Heat Wave Could Make Humboldt (and Beyond) a Hotbed for Fireworks and Fires

Hot letters with sunPrepare to sizzle because today marks the beginning of a sweltering heat wave set to last through the 4th of July weekend. The National Weather Service in Eureka warns of “a long lived and dangerous heat wave,” with peak temperatures expected to soar above 110°F in interior valleys and even coastal areas seeing highs around 80°F. NOAA forecasts for the Southern Humboldt Interior are as follows:

  • Today: Sunny with highs between 83°F and 98°F.
  • Tonight: Mostly clear with lows from 53°F to 63°F.
  • Wednesday: Sunny, reaching a blistering 91°F to 106°F.
  • Wednesday Night: Clear skies and lows from 60°F to 70°F.
  • Independence Day: Sunny with temperatures between 90°F and 105°F.
  • Thursday Night: Mostly clear with lows from 61°F to 71°F.
  • Friday: Sunny and sizzling with highs from 93°F to 108°F.
  • Friday Night through Saturday Night: Mostly clear with lows from 59°F to 69°F and highs between 94°F and 109°F.
  • Sunday through Monday: Mostly clear with highs from 88°F to 103°F and lows from 56°F to 66°F.

The Weather Service also notes, “extremely dry conditions combined with gusty northeast wind early this week will create critical fire weather conditions, especially around the rim of the Sacramento Valley in Lake County.”

With fireworks season upon us, it’s crucial to be mindful of fire hazards. “Take extra care to help prevent wildfire!” the service urges. While using safe and legal fireworks, make sure to have a container of water available to douse the fireworks in after use. f

For those heading to ocean waters, the NWS says to expect gale-force winds and hazardous steep seas through tomorrow evening, with sustained winds up to 35 knots and significant sea heights of 16 feet in the outer waters.

As the temperature rises, so do the risks. The National Weather Service reminds us that “heat is one of the leading weather-related killers in the United States, resulting in over one thousand fatalities each year… .” Hydration, limited strenuous outdoor activities, breaks in the shade, and frequent check-ups on those without air conditioning are essential. And remember, “NEVER leave kids or pets unattended in vehicles.”

As you prepare to celebrate the Independence Day holiday, remember to keep cool and stay safe. The heat is on, Humboldt,—let’s make sure we’re ready for it.

Thank you to every one of my neighbors for not subjecting me and everyone else who lives near you to unnecessary increased fire risk. My dog would like to thank everyone who doesn’t subject him to unnecessary explosive noises that he finds terrifying.

Tradition from the East Coast, where it’s usually pretty juicy this time of year.

They are illegal in Mendo. Why not in Humboldt, too? They also pollute the air, especially the professional ones.

Fireworks stands in Eureka are mostly empty. I think most people are spending money on groceries and gasoline. So far, I have only heard a few illegal ‘mortars’ or skyrockets going off in Eureka.

Used to be a continual night-time annoyance from July 1 on…
(and a few days after the 4th). See what happens this year.

Wow its hot outside and raining in the winter too much! I thought all these hippies were crazy talking about chem trails and cloud seeding. Now im watching documented proof of how our climate is being altered by ?,,, Lets let mother nature do her job and not intervene, its selfish of us to think we can change fate. The Earth will be here and will comeback just like Chernobyl, us selfish humans think that the Earth is here to serve us, but we are just visiting her. Dont change her, she will be fine. We are just like the child molester story that was taken down, pick your poison we are all going to meet our maker, and he does not care if you have a gas, diesel, or electric car, but if you have damaged a human for the rest of thier life maybe here is where they hide justice.

I save any pyrotechnic inclinations for New Years Eve.
