Three Hells Angels With Sonoma County Chapter Sentenced to Life in Prison for Racketeering Conspiracy and Related Crimes

Department of Justice smallerPress release from Department of Justice Northern District of California:

–Jonathan Nelson, a/k/a Jon Jon; Brian Wayne Wendt; and Russell Taylor Ott, a/k/a Rusty, were all sentenced to spend the rest of their lives in prison. The sentences were handed down by the Honorable Edward M. Chen, United States District Judge after a jury concluded in June of 2022 that the defendants were guilty of murder in aid of racketeering as part of their participation in a criminal enterprise involving their membership in and association with the Sonoma County charter of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club (HASC).

“The record in this case describes a brutal brotherhood whose deeds should shock the conscience of us all,” said U.S. Attorney Ismail Ramsey. “While the life sentences cannot reverse the harm done to the defendants’ victims, it should bring some comfort to our communities to know these three defendants will never again have the ability to continue their destructive activities on our streets.”

“These three Hells Angels members were the most violent of the dozens convicted in this investigation. They used violence and fear to intimidate our community, but their brutality and disregard for human life have now earned them life in prison,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Tripp. “Today’s announcement is the direct result of years of persistence, dedication, and collaboration with our partners at the California Highway Patrol and Santa Rosa Police Department. Today, these individuals have faced the consequences of their actions, and today, we are a step closer in fulfilling our mission of eradicating organized criminal activity and keeping our neighborhoods safe.”

Nelson, 46, of Santa Rosa; Wendt, 45, of Tulare; and Ott, 70, of Santa Rosa were all members or associates of HASC. As set out in the indictment, the Hells Angels is a transnational violent outlaw motorcycle gang and the HASC is a subset of the gang whose members primarily operate in Sonoma County, Calif. On October 10, 2017, a federal grand jury indicted eleven members and associates of the HASC, charging the defendants with being part of a conspiracy whose members furthered the aims of the enterprise by engaging in a broad swath of criminal activity. The indictment described murder, narcotics distribution, assaults, robberies, extortion, illegal firearms possession, and obstruction of justice as being some of the activities in which the enterprise engaged to further its aims. The indictment also described how HASC members worked cooperatively with other Hells Angels chapters to engage in criminal activity. On September 11, 2018, a grand jury returned a superseding indictment adding a charge of murder related to the killing of HASC member Joel Silva.

The charges against Nelson, Wendt, and Ott were the subject of a nine-week trial that culminated in guilty verdicts against all three defendants. In finding all three defendants guilty, the jury concluded that each conspired to further the aims of the criminal conspiracy and that each played a role in carrying out the July 15, 2014 murder of HASC member Joel Silva. At trial, the government submitted evidence describing the role of each defendant in the murder. All three defendants concluded for various reasons that Silva should be killed. Nelson, who was then the president of HASC, arranged for Ott to take Silva to Fresno, and Silva agreed to travel there with Ott. After the two arrived at the Hell’s Angels Fresno clubhouse, Wendt, then president of the Fresno Hells Angels charter, shot Silva in the back of the head. On the morning of July 16, 2014, Silva’s body was delivered to a local crematory and was incinerated. In addition to the Silva murder, the evidence at trial included proof that HASC engaged in assaults, witness intimidation, extortion, drug trafficking, and robbery. For example, witnesses testified that HASC created a reputation for threatening anyone who goes to the police about HASC activity. In addition, testimony demonstrated that Nelson, Wendt, and other HASC members and associates threatened the lives of witnesses and their families to make clear that harm will come to anyone who cooperates with law enforcement.

In sum, the jury convicted all three defendants of participating in a racketeer influenced and corrupt organizations conspiracy, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1962(d); murder in aid of racketeering, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1959(a)(1); and conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1959(a)(5). In addition, Nelson also was convicted of assault with a dangerous weapon in aid of racketeering, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1959(a)(3), and use or possession of a firearm in relation to a crime of violence, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 924(c)(1)(A).

Five other defendants pleaded guilty to charges of RICO conspiracy and have been sentenced to terms in prison of up to 84 months. Two defendants were convicted after trial of participating in a racketeer influenced and corrupt organizations conspiracy, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1962(d); conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1959(a)(5), assault with a dangerous weapon in aid of racketeering, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1959(a)(3), and witness intimidation 18 U.S.C. § 1512(b).

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ajay K. Krishnamurthy and Kevin Barry are prosecuting the case with the assistance of Kevin Costello. The prosecution is the result of an investigation by the FBI, the Santa Rosa Police Department, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department, and the California Highway Patrol.

Agreed, especially among C.O’s, except I suspect the number of cops that accurately fit the description is dramatically less.
It’s just more of a shock when you encounter someone who has been entrusted to serve and protect the public, but has the emotional maturity level of a 2 year old.
Not so much of a shock when you encounter a 1%’er.

Just keep in mind that it used to be a large portion of the HA were military veterans . Moral injuries tbi ptsd and a lack of understanding leads to much of their problems . And as for IQ most are very bright , however their moral code is something that most of them would never break while common civilians and law enforcement break their own moral code almost everyday

Not sure what clubhouse you’re near. Back east they would not allow members to do hard drugs. My good buddy was a pledge who got washed out because he started doing hard drugs. Not saying they are exemplary citizens just a lot of people talk a lot of shit. Go talk shit directly to them and see what happens. I respect people of their word and I understand intolerance for bullshit smears…Some of their code might sound whacked to us but at least they have one they stand by…

I wonder what the average IQ of the average HA is? It would be really interesting to see their IQs plotted on a curve.

I think there should be a lot more IQ testing of different groups of people. We need a lot more data.

IQ is a fascinating topic… Sylvester Stallone has an IQ of 160, not that I’m comparing him to the HA. I’ve met some well-educated and very articulate inmates at all custody levels over the decades.

For hells sake…. I just looked up this guy Joel Silva. It turns out he was tapping the chapter president`s wife so his bros whacked him. Serves the fucker right!

This is strictly against HA rules — you DO NOT tap another members woman.

Why do we care what the Hells Angels do among themselves? If they kill one of their own, thats one less that may be a problem for any of the rest of us.

While I agree with your sentiments, unfortunate Ed’s description is dead on how the HA’s look at women. Don’t feel sorry for them since that is their choice to live the biker lifestyle. Apparently it is not problematic for the females that run with the crowd so hopefully you do not take offense to his description of them

Yes I understand that. I was just pointing out the sick and screwed up outlaw biker culture that seems so popular the last few years. In fact, this same mentality about women seems to be common in the criminal world so ladies if you are looking for a bad boy think again that mentality is what you are buying into.

Make that 70000 years, not “the last few”. Men have always treated women as property and still do. Men make the laws that currently prevent women from having dominion over our own bodies. For cryin’ out loud, you think this is RECENT?

Some women like that arrangement. Not all women. And it shouldn’t be assumed that any random woman would like it. But some women do. Sorry not sorry if that doesn’t fit into your definition of what women should be! Maybe you could just….respect their decision!

To bad that law enforcement relays on it to control through fear to demand compliance even if that compliance is in direct violation to the subjects rights knowing full well that the chances of having to be accountable are very slim with the requirements and cost involved in demanding accountability for said violations of rights. Hell there is no requirements that complaints even to the DOJ be investigated or that any action what so ever be taken other than they are required to accept the complaint as long as it is properly filed . Sort of blows everyones ideal of freedom and justice out of the water . In a day and age where law enforcement is little more than a extremely large gang that gets away with just about anything and the laws that are already passed intentionally leave way to much to personal judgement one could argue that under the law all laws should be vacated

I believe a Death Penalty sentence is what would bring some comfort to our communities to know these three defendants will never again have the ability to continue their destructive activities on our streets. It’s impossible to predict who the democrats and Newsome will release from prison in the future.

Lots of HA documentaries on YouTube. They basically run Canada and Australia and are all over Europe and other parts of the world. Yeah, there are many levels in the organization, but don’t fool yourselves. The guys at the top are obviously pretty smart and run an international cartel. Just saying. You don’t have this sophisticated of an international organization without smart people involved.

Speaking of HA documentaries, I suggest watching the newly released docu-series called “Secrets of The Hell’s Angels”. If your feeling nostalgic try “Beyond the Law” (1993).

The HA brand’s notoriety is much larger than the group it self, and the smart people involved that you mentioned are the attorneys that aid them in circumventing just laws, while turning a profit from the brand, for both themselves and the club.

As far as that dysfunctional band of miscreants “running” Canada, Australia, Europe, and other parts of the world”, with less than 10k members world wide, I can confidently say that’s an exaggeration, and they don’t run anything as significant as an entire country as you so boldly asserted.

For perspective, the notorious inner-city rival gangs known as the Bloods and Crips have an estimated combined total of 60k active members.. The more numerous, and much larger international Latin gangs have an estimated 40-50+k active members. In comparison HA makes up a small sliver of the pie, and is no more dangerous, or violent than the other 1 million active gang members that belong to one of the 30k+ national, and international gangs in the U.S. today.

Hey- if we’re talking HA films then I gotta speak up for “Hells Angels Forever”.That party scene on the boat off NYC- benefit for Sonny Barger….There’s some great footage of Jerry and Merl playing the music while the bikers and their old ladies enjoy. (Yes- that’s what the common expression is in that subculture for “girlfriends” or “wives” or “f#*k buddies” or whatever one would rather wish for them to “respectfully” call the women who ride on the back of their bikes ha ha)
