[Update: Major Injury Collision] Head-On Collision Closes Highway 101 in Del Norte County

road closed signHighway 101 is blocked near at mile marker 14.70 after a head-on collision that occurred around 9:15 a.m. on March 22.

According to the CHP Traffic Incident Information page a black pickup truck and an unknown vehicle, possibly a sedan, collided head-on.

Highway 101 is closed from Rudisill Road to the southbound Scenic Turnout. The Caltrans QuickMap estimates the road will be closed until approximately 12:15 p.m. today.

Emergency personnel are at the scene with additional units en route. Please use caution in the area.

Update 9:45 a.m.: The CHP log states that three patients are in stable condition. Two involved occupants are being transported by ambulance, one with a suspected neck injury and complaint of pain to their spine, the other for general complaint of pain.

The log has updated the vehicle description of the involved vehicles to include a Ford F-150 and a Volvo make vehicle.

Caltrans is attempting to clear the roadway and establish one-way traffic as vehicles on Highway 101 are backing up.

Update 10:58 a.m.: Caltrans crews have reopened Highway 101 according to the CHP incident log. The QuickMap shows the southbound lane moving freely while the northbound lane appears to be slowed, but moving.

Please use caution in the area.

Update: The CHP is listing this as a major injury collision.

Ugh, that is one of the “last” stretches of road I’d want to be parked on in the rain. Three hours couldn’t go by fast enough.
