correct information as soon as we can.

Update 2:20 p.m.: The Coast Guard helicopter is en route to a nearby hospital with one patient; CPR is in progress.

Update 2:25 p.m.: A second patient was being evaluated by first responders at the scene.

Is this avalanche from a hole they dug and got into?

Yeah I’ve spent a lot of time on local beaches never seen or heard of a sand avalanche

I have. I’ve seen people digging someone out, but more of the deep hole in the sand where the sides cave in and the person is stuck up to their neck. The wet sand in the holes dries out, loses it’s adhesion to itself and gravity takes over.

so they dig a hole, crawl in it caves in and they call it an avalanche?

Not a cave in, but the digging could have triggered the avalanche

It could have been a dune sliding and causing an avalanche, like at a ski slope. It could have nothing to do with anyone digging…

The dunes got really steep this year. Doesn’t surprise me.

If you want to see a bunch of sand avalanches head to Guthrie Creek south of Centerville beach, especially in the rainy season. It’s one of the most actively eroding coastal bluffs I’ve ever witnessed.

Yes- that is a scary landscape! I have walked as far away from those collapsing cliffs as possible yet still felt….surreally borderline fatal

Google knows everything so I looked it up. Sand avalanches occur on steeply sloped dunes when gravity overcomes friction and a slab gives way. If it’s snow it’s an avalanche. On Humboldt road it’s the same thing – a slip out or a slide depending on where it happens relative to the road. What triggered it is another question

I can’t imagine being trapped in sand and can’t move or even breathe good. I wonder if a wave hit a sand bank and washed it over them. I hope with all my heart that the patient being flown to the hospital by the Coast Guard with CPR in progress will be fine. Many times, people trapped in the sand end up deceased.

He is not fine, I’m his brother. He is in the ICU, on life support. He likely won’t make it.

Sand caves have taken many lives over the years in California. It’s sad that it usually happens to young people playing in the sand at the beach. Really hope for a positive outcome. Luckily first responders were close by. Thankyou for your efforts!

One cubic yard of sand weight is about 2600 lbs.
.People don’t realis the danger digging holes near the shore with the water table so near the surface the sand can solidify. A young man from Fortuna sadly died at centerville beach a few years ago digging in the sand.So sad, just having fun with friends

Oh no! I hope they’re both okay.

All I can think of is a tall, steep dune collapsing as they climbed it or walked under it.

Some years back, some kids down the street were doing what kids do,
tunneling into the side of the dune.
The dune collapsed.
The children were found due to their little legs still protruding from the dune.

Please teach your children not to burrow the dunes.

When a person digs a hole, crawls in and the sand falls on top of that, to me that isn’t an avalanche, that is digging a hole and burying yourself…..not exactly an accident…..I have seen people doing this and my thoughts were that is not safe. Why don’t people see this?

Not one part of this article, does it say they did just that. Only in the comments section do people mention anything about digging anything.. making assumptions as per usual… come on…. Read the article before saying anything… Just a suggestion ?

Victim blaming much? You are all assuming they caused the sand collapse themselves. We don’t know the whole story. Have some compassion for the poor couple.

The creepy biblical shit at the top of every comment sucks.

I like the sentiment and I posted it as a reminder to try and stop being shitheads to each other in the comment section. And when I remembered it came from the Bible, I credited it rather than plagiarize. I’m rather fascinated at how many people have mentioned this small sentence to me and yet how few seem to realize that there is a link to the comment rules not far above it. Maybe some folks will actually take it to heart.

What is the Bible, if not just a big old comments page?

It’s best to think of the Bible as a library of books, a bibliotheca. Ecclesiastes is wildly different from Proverbs, for example.

Any more news? Did they dig a hole or was it actually an avalanche? I can’t picture any dunes out there being high or steep enough to bury an adult.
